Has Anyone Read Atlas Shrugged?

I tried once... finally gave up after wasting enough time to get at least halfway through... not my style.

My first thought was, why did I wait this long in my life to read this book. It is my favorite book as well as my husband's and his entire family. This book didn't give me my ideals and morals, but it stated them in eloquent ways I never quite could. I definitely define myself as having a Randian philosophy. I love discussing this book!

Have you seen any of the Who is John Galt? signs?

I have only seen one. It was actually this summer. We were driving home to Ohio from Disney actually and saw one on the road. I thought about turning us around so I could go back and take a picture.

I've read it and studied objectivism and I always find that most people's use of Rand's ideas to be very peculiar. For instance, she explicitly rejects Christianity and Christian morality, and yet many conservatives cite her work on a regular basis.

I do enjoy her writing style, though. I've read several of her books.

That was my first thought as well. Furthermore that book could have been written YESTERDAY and not written 53 years ago. I think you can ignore the philosophy and ideology and in fact not care about it at all, and still find an exciting, thought provoking novel with interesting characters, great heros and loathsome villains. DS#3 has read it twice. I have lent my book to my neighbor who read it and shared it with her daughter.

I actually have a vanity license plate frame on the front of my CTS. Seemed appropriate.

I don't think one has to accept all of her ideas in order to accept her philosophy with regard to ideology. Afterall, she understands communism and socialism as well as anyone. She lived it. Economically, she is correct. That is becoming more apparent every day.

Rand is a libertarian relativist.

She's a libertarian/ fiscal conservative's dream and a social conservative's nightmare.

I guess if one chooses to tout a book that plugs some of their ideas but directly rejects others as a HUGE part of what she sees as the problem, that's their right.

Of course, that parts that you hate about her book are probably the parts that I love, but the parts that I dislike are why I never plug her book because too much of it contradicts my views. ;)
