I haven't read the entire thread - but I wanted to respond to the OP
Kudo to you for sticking by your friend. And for sticking to your personal beliefs.
It is horrible the way the anti-abortion crowd behaves in front of clinics. I had to go to a woman's healthcare clinic a few years ago (didn't have insurance and this was the only place I could afford) for a d/c after a miscarriage. I was already not in a good mood when I got there - then had to deal with the protesters screaming at me that I was going to hell and that I was a murderer. Never being one to take being screamed at very well - I sort of exploded back - and explained the concept (rather loudly) that not every woman walking in the door of this clinic was there for an abortion and since when is having a miscarriage murder, or getting a pap smear, or a breast exam? I was just livid.
I felt so bad for this other woman in the waiting room - she was 5 months along and was there for a pre-natal checkup - they scared her so badly outside that she fainted.
This clinic provided low cost healthcare to women -women who might not otherwise have had annual checkups, papsmears, breast exams, birth control, ect. And yes they provided abortions as an option but it wasn't their sole business.
I can appreciate those that feel abortion is wrong - and I will staunchly defend their right to that opinion. But when "feeding frenzies" occur outside clinics, and doctors have their home addresses and pictures of their families posted on the internet with bloody knives, and clinics are bombed, and women's license plates are photographed in clinic parking lots and they are then harrassed at home - I think its gone way beyond people just feeling that abortion is wrong. Its terrorism by any other name.
Abortion was made legal by people working within the system, if anti-abortion folks want to change the laws then they need to also work within the system.
