Has anyone had the new V&A menu yet?

We have reservations for this Wednesday and I'm really curious about what everyone's experience has been with the menu change.

Did you get 9 courses, or 12? What did they serve?

Is it a completely different menu every evening, or do some dishes get carried on from night to night?

They did call, but they just went over our allergies and preferences, the new price, and the dress code. There was no hint of what might be on the menu aside from what I could deduce from the types of food she asked if my husband would eat. Even then, it was just a list of ingredients. The meals themselves could be just about anything.

I did slide into the conversation that I'd seen prior menus that contained coconut curry and that if there DID happen to be coconut curry I would be extra super delighted because it's my favorite, but all that netted was an awkward pause before she said, "Hm, okay. I can write that down, but that's not a promise there will be." I told her that I 100% understood and was just mentioning it on the off chance. She seemed a little offput that I'd asked -- perhaps that was an overstep. Oh well, what's done is done.

OK, just us? DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT :). V&A is the number 2 rated restaurant in the United States :).
Dear wife and I have visited MANY times over the past 12 years. Your bill, for 2, is going to be in the $750 region, with appropriate 20% tip. Just let them FEED you :). You will love it :).

Needless to say... this is NOT Le Celier :).

V&A: No TIW, No DDP.

I will!! I'd be lying if I said I wasn't nervous about all choice being removed, though. I looked at their current menu online and I'm not feeling hot on a few of the dishes. Hopefully that's just a sample...?

What happens if we get there and I'm like, "I'm sorry, but I really don't like this meal"? Is it just our bad luck?

When I was there last I did the 10 course that doesn’t have options, but there were a few items I didn’t want. So I asked if they could be replaced with something else and it wasn’t a problem. When you get the menu look it over and if there is something you know you won’t like ask if there is something you could change it for. Doesn’t hurt to ask

I just looked at the sample menu and, like you, my initial reaction would be to doubt some items. But I can tell you that prior to a past visit I would have sworn to you I didn’t like butternut squash, quail, salmon, or Brussels sprouts and they proved me wrong on multiple courses. There was one dish - scallops - where I was “right” and still didn’t care for them but all in all I was so glad I tried everything. I think the odds are that there may be a course or two that isn’t quite your cup of tea but I’d imagine they’ll go out of their way if they find you aren’t enjoying multiple courses. I was supposed to go last week and was so sad to have to cancel. Hoping to find another date soon. Can’t wait to hear about your experience! Have fun!!!!!

Thank you for the feedback! I actually just spoke to them on the phone and she pretty much put all of my fears to bed. She told me that if it takes bringing my husband a plate of chicken nuggets (it won't, thank God), he'll go home happy. They've done it before.

I'm now super excited and ready to go! I'll definitely post back on Thursday with an update. :)

That’s terrific!! So glad you called! :goodvibes

I am laughing like a hyena :). Chicken nuggets? Yup, whatever it takes... they can do that :). Bet they were the BEST Chicken Nuggets on the Planet :).
Any truly GREAT Restaurant... the menu is a suggestion - generally a GOOD one. But I have no doubt that if Boris or Israel got a request for a Corn Dog? They would produce a MASTERPIECE :). On the fly :).

And MUST add - you were WISE to call, and TALK to the Restaurant. Few people do this sort of thing, today, because they have forgotten what really GREAT Restaurants DO.

Looking at the sample Degaustation menu online we had the following on our trip this past May:
Delta Asparagus with Imperial Caviar 8/10
Virginia Black Bass with Poppy Seed and Lemon Ravioli 10/10 - one of the best dishes of the entire trip, tied or just behind 2 dishes I had at Morimoto Asia's Omakase
Wild Turbot with Toasted Capers and Preserved Lemon 8/10 - we've had this twice before and this one was the most underwhelming but still fantastic
Dover Sole with Langoustine and Spanish Chorizo Bouillabaisse (Sans-Langoustine as that was its own course in place of the King Crab) 6/10
Australian Kobe-Style Beef with Potato Pinwheel 8/10, basically butter poached or butter soaked and slow roasted wheels of potato with kobe beef and at the time Ramp Chimichurri
Bittersweet Chocolate Dome on Praline Crunch - 6/10 good but way too rich of a way to end the 10 course, I would have preferred one of the souflee's instead

At 12 courses and whatever "enhanced service" is I'm even more excited to go back to QVR in December!

If that helps, we dined there on July 25 and we had 10 courses (we didn't buy any extra course), counting the coffee, so 9 courses. We shared a wine pairing and the sherry (served during the cheese/dessert course) was out of this world. I'd never had any before and I'm quite addicted. Do leave room after the cheese - the chocolate dessert is incredibly filling and indulgent and almost finished us off. Enjoy!

Not exactly -- they got rid of the option of how many courses to get. Now it's the 'chef's degustation menu' and you get somewhere between 9 and 12 courses, depending on what the chef feels like doing with it that night.

So it looks like they are serving some of the dishes on the sample menu pretty steadily, and there's just some variation there?

I've rarely had what was on the sample menu, sometimes it was none of the items they had listed. I think it's only there to give people an idea of what they could serve, not what they will be serving constantly.
