Before 10:00!! Good grief. Is this normal for when the overlays go up? And it doesn't look like they're doing fastpass. Space mountain crazy too.

I think its pretty normal :-( lots of people waiting to check it out. I'd say get in line early. It will probably only get worse!

Very normal during the overlays.
There is a good chance they will not have FP for HMH. I suggest getting that out of the way early and grabbing a FP for Space.

Heck I was already going to get PP and AIW out of the way early. Is HM open during MM/Early Entry?

As others have said, yes, waits of 45 minutes throughout the day is not uncommon when the overlay goes up. I would expect it to remain lengthy (when open), throughout this weekend. It might shorten up a bit on weekdays (Mon-Thu), but long(ish) weekend lines are pretty typical.

No it is not. On your MM/EMH Day, get AIW and PP out of the way and head to NOS after official park opening.

Does HMH stay busy like that all season?

That's how I'm feeling! We were already planning the first hour for Fantasyland. We can't get everything in early!

It ebbs and flows...it'll be popular on the weekends (Fri PM through Sun), but the lines can be shorter on the weekdays, right at opening, and right at closing. I haven't seen it be "walk-on" very often, but I've been there when the lines were down to 15-20 minutes.

I was there at rope drop, but HM wasn't open. Did Pirates and by the time I got out it was running. The line now takes over all of the fountain area in addition to the usual line.

After doing HM, I did Splash, on exiting Splash I saw they were emptying the entire HM line.

And.....yes, the Dappers are out in force, but some are already looking a but warm.....

See, I was going to say no. I would expect LONGER waits. Might be the heat keeping people out of an outdoors line.

Wonder why they got rid of fastpass when it seems as though it's needed. Not a great start to the Halloween season. Both big rides down in first two hours.

I'm a little confused...you would expect the line to be longer than 40 minutes an hour after opening? Normal opening hour HM lines are pretty short (5-10 minutes on a Friday), so this is a considerable bump. So, I do think 40 minutes at 10:00 am is probably due to the overlay and Dapper Day. I could see the line getting to an hour in the mid-afternoon/evening, but probably not at opening on a Friday when a good chunk of potential guest (e.g., AP holders) are still at work/school (Saturday and Sunday, yes, but not necessarily on a Friday).

does anybody know if they do have fastpass or not for this ride? I keep getting conflicting reports online.

They have a FP queue, but they do not always use it. Last year, they did not open it at all during the time HMH was open. It was used for the Jack and Sally M&G instead.
This is the first day of the Halloween season and Dapper Day weekend...hardly considered off season.

I totally agree. There are possibly certain weeks here and there throughout the year that have lower crowds than other weeks, and they are slower than other times. I would not think that Dapper Day combined with the start of Halloween Time would be a slow day. It might not reach New Year's Eve-level crowds, but it will be a busy day.

September and October are only considered off-peak season by Disney in terms of overall attendance numbers -- meaning those months are not peak summer season, peak holiday season or random holidays (Thanksgiving or New Year's Eve) that increase crowds tremendously. That sort of thing.

For the average visitor, though, the crowds in the park today will not seem low, or like off-peak season crowds, because Halloween Time is extremely popular.

Even beyond the popularity of the Halloween Time season in general, many people go to DLR on opening day (just as they would go on opening day of the holiday season too) to see what is new, missing, changed, etc., in terms of décor, treats and merchandise. Many podcasters, bloggers, moderators and other people from various minor news outlets and Disneyland-related discussion forums go on opening day of any season or special event, specifically to report back. (I would be there today myself, doing that very thing, if it weren't so hot and miserable!:headache:)
