Has the biggest loser gone too far?

I don't blame TBL for this. I believe Rachel got greedy and went through dangerous extremes to get that thin. She was thinking of the money. Some example she is to America.

I think having a slightly underweight BMI is fine. I think as a society we are so used to fat people looking 'average' that a thin person looks 'emaciated'. When my BMI is in the average range I have belly fat and thigh fat. Glad I am a pear-fat storage person (compare to an apple-fat storage) but I prefer not to have extra stored fat on my body.

I am 5'3" and for most of my life weighed between 97 and 109 lbs. Now that menopause is coming, my metabolism is slowing down and the belly fat bugs me. But at age 24, being 5'4" and weighing 109 lbs is not a big deal. She'd probably 'look' better to some people at around 112 lbs, (3lbs for every inch above 5', plus 100) but if her BMI is a little under 'normal', what does that make the people who are a little bit 'over'? Shouldn't we be horrified about them too?

BTW - every other person I've seen on that show still looks fat to me at the end.

Schmeck,

I had not watched the finale when I saw this thread and I did think "I wonder if it's just a case of society doesn't know what a normal/lean body type looks like anymore?". I really judged ahead of time. And thought the winner is probably just a little thin, who cares.

AND -

I truly believe some people look very healthy lean/thin - and look good small because that's their body type and they are meant to be that way, no wonder what the ridiculous BMI says. :thumbsup2 Many.

So I understand your point about yourself. You know where you look and feel your best.

But she's not one of them, in my opinion. Because it really goes against her body type. She looks horrid. She's a young woman who looks like she's late thirties. No amount of dehydration could cause a girl that young to have deep lines down her face, in my opinion.

All the contestants were so excited to see her, you could tell. And the ones that they had on camera seemed horrified by her look. So obviously it was something in person.

And this was a tell tale sign for me - she laughed at her prior self in a weird manner and kissed goodbye and waved. I know most people think that that is normal and just a way to say goodbye to old ways/bad habits/bad health. I don't.

Hopefully, she'll put some pounds back on.

And be fine and was just being overly competitive because that nature was apparent all season. It's not the show's fault, it's in her.

And I thought Lumi looked fantastic and not too thin at all. To me, her home win was something. I thought she was voted off too early, she was one of those weeks where they did get to decide.

I agree. She was very competitive all the way through the season. She was also up against two big guys in the finale.

OT - the only reason I've come back to watching the BL, after many years away, is because of Dolvett. :flower3:

The man has the face of an angel. :goodvibes

I left the season Bob had a hissy fit on camera when a contestant lost such an embarrassing amount of weight - 2 lbs. :sad2: (insert sarcasm). He was yelling about how we're not here for trips, we're here for weight loss. And I thought, holy irrational your contestant just lost weight Bob and experienced what normal people do in life! How is that not a good thing?

Yes. I get it. But here's the thing, that's the same part of her that could easily go into an eating/weight/overexercising disorder.

Let's hope not. :thumbsup2

I will never understand how it is ok to bash someone who looks maybe 10 pounds underweight but not anyone who is obese or morbidly obese.

Not that I think anyone should bash overweight people but it's just so acceptable here if you are underweight. Everyone starts worrying about an underweight persons health. Too ironic considering the obesity problem.

Double standard.

Also, I watched the show once and that was enough. Jillian dumped a bucket of water on a contestants head. I would have killed Jillian had that been me.

If she GAINED 100 pounds people would be "bashing" her too...why? Because it's unhealthy.

She lost 155 pounds, probably about 20 pounds too much and even experts were concerned. The same experts that make they work to get it off.

It's not a double standard. I think most people are just concerned about her health and the message it sends. It's never that simple.

I am 5'4" and when I got married I weighed 97 lbs. I was thin but not underweight. 105 is not underweight.

I would love to be 105 again.

Well, it's not okay because some of us were not bashing. :thumbsup2

(And I have a friend who used to be very thin who complained about the same thing. So you're not alone. Also, this summer one of our friends lost some weight and she was always thin so it really stood out and people openly commented upon her arrival and I did think whoa no one does that if one of us gains. People just might comment quietly to someone else. ;))

And here I imagined you were like Jillian, LSmith. :rotfl2: Insert wink.

I don't know who I would choose between the three of them. I would say Dolvett but I don't know how I would concentrate.

.

I absolutely agree with you. She definitely looks completely different from her fat self. I don't think she looks bad just really really different. I have a friend who went Vegan and has this same build now and I can tell you she is extremely healthy . It is amazing what switching from an animal based diet to a plant based diet can do for you over all health and your weight loss goals which is what I heard the BL contestant did to lose the drastic amount that she did. Good for her I wish I had her will power and drive!

I know that but you said it was unsustainable.

OK, I guess I should have been less precise and said for many people, it's unsustainable. From every weight loss / diet / healthy eating book I've read, they all say the key to long-term success, for most people, is a "slow and steady" approach. You don't say "I'm going to lose 10 lbs in 3 days." CAN you do it? Sure, but can you live the lifestyle long-term that allows that kind of weight loss to happen? Most people can't, and that's why "diets" by-in-large don't work. I can't recall the stat, but it's something like 80% or more people gain all if not more of the weight back, after a highly restrictive diet. I could go on, but read Intuitive Eating; it illustrates what I'm talking about.

I'm 5'5, and 115 pounds, so ten pounds heavier than the woman, but an inch taller. I'm not underweight in the least. I eat healthy, work out, and indulge when I want. 115 is a natural weight for me. I think the woman looks amazing, and not gaunt at all.

I think numbers mean very little. Overweight/underweight/BMI. Meaningless.

It's how the individual looks that matters. 105 on another 5'4 person might be very different. On HER it looks sickly. I'm 5'7 and 180 and far from fat.

:thumbsup2 It's so subjective. I bet that if you found 10 people who weighed the same amount, and were the same height, you would have 10 people who looked different from each other.

She was a powerhouse on the show. Totally dedicated and never lost sight of her goal. She really was incredible with her drive. :thumbsup2

But if going vegan or doing this for the BL win is going to make a young woman look more than 10 years older than she is (in my opinion, some think she looks great) - no thank you. Maybe's that's vain, oh well. :goodvibes

But then again I know that it doesn't with veganism alone. ;) I have friends that are vegan and vegetarian and they all look healthy and beautiful.

Well, I'm 5'6 and 115 and far from sickly looking. I work out one hour a day, 6 days a week but I have had overweight people comment telling me that I'm "too skinny". In fact, I still have a bit of fat I would love to get rid of.

Overweight/underweight are INDIVIDUAL things. One needs only to look at her photos from high school (where she was an excellent swimmer and in GREAT shape) to see that the weight she is NOW is an unhealthy one for her. She is underweight for HER body type.

I think, unfortunately, that some people take images we see in fashion magazines as "the ideal." It is NOT. Fashion models are notoriously underweight. Very underweight.

Rachel, in high school, looked great. Healthy. Strong and beautiful. The images from last night were very disturbing.

And, while it is certainly none of my business, one good indicator of health for women is whether you are having regular menstrual cycles (assuming you are not old enough for menopause). If she is not, she is NOT healthy.
