Dont get me wrong I still adore this product and I am getting tons of value, but I just did my cash rate w/ applicable discount to points conversion for my upcoming trips. Wow the 1bed are so much lower. I knew this already but still shocked anytime I calculate.

BLT 2 bed preferred. My value per point $44.91
VDH Studio preferred. My value per point $34.46
BWV 1 bed resort view. My value per point $26.04
RIV 1 bed resort view. My value per point $24.12
AUL 1 bed island view. My value per point $35.77 (this one has no discounts applied yet since they are not released)

I ask because I did something similar for my most recent studio stay vs. an upcoming 1BR. Normalizing the studio to be $1/pt, the 1BR came in at a perfectly acceptable 89 cents. Those were based on rack comparisons, but if the discount is the same at both, the ratio of .89/1 should be too.

What discount factor do you use?
I used the best available discount for those dates. I try to go to the Disney website and use the booking tool first to see if the room is available and use that total they provide with discount. When that is not available I use the price tools on various websites and then subtract the discount being offered (harder this way)

Most of these stays the discount was at 25%.

Interesting. Amusingly enough, the studio stay I had was entirely within the maybe 20 days total that entire year where Disney offered nary a discount to anyone. Lucky for me I guess!

idk I think the best deal (or at least easiest to compare) is the studio, which typically is far and away an amazing deal with DVC

I was only taking time to compare my upcoming trips I have on the books. I am sure studios probably are an amazing value.

Is this like saying that a Civic is a much better dollar value than a BMW 5 series?
I don’t think that’s an analogous point. I understand there are people who like 1br and think it’s worth the points. However I believe the point of the post is the cash to point ratio for 1br is worse then for studio or 2br. This sorta points to idea that on open market the value of 1br is closer to 1.5x studio where in dvc system points its roughly 2x cost for 1br. This is also evident in booking patterns in how quickly studios go vs 1br.

Yes. Pointing out how disparaging the point charts are for 1 beds compared all other room categories. We all already knew this but I get reminded when I do my calculations.

Pssst…. the point of my post was just to be silly….

Love the calculations.

Now you have me running my own calculations with my planned RIV stay this summer for 8 nights in 1 BR resort view. Interestingly, none of the discounts appear to be available for stays over 7 nights. If I shorten it to 7-nights, I could book 7-nights in either a 1 BR Preferred View or a Studio Preferred View, but no resort view rooms are available (and 2 BRs are not available in either view category).

1 BR, Preferred View - Rack Rate
40% AP Discount - $5,329
30% Discount - $6,217
Points cost - 356
Points Value 40% - $14.97
Points Value 30% - $17.46

Studio, Preferred View - Rack Rate
40% AP Discount - $3,860
30% Discount - $4,503
Points cost - 157
Points Value 40% - $24.59
Points Value 30% - $28.68

Of course, a resort view for both of those categories will cost you less points - 276 for the 1 BR and 125 for the Studio. And, I probably wouldn't have an AP if I was not already a DVC member (and if I did, it would have to be the more expensive Incredipass). So, if I take those 30% discount rates above and apply them to the points required for resort view rooms, then I get points value of $22.53 for 1 BR and $36.02 for the Studio.

So many different ways to analyze this. But, without a doubt, you don't get anywhere near as much value from using points for 1 BRs. Still, I'm not staying in a studio, especially for 8 nights! LOL. I'm sure I'll get to a 2 BR sooner rather than later, though.
