If so, do you know what caused it? How long did it last?

My 3 yo DD had a virus last week (fever for 4 days, coughing out of no where, then the runny nose, and an ear infection-her first). It's a week later and she's been on Amoxicillin (which she has been on before a few times), nothing else was new..except the inhalers he gave her a week ago and he said that wasn't it. He did say it could be from the Amoxicillin or it could very well be just from having the ear infection or virus. She has these huge welts all over her (expect her feet..she's starting to get 2 on her face). :sad1:

What I am afraid of is that she will swell up on her airway will be cut off in the middle of the night. Can that happen? Dr. gave me Zyrtec and Singulair. How long can these things last? I am totally freaking out for no reason?

DS had Hives on the last day of school. They popped up after school about 3 hours before we were to leave for the beach.

I took him to the Dr. She said it could be anything. He did have a different kind of gum that I bought at a restaurant afterschool. She said it could be that but likely will never know. She gave him Zyrtec samples and a prescription for it. They were gone by morning.

He has never had them again.

DD & DH are allergic to anything with Penicillin. DD will break out all over in hives that last for several days.

Oh, your poor DD and you  . My DD hasn't had anything like that but I have. My dr told me I could take 1000mg of Ibuprofen for pain. That's 4 OTC pills. After taking 2 doses of that I broke out in hives. I think it was the dye or something. I've never had a reaction before that or since. I took benedryl for it and that really helped. It's likely she's reacting to some inactive ingredient in one of the medications.

Once I took the benedryl the welts went away within a 1/2 hour. It was pretty amazing.

I hope she's better soon.

Yes, many times..

Allergic to tomatoes..

Last time 2 weeks ago, was a penecillin for ear infection.

My dd will get hives from nerves, meds, and food and of course when she gets sick.

She had the flu a couple of weeks ago and of course has to get hives from it.

Did your doc do a flu swab? It pretty much sounds like dd's flu she had.
She also had to get an inhaler because the bronchitis that came with the flu brought up her childhood asthma.

Is she having trouble breathing?

Thankfully, no. She's coughing some and still has the runny nose (of course I don't know if it's residual virus or allergies starting to creep up).

Dr. didn't do a flu swab, but this has been the worse my DH has been sick (respritory wise). It's hit the 4 of us all differently.

I get contact dermatitis so because of that I am always careful when we try new soaps or detergents, etc. I think it had to be from the illness or the amoxicillin.

She shouldn't go into shock or anything? The Dr. also said it was ok for her to go to preschool (she missed last week and really wanted to go). She did fine, but she had dance class today and had her little leotard on and you could see her welts all over her legs and arms. I felt so sad for her. The other girls thought it was cool. I hope this goes away soon, but I don't think it will.

I'm sorry for whoever has had the hives. It's horrible..I think it's probably worse than the chicken pox.

we have them often at our house:

Causes for us:

red food coloring

rabbit fur, cat fur, horse hair

A quick shower, benadryl topical cream followed by some benedryl liquid.

Start getting better in 20-30 minutes.

Benadryl works best for hives, that is even what you are usually given in the ER if they are bad enough you have to go there. DS has gotten them from playing in the grass sometimes, we use the topical cream to help the itch fast, and give him a dose of the liquid.

I've had them more times that I can count. Some benadryl should do the trick. I'm make sure the doctor knows it happened too.

Treatment for an allergic reaction is Zyrtec OR Benadryl, not both. So your daughter's allergic reaction is being treated.

That being said, the hives have stuck around for quite a while. I'd put a call into your doc and ask about trying a dose of Benadryl versus the Zyrtec. As in, let the Zyrtec wear off, take a larger than normal (ASK THE DOC for dosage) dose of Benadryl, wait 4 hours for the Benadryl to wear off, and if no change, then return to the Zyrtec.

The allergic reaction shouldn't increase in intensity now that you've removed the allergen. So no, you shouldn't worry about her throat closing!

Now go get some sleep! ;) I never can sleep when my baby is sick. I keep waking up to make sure she's breathing. *argh*

Hope that helps! My daughter inherited peanut allergies and developed a shellfish allergy all on her own. We've been to the emergency room 3 times for uncontrollable vomiting, starting when she was 5 weeks. She's 2 now. Hubby has anaphalysis shock (throat closes) for milk, peanuts, sulfur... Basically, he's allergic to everything, including air.... *wry grin* They have matching Epi Pens that we've never had to use, thankfully!

I get nervous with hives but the only time I've had them was a pretty severe allergy reaction; both times I went to the ER - they were fast onset and spreading due to bug bites. My 15yo DD had them one day and I did take her to the ER mainly because they were spreading fairly rapidly. They gave her some IV medications and it took them away in just minutes.

I'd be careful with benadry mainly because of her age, if the dr didn't suggest it that might be why. Has the Dr seen her? Is she still taking the Amoxicillin? My youngest DD is allergic to it; she would break out and it got worse after each dose. This was when she was a baby but we've never attempted again. Allergies can develop so that she has had it before really doesn't matter.

:worried: I am quite a worrier. My mom was once given an antibiotic (penicillin, augmentin or one of those) and Dad had to rush her to the ER because her tongue was swollen, her eyes were barely open and her throat was tight.....freightening :scared1: wouldn't want that to happen. I do feel better. Poor thing keeps rubbing herself. I'm like..Honey, don't scratch and she says I'm not, I'm feeling it.

I didn't realize so many people had bad allergies. It must be really awful to have reactions like that and often.

My DD gets them all the time. Shes 5 and has since about age 3. Every time she's got a virus, and who knows, maybe other times. She's not allergic to anything (we had her tested). Drs said its just how she reacts. Stick with the Zyrtec...those really have helped her. The hives last anywhere from 2 days to a week. They normally start on her tummy, then spread...sometimes when really bad they get to her face as well. Hope your child feels better soon!

I didn't give her any Amoxicillin today once I saw the welts. I did tell the Dr. we have Children's Benedryl at home (DH has allergies as does my 11 yo DD) but I guess he didn't want me to use it. True allergies can develop...I moved here from PA in 1992 (I was 19). I never had allergies until 2000. I kept gettign sick in the fall and spring and kept getting bronchitis, after numerous Dr. visits I made an appt. with an allergist and testing. Voila! Allergic to dust mites, cat, tree pollens-just built a brand new home in the woods-and molds and mildews and asthma. My Dh's side of the family is real bad with allergies. Is there a safe state to live for allergy suffers?

She's starting 1-2 on her face.

Thanks everyone!! I feel better. Sometimes I just worry myself sick too much. I think it's the lack of control.

BTW, I'm coming to this board to hang out more often..you guys/gals are quick!

My son got hives when he was 7 months old. That's when we found out he was allergic to Sulfa which is in some antibiotics. I felt so bad because he was suffering so bad from a horrible ear infection and then he got hives from the one thing that was supposed to help him.

When my ds was about 18mos, he was on Amox. and he got hives. Big patches of red, that were raised up like welts. They quickly covered his entire body. He wasn't bothered by them, not itchy or uncomfortable, but he looked awful. We called him Mr. Dots. I have a pic, but it's not on the computer.
