Has tipping gone too far? Check this out.

I'm going to play devil's advocate here: could they have been joking around? Making fun of everyone wanting a tip?

But I'm with you: I wouldn't have ordered from the website. And I don't tip at Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts, but when I'm a restaurant I tip at least 15%.

Dang.. I should make one of those pop up on the DIS...enjoying our boards? Tip the webmasters!

Hey, don't forget us moderators, Alex. :teeth: :smooth:

I have to agree with Alex's first comment. I would have written an e-mail to the company with a tip to get rid of that option and build the added cost into the shipping charges if they must, but they had lost my business and will undoubtedly lose more.

I haven't seen the website in question, but if it was a joke it sounds like it was poorly executed.

I wonder if you get used socks if you don't tip. :rotfl2:

The idea of tipping when you're paying shipping is crazy!

this has me thinking...what about ordering take out? Do you tip them as well? I haven't been - I didn't think it was a tipped position.

In many chain restaurants it is. They are paid like a waiter/waitress and work for tips.

Hmmm, you all have given me an idea!

I am going to tie a cup around my neck. Then, when I hold doors open, "bless" someone after they sneeze, or otherwise show people politeness, they can tip me for my outstanding service!

Brilliant!

I don't tip at Dunkin Donuts for coffee since i discovered that they make way more that minimum wage ( at least at the one near me ) and I also don't tip at the local coffee shop same reason as above, They are not working for the same hourly wage that waitresses are.

I worked at Dunkin' and we made minimum wage and the owners were jerks who had everyone working crazy hours. We all appreciated the tips. Most of the people who tippped were ones we knew well and would have their coffee ready before they even made it in th door.

Honestly, here I am just buying my new SIL some biking socks online for her Christmakuh stocking, and I'm already to check out and pay up when I see this:

"Tips for the Shipping Crew (The Shipping Crew Pick, Pack & Ship Orders) Tip Amt $5.00 Tip $3.00 Tip $1.00 Tip
Monica, one of the Shipping Crew (they're all Working Moms) suggested a tip cup on the Counter (or in this case the website). The owners said sure because THEY DO all the hard work...
If a Customer wants to tip Great!
[A few people do not understand the tip cup and call to complain but please if you don't want to tip THAT'S FINE. The tip cup is for the people who know what it's like to work hard and raise a family. It makes the shipping girls VERY HAPPY and IT HELPS THEM!]"

Now, I thought, since when are the shipping crew at on online agency a tipped position? I thought, would I get better biking socks if I tipped? But is it right to tip shippers? I mean, the website says I don't have to? But for real.... tip the shippers?

Don't get me wrong, we are generous tippers to those who we expect to tip -- mousekeeping, waitresses, bellhops. But shippers for an online agency? I appreciate that they're working moms, but DH and I work hard too to pay wicked high property taxes in NJ, and we don't have a tip cup out for our job.

What do you think? Am I the only one taken a little aback by this? Or, really, should we just tip everyone these days?
Hahaha...let me guess...you're referring to longscycle.com, right? I've bought some premium cycling socks from them in the past because their price is so good but I'll skip through the tips portion. This was a popular topic on some of the cycling boards and the consensus was that it's tacky. I consider myself fair when it comes to tipping but this is where I draw the line...

That is tacky. I will tip a waiter/waitress because they don't even make minimum wage. They make like $3.25/hour. I tip a bellhop because they are making my life easier and also because they don't usually ask for a tip. I would also be weirded out by this website.

Yes! That's the one! Sorry I don't frequent the cycling boards as DB and DSIL are the cyclists and I was just buying for them, but I can understand why it would be such a hot topic over there. Tell me, did you get good socks despite not tipping?!

The ones I go to in Boston collect for Children's Hospital. I'll toss change in if they are collecting for a charity, but that's it.

They were good but not great. Let me explain...

What I bought were some plain white DeFeet cycling socks. These normally retail for $10/pair but I got them for like $3/pair+shipping. After receiving them, you can tell that the quality is more like an irregular. They didn't come with the packaging that normal DeFeet socks come, mismatched color stitching on each sock, and they didn't fit like a first quality pair of socks. But, I knew this going into it and I'm ok with it. First timers buying from them may think otherwise so just beware.

Would I buy from them again? Probably. Let me know if I can help you with anything else...
