Has anyone with motion sickness attempted Guardians while taking meds (dramamine, bonine, etc.?)

I am amazed how many people can take these medications. Not me. I won’t be going on it. Plenty of other things to enjoy.

The minuscule chance of a side effect stopped me from trying Bonine for a long time and that was one of the worst medical decisions of my life. Now that I take it I no longer have to be that person that can’t do X, Y, Z. I no longer have to throw up for hour after hour on planes.

I’m not sure what the half-life is of meclazine but I’ve never taken it that far ahead of an expected queasy event (The night before). I take it about an hour before I think I’ll need it. At WDW I just take it before I leave the hotel and I’m good for the day.

I rode GotG and was glad I’d taken meclazine. I was slightly queasy for a few minutes after and didn’t want to ride it again that day but I’m glad I did it. It’s a great ride. A bit more than BTM but nowhere near Mission Space.

You're doing much better in looking for ways to prepare than I did.

I don't read or watch ride spoilers, and this wound up being a big mistake for me with Guardians. I don't usually get motion sick on rides and can do coasters at WDW and US with no issues and do screen rides like FoP, star tours, and Remy's, with the only exception of Forbidden Journey, which really gets me sick. I assumed this was going to be more like a typical roller coaster and I was wrong. I can't ride anything that spins and I didn't realize just how much spinning goes on in GotG. Not consistent circles, but just enough of a spin, and VERY quickly, to set off motion sickness for me. I had to close my eyes a lot to get my bearings or I was going to get sick.

I read an opinion somewhere that the ride vehicles are similar in how they move to Escape From Gringotts, which is one of my favorite rides, but even though the concept is similar with a "coaster" that spins in different directions with lots of screens, I don't feel like GotG is that comparable to Gringotts. More like teacups, in the dark, as fast as RnRC, but super smooth.

I would love to ride it again, but honestly I'm a little apprehensive. I have been looking at ways to try to manage the ride better the next time we go.

I have motion sickness issues but I prepared as I usually do for similar rides-- Less Drowsy Dramamine-N that morning -- and I was good to go. Could I have ridden GoG twice in a row? Probably not but I am so happy that I had the chance to ride it this trip. Such a great ride!

I don’t understand, aren’t you missing out if you don’t look at the screens? Why ride it if you are looking down the whole time at the track?
I ask because I want to ride it, I get nauseous on rides as well, but I don’t understand how you can get the full effect out of the ride if you are looking down at the track and not the show/screens in front of you? It will be our first time to ride in December, so I am taking in all these suggestions not to get sick.

The screens are environmental. You are not meant to watch them. You are meant to observe them. There are no 3D glasses.

This is completely different than the attractions they have built over the last 10 plus years that are nothing but us watching screens which is why so many people want to look at them. They are meant to ENHANCE in this case and not actually be stared at.

My Spouse who never gets sick on rides, did the first time we rode GotG. We had to sit on a bench for 15 min because he was sick to his stomach. Next time he looked at but didn't watch the screens and was totally fine.

If you have ever ridden the Mummy at Universal, they have pictures as you go through the faster part of the ride that illuminate when you go by them and flash to display the picture and then turn off. Think of it as the same kind of idea only now the picture/flashing light has been replaced with an actual screen to create a richer environment.

I cannot do spinning. Drops OK, banks OK, spinning very not-OK. I had nearly an entire day lost at WDW when I rode MS. I was dizzy for hours. That was back in the day when there was just the Orange side. I didn't notice it when I was on the ride--everything felt fine--but when I got off, I could barely stand up.

So I am skipping GotG, as much as I'd love to try it.

Some screens include characters talking and others are showing parts of the ride story of escaping.

No Need to Apologize!

On the attraction, it is very clear the screens that you are supposed to watch as the vehicle will stop to let you watch the storyline of the ride and listen to the characters.

When your vehicle is moving you want to Observe the screens (So look at for a brief second, similar to you would a road sign when driving). You don't Fix your sight on that object, you observe it and continue on. The easiest way to think of this is not to truly focus on the screen. Parks have literally trained us over the last 10 plus years that the ride is the screen. Unlearning that can be challenging.

In order to do this, I sit in the front row and move with the track and with the movements of the vehicle to truly focus on the ride itself while stealing quick glances at the screens as they Wizz by without having to focus on them.

One of my favorite things about guardians is that the pre show carries so much of the story line so you can really and truly just enjoy the ride without having to over analyze what's happening. You can just enjoy the roller coaster.

The ride does turn you to certain scenes to watch, kind of the same way as Haunted Mansion and Spaceship Earth turn the ride vehicle. The difference is it’s fast and the scene you are turned towards might be moving the opposite direction to you (makes it look much faster). Some might not consider them to be story, but I did,
The part that almost did me in was a sharp banked turn around a central item
The only time it actually stops for guests to view a scene is almost at the end where the Guardians Team thanks riders for saving the Galaxy

I would also suggest watching ride reaction videos too, to see what others are saying when they get off it. Not the Disney edited videos which only show the laughing and excitement, but the ones by reporters or vloggers actually riding. I find the ones where the cameras are directly on the rider's faces interesting, in seeing their reactions. It's also interesting that those videos show how the cars behind move on the track, to get a better idea of how the individual cars of this ride move overall. It really shows the omni-mover feature of the cars.

You did do the link correctly - that was a good video.

The guests shown in the Disney videos can be very misleading - they knew what they were in for and wouldn’t be in the video if they weren’t smiling and happy.

It is interesting to see the cars behind - how much they move and how quickly the OminI feature is turning them. It’s smooth, but fast and many changes of direction

You can see how steeply some of the track is banked and see the ‘hill’ in front of their car. Unlike other roller coasters, this one doesn’t seem like it slows (at least not much) when climbing. The slower climb on other coasters is where many people get their bearings and get their breath

Spoiler alert! Don't read if you don't want to know.....

I saw somewhere that some of the screens are the size of a football field, and you can really see how big that one screen is with the lights on. That steep banked section is crazy! You don't even realize what's happening while you're on the ride, and I can't remember any slowing for hills, etc. Heck, I can't even remember when we spun backwards (not the launch part) other than hearing Peter Quill saying "Rocket, anytime!" and spinning forward again. It's just so disorienting.
The low light POV videos are good, but they don't show just how dark it actually is on the ride. I get that they're trying to show more details by using the low light feature, but I can honestly say I never once saw the track or some of the things picked up on the low light videos. lol!

All that said, I really do hope I can find a solution to ride again without the sickness.

Just by watching the cars behind him, unfortunately, it's not for me.
