Has this cold and miserable winter encouraged anyone to move to Florida

Yesterday, we got 9 inches of snow. I really think it is nature's way of telling me I've made the right decision. I will be moving to Orlando in June!

This has been a long, tough winter here. 22 consecutive days of snowfall, a one day break and then more days of snow.

This sis the first year that my DW and I have seriously considered moving south. I think that we will, once the kids are all out on their own. I'm liking winter less and less every year!

We're moving to Orlando soon -- I hope!!! It's not only this winter (but those of previous years) that have made me yearn for warmer temps. year-round. I've finally convinced DH that we should make the move and our DDs have sided with me all along. We're just waiting for my boss of 16 years to retire (which he's promised to do no later than December, 2004) so we can get there. As others have said, we have pretty hot and humid summers in Chicago so we'll take the trade-off of big bugs (and alligators) vs. drab and dreary cold winters.

We have been seriously considering a move. The cold of this year along with the snoww of the past years has worn me out. We won't be able to do it for another year or 2 but it is my plan eventually!

YES!!!!!!!! We are soooo over the whole cold/snow thing! We are building in FL as we speak, so this is our last winter of this nonsense! ::yes:: ::yes::

Nope!
This winter has been a lot better than last year. I love living in the Northeast. I tried living in FL but I missed the people and the seasons too much.

Funny this topic has come up today. DH and I were just talking about moving to FL this afternoon. I'm in the military, I have one year left on my contract, at first I was thinking of doing the entire twenty years of service but have since decided that Uncle Sam has taken up enough of my time. Don't get me wrong I love the military but I think my season being in the Air Force is coming to an end. I want to devote more time to my family. Anyway we were talking about moving from MD (washington DC metro area) and buying our first house in FL instead of this area. From a weather aspect the past couple of winters including this one is making the decision to move a lot easier. Plus my children would love the warmer weather!!!!

YES!!!

I do not like the ice. I can take a foot of snow..but I dont do ice! The Mid Atlantic this year didn't get all the snow of past years...but we are getting the ice. So yes, as we speak DH is looking for a job in Atlanta. Still get the change in seasons..b ut a much longer spring and summer and a much shorter and gentler winter! And still a big city with all 4 major sports teams!LOL!

I am one job offer short of a move to Florida:earsboy:

When we started looking for a new job, we knew we didn't want to stay in Michigan so we started looking in warmer areas, Texas, Florida, Arizona. We just got lucky enough to find a job in Orlando. We really hated cold weather. As far as the summer heat...I would rather have to go outside and deal with the summer heat then have to go outside during the Michigan winters and deal with snow and cold. I do not miss shoveling snow or clearing off my windows at all. We've been here for almost a year and a half and i've only seen a few snakes and as far as the palmetto bugs (looks like giant cockroaches) we get sprayed every few months so we don't see to many. You get used to the lizards after a while, they are really more scared of people. I do miss the seasons but living so close to Disney, DCL, Sea World, Universal and Busch Gardens, i'll give up the seasons.

This morning, as the Van I was "driving" was sliding sideways down the natural ice rink that I used to call my driveway, I thought, hey wouldn't it be nice to live somewhere that is warm all year round. But then, after I executed a quite stunning double axle onto the street, I thought, what would be the challenge in that.

I thought this was the "BEST" post I read above. We agree 100% with it. As you can see in tag under my name, we will be moving to Florida in 3-4 years when we retire. We will be 51 + 52 then so we hope to enjoy many years of sunshine.

My sister just moved from Pittsburgh to West Palm Beach 2 months ago and loves it. We are leaning towards Orlando,Vero Beach, or Melbourne area.

Anyone who says they like winter are kidding themselves. Which one of these are your favorite things to do in the winter.......

1.Scraping windows
2.Shoveling snow
3.avoiding potholes
4.taking a chance of losing control(car) on ice
5.filthy cars
6.taking 30 minutes to get somwhere 10 minutes away
7.overcast and dreary days for 5 months
8.wearing coats

and sweaters for 5 months
9.never being able to go for a walk outside for 5 months

Why not?

My kids and grandchildren are here.

And, I could not take the summers.

No one brought up the real minus about Florida: The people!

While there are some wonderful people in Florida there are also alot of:

People running away from their problems (I have never seen so many drifters and losers anyplace like Florida!)

Poor Schools

Poor Government

Lots of crime and general social problems. The crime rates in Miami, Orlando, JAX and Tampa is very high.

Jeb Bush

Low wages, poor job market unless you like working in a grocery store, restaurant or motel.

Terrible zoning. Miles and miles of fast food, gas stations and Taco Bells.

Crackers and Red Necks

I could go on and on!

:Pinkbounc

At least our son will be here in a few years, he's in HS and is planning to go to College in FL, he loves the sunshine, the people, and being outside all the time!

So do we!!!

If any Disney area's had work for my hubby we'd move tomarro!!!!

The weather is so nice, the people are so polite, always smiling
(I am from NE and born here)---
We would love to buy and live down in Orlando from September-May! I don't think I could take the humidity in the Summer-
Summer's in NE are humid enough!

I wouldn't mind being called a snow bird!!!!

Every place has it's ups/downs,
but there are NO winters (with snow) in FL

We already told our son, we'll be visiting alot!!!!

What State doesn't have school/government/city/town/
problems?

Let's say how hard would it be??
Would you like to live the winter in 81 degree days or 15-20 degree or less days?!!!
HHHHHHHHHHHMMMMMM???!!!LOL!

I told my DH, I ll even try Golf!!!

I'm in Florida and am looking to get OUT! :teeth: Winters are great, but the summers I can do without. I'm heading further north. :teeth:

What are you people smoking? No seasons in Florida? I have my heater on right now!

I have obviously already been convinced to move here. BUT, the last cold front convinced me not to go to New Orleans for Mardi Gras this year. I always wind up being wet, cold, and miserable! Watch them have nice weather this year just because I don't go. If I never see weather below 50 degrees for the rest of my life, I'll be happy.

I felt paralyzed in the winter, and the farthest north I have lived was Shreveport, LA! I am getting much more out of my life here. It's like I get an extra 4-5 months a year where I am not held back from living due to the cold. The summers -- they were much worse where I used to live; it's not nearly as humid here.

I've actually looked at houses online in the Hunters Creek area--it's comparable to where we live now, and I have school age kids. This winter has really stunk and it's really the first time I have seriously considered it.
If we don't move before then (I have 17 years invested in the Ohio retirement system and need to work 13-17 more before I retire) we will go down at retirment. DH works in home remodeling--windows, siding, roofing--and he can work anywhere, he can sell ice to eskimos.
The only way I would move sooner would be if I go back to school and get a principal's certificate and get a job offer near the Orlando area. I'm getting a little burned out in the classroom, but I'd rather be burned out where I know everybody and know the system than in a brand new place.
Also, God bless them, my parents are still kicking up their heels at almost 72 and 74, 5 minutes away from me. They've lived in the same house for 46 years and aren't going anywhere. My sister is an hour away so I'm the emergency person, power of attorney if needed, etc.
