Has anyone with a long drive (20 hrs or so) driven solo to WDW?

Donald... if you do drive it please let us know how it works out. I'm in MA and would have a similar drive and up until now balked at the idea of getting into the car for anything longer than a 3 hour trek. I have decided that the next time I head to FL over the holidays I will drive it. (My issue has been although I'll have a teen & a preteen in the car with me, they'll plug in their ipods and drift off into their own worlds leaving me alone. :p both a blessing and a curse)

As a kid I camped iwth my family all over the US... NC/SC go on forever. I vividly recall the groves in the pavement putting me to sleep (thu-thunk...thu-thunk...thu-thunk) Can't do that when I'm driving... LOL

Just for kicks I mapped out the drive, stopping just before DC, SC and then arriving in FL. The trip home would be the worst without anything to look forward to. Maybe a 1 way rental and fly home.

I don't think that I will be driving until at least next year. Jet Blue released their flights into January yesterday and I was able to get about $100 each way. For just me, I can't justify driving when I am able to book airfare for less than $250.

When I do drive, I will probably pick spots similar to you to stop. I was thinking about stopping in DC and then maybe in the Savanna area.

Maybe I can try it next summer (Aug '10) when I take my nephew. Of course, he won't be much company in the car since he will be playing video games the entire time. :rotfl:

Thank you! I just snagged 3 seats out of Boston for Dec 3-7th. B-day treat for myself LOL ... so happy.

I knew some guys from Toronto who used to drive it all the time. They said it took about 24 hours (which is about right) and they just split it up into a couple days. Its really not that bad and, frankly, I prefer driving to flying any day of the week. I like having my car with me and I hate relying on others, particularly airlines...dealing with security...limited in how many souvenirs I can bring back...parking fees at the airport, etc. Plus, its nice to just drive somewhere if I want, such as Jellyrolls or even out to Citywalk.

Excellent ponts! Lately all my vacations have been by air. Then last year, I drove up to Acadia National Park in Maine for a few days and it was so nice just being able to throw all my stuff in the car, not worry about security or how much my bags weighed and have a cooler so that I could have water and soda with me.

Oh I just love playing my music, being able to pull off if I see something interesting...etc. I always stop at the welcome centers to load up on info, plus the free orange juice at the Florida welcome center. I also like to stop at the World Golf Center in St. Augustine to eat lunch at Caddyshack and browse the pro shop. Plus, Zenos Taffy in Daytona Beach is the best taffy I've ever had (they've won several awards as well).

And if I flew, I couldn't do any of those things!!! :thumbsup2
