Looking over what I have for travel insurance before, I see that my credit card has some pretty good insurance on it for medical, car, and trip insurance. Just wondering what experience people have had with dealing with credit card companies if they've had to use those benefits. I just have to wonder how readily they are to pass out benefits.

I had a friend fall in vegas last year and break her foot, the bill was $2300 and the flight home was 600. Mastercard covered all of it and it only took about three weeks to get all her money.

It would have to be really good insurance. You really need to read the documents carefully.

Health care in the U.S. is astronomically expensive, and so you really need to check the limits of the various policies.

I am a Canadian teacher with the gold standard in health insurance, and I can get pretty much anything covered, for out of province coverage, and none of my platinum/gold credit cards that I carry now, or have carried in the past, even come close (hubby's a banker, so we have high limit and high perk credit cards) to my actual health care coverage.

Best of luck in your research on the medical aspect of the insurance, Tiger

We have th BOM Airmiles (Old Mosiac Westjet) card and purchased the extra insurance. Last year we had a cruise booked and our 28 year old son had his colitis flare up and Doctors thought that he would need some major surgery. Two weeks before the cruise, I phoned the insurance company, explained the situation and they told me that I was to wait and phone up 2 days before the travel date to cancel the cruise and that I would be fully covered. To make a long story short, they started to give my son a drug called Remicad, and he started to improve after 3 days to the point where his doctor told us that it would be stupid to cancel as he was very happy with the turn of events. So......I never actually collected on it but felt safe that I would have been looked after.

I lost my camera at WDW and the BMO Mastercard insurance covered the cost of the camera. I had to get a copy of the lost and found form from Disney.

On our next trip because of the snow in Minneapolis we were unable to fly out of Orlando and stayed at the airport hotel. BMO Mastercard covered the hotel for the night.

I would look carefully at the car insurance, most credit cards don't have 3rd party liability. We get a yearly add on to our ICBC car insurance (B.C.) called Road Star, it has complete car rental insurance, at a fraction of the cost that the car rentals charge.

I've never trusted the credit card health insurance, and get an annual multi trip policy with BCAA. Or Blue Cross.

It depends on your credit card co. A friend had a claim for trip insurance, can't remember what happened, but she said it was a headache getting any compensation. Had to find her original Visa Statement, and on it went.

Another friend had a car accident in England, and car was a write off, car company billed his Visa for the cost of the car, and while Visa eventually paid, it was awhile because they were dealing with the car company, and other person's insurance to determine blame, etc. The bottom line, was he wasn't reimbursed the considerable interest incurred.

i used the out of province medical- just call the number if something is wrong and they take care of everything-they even sent a dr to to my hotel-he adminstered tests and gave me a filled prescription- i never paid a cent

I would be using the credit card health benefits and trip interruption/baggage loss option if need be, but I have travel benefits through my company group benefits through Blue Cross, and the benefits are rather extensive, but in case, god forbid, something happened, I just want to have all of my bases covered. I would also be dependant on the credit card coverage for rental insurance, but my current car insurance actually covers rental insurance, and covers 3rd parties, which is nice, but again, just in case something happened, I just want to know that I can count on my credit card (especially since I pay a yearly fee to have that card!).

My 2 cents...........most companies carry overseas medical coverage, so what I look for is basically trip cancellation/interuption etc. Keep in mind that these 2 are not the same. Some credit card companies will give you trip interuption but not cancellation and you can add this on if you need be. I know my Amex gives me interuption but not cancellation. Now I have heard that the RBC Avion card offers it all but it comes with a annual fee.

Good luck. When you find out what worked best for you, let us know so it will help us when we need it.

I lost a newly-purchased camera once and made a claim using my CC's "Extended Purchase Coverage". It turns out that all their coverage was, was to pay the deductable on a house insurance claim for a lost item. The problem was the value of the camera was less than the deductable on my house insurance. I'd have to make a claim to my house insurance (and have it denied because it was below the deductable, but it would still count as a claim and my insurance rates could be affected) and then make the CC protection claim. It took a lot of phone calls to get things done so I wouldn't have to make the home owners claim, but eventually got the CC plan to pay for the replacement.

Oh thank god for this thread. I've been wondering how to ask insurance questions and not sound like a total idiot because ... frankly, insurance questions boggle my mind.

When I rent a car, I use my RB Visa card that supposedly has insurance on it. My own car insurance covers a rental car too. Am I covered or should I still be getting 3rd party liability insurance? This is the wording for my own car insurance:

"... we will provide coverages for the liability imposed by law or assumed by any written agreement for loss or damage to a non-owned automobile including its equipment resulting from the care, custod or control of that non-owned automobile by an insured person."

Should I be buying extra insurance or am I fine? (I haven't been but everytime I read more insurance posts, I get worried.) I've talked to my insurance company before but ... for some reason, I'm never reassured when I do that. :rotfl:

And now a question about travel insurance. We buy separate medical insurance so I'm not so much wondering about medical insurance. If my RB VISA says it has travel insurance, does it only insure me or does it insure everybody that I used the card to purchase flights/vacations for.... ie.... I buy the airfare for my family and/or friends, are my family and/or friends covered?

You would be best off to call them for this information to get accurate information for complete piece of mind. I'm sure they would be more than happy to answer your questions and they could advise you if you would need additional coverage or not.

I know ... I was just trying to avoid that. :rotfl: They speak Insurancegalese which I don't understand. :rotfl2:

I thought I had 3rd party liability insurance, as per my insurance policy, but when I called my insurance company this past week, they told me that in fact, I didn't on rented vehicles. He told me you cannot just get 3rd party liability insurance on any vehicles, and in fact, the insurance company should be ensuring that they have that on all vehicles, regardless of wether or not we decline the insurance on the car.

Looking over the car rental online, I don't see anywhere where you can purchase 3rd party liability insurance on anywhere. Anybody know anything about this?

Which car rental company are you using? It usually doesn't show up until you get to the last page of the booking. It's also called Extended Protection (Alamo) Supplemental Liability Insurance (SLI) (National, Budget, Thrifty)
With Thrifty and Dollar they don't have the choice of just choosing the SLI online but you can do it at the counter when you get there if you want it. Just make sure it's only the Liability and not the Collision too.
Rental cars in Florida do have a limited amount of liability insurance but not enough to cover a major claim that's why it's called Extended Liability or Supplemental Liability.

When I was looking at Hotwire to lease a car for our stay in MCO in May, they offered insurance coverage thru Access America. I decided to call them directly to be sure we would be covered and sure enough, the coverage is only for US residents! I would have paid $80USD and would not have been covered if anything happened.

Dh is going to check his Amex to see what coverage we have thru them...and now I have to figure out who to get medical insurance thru!
