Has anyone vacationed in Key West?

GothTink & bas71873
DH & I rented a cottage and spent two weeks in Key West last March, best vacation of our lives !! When I get home this afternoon I'll post and tell you my favorites, after I look at my pics and refresh my memory.

We went on a cruise last summer and stopped at Key West for the day. DH and I fell in love with the place....its right up our alley.

Every Easter break we head to S. Florida to visit my snowbird parents. We leave the kids with my parents for a few nights and DH and I usually go to South Beach.....this year we are headed to Key West

Can't wait! We did the trolley thing last summer so we kinda got a lay of the land - very informattive too.

OP - thanks for starting this thread. :goodvibes

We are heading down before Disney in August. Anyone stay at the Marriott Courtyard? We are using points to stay with our two little ones. Thanks!

We went in 1999 on our Honeymoon, so that's 11 years ago and things may have changed some. I wouldn't stay there for a week, in fact we left after 5 days and drove back up to visit relatives in Fort Pierce.

Pro's:

Hotel- The Marriott on the East side of the town, pretty oceanfront room

Lighthouse - fun, we even saw a bunch of nude men sunbathing at a hotel near the lighthouse and DH and I got a laugh out of that

Sunset - was fun, party like atmosphere

Snorkeling - took a boat out into the ocean to the reef - I loved it while DH got seasick, so maybe that's a pro for me and a con for him.

Hemmingway House - loved the 6 toed cats.

Con's:

Beach - almost non-existant

Food - You'd better like seafood a lot or else there isn't much else.

Also, after a few days you get sort of sick of the partying and stuff, since there's not a whole bunch else to do in that area.

Well ! I just wrote the longest post ever, and of course by the time I finished it had timed out and didn't post. You can tell i don't write trip reports or I would have known to type it into a document then copy and paste. Soooooo
Tomorrow I'll do that don't have enough time left now.
I have tons of info for you, Promise!

OMG, so many great links! And we LOVE haunted tours - thanks so much! It sounds like Duval is the place to be...

We had a blast when we did the haunted tour. There is this really creepy doll you have to see, I think that's the Robert one mentioned above. We usually fly into Fort Lauderdale, rent a car, drive down (beautiful drive) and then come back a couple days early and stay in Fort Lauderdale for a couple days (FIL lives there). That is where we're hoping to do our next trip, have fun! Love Key West.:yay:

Enjoy your trip to the Keys. I disagree with your reasoning (you are still celebrating)--but you go for it.

I will issue my protest of Mango's restaurant. Do not go there for ANY reason.

My brother and his partner had their commitment ceremony last year. They were bumped from the Hemingway house for a heterosexual couple (they did not wish to fight for their valid contract).

At Mango's they were treated so poorly. Food was not served for the first hour of the reception (contrary to the contract), the bartender overmade the drinks causing my mother's bar tab to be reached within the first hour (lots of witnesses including myself who saw the bartender not measuring shots and being generous thus running through bottles like crazy), When the buffet was served it was poorly set up, the potatoes were completely RAW and someone found a chunk of sharp metal in their salad.

Coincidentally, the Restaurant was busy with an off-site wedding and sent all their best staff to work that. It was the heterosexual wedding at the Hemingway House.

What that restauarant did was very wrong and I will urge anyone to not patronize the establishment. You would think in a city such as Key West, this would not have happened, but we very much believe that it happened that way for one reason only.

The drag shows are great. They did the one at Aqua and the show is phenomenal (though exceeds my blushing threshhold b/c of tons of innuendo and expletives throughout. I naively didn't expect THAT much.) Some of the other ones are not as good. Be aware--the drag queens, really include the very hot men in the show. Admittedly all of us ladies were drooling over this one guy--and were quite pleased that the drag queens enjoyed him so much.:lmao:

Outside of anything else--I only go with my kids, so my trips are geared towards that.

Fogarty's is a restaurant that my mom (a local) recommends.

I don't really have any other suggestions.

I agree that this is not a place you go to for the beach. You go for other reasons. There is one beach you can swim on. The sand is lovely. But you cannot go in teh water without protective footwear.

The bars were fun. Though Garden of Eden....:scared1: The top floor allows...you to go nekkid. But it seems the only folks who are nekkid--tend to be the ones who should not be.:rotfl:

Key West is not my favorite place--I'm really not that kind of girl. But those are the highlights from what my (adult) family members took me to b/c they find it enjoyable.

My kids enjoy the fun things like the trolley tour and the pirate museum. I wanted to do Mel Fisher's last time but got veto'd by my sister and her husband who preferred the pirate museum.

I personally do not enjoy the ride down. But then again, it is 7 hours from my house. My mom lives at MM 27. Lots of fun places on that key that she can recommend for a bite to eat or a drink.
