Has anyone had a bad expierence renting points from a DVC'er???

We've never had a problem renting points, but our first priority was feeling comfortable with the owner. I know it's difficult to describe but I always have a feeling about how the transaction is taking place. As far as price, we appreciate the chance to rent at a deluxe resort for a discount, so $11 is a great price. You will often see lower rates for last minute trips. Wish we could do last minute, but not yet!

I have contacted two different people about renting points at DVC for my upcoming vacation (both had contacted me initially when I inquired about renting points) but they are terrible regarding their responses and follow up. At this point, no money has exchanged hands but it is making me think twice about renting points from a stranger??? I'm just getting a bad feeling about the whole thing! (I've done it once but that was through a friend of mine and it was such a great expeirence, I love DVC!)

How far have you gotten in your communications? Two people contacted you with their price, did you respond back "I need $7" or even "how about $8.50." They may just drop it at that point - knowing they can get $10+ for their points. Did someone commit to checking reservations for you and then never get back to you....that's a little more problematic.

A lot of owners that rent just walk away from lowball negotiations - it isnt' worth their time and its too easy to get "taken." Right now, you are dealing with the awareness that there were a bunch of people that were taking advantage of people to get low prices on points with sob stories that weren't true.

But here is another question I have.....why would someone rent to you at $7 when they know the going rate is $10+? A friend, sure, I'd rent to a friend for $7 - but a stranger on the internet? I think you are setting yourself up for getting taken. "If something seems to be too good to be true, it often is."

I think there is a misinterpretation of the responses to the initial question. From what I can tell, those who have responded have attempted to derive a reason as to why the OP has not engaged in any serious correspondence with the points owners. From reading the OP's inquiry, the quest was for points rented at a rate of $7 per point. I would come to the same conclusion as many of the others who responded to the question posed here -- that the points owner can probably rent at a higher rate per point. Therefore, it's no surprise that they would be hesitant to contact the OP. As for the statement that $8.5 per point is not something the OP would consider cheap, I think most DVC owners would agree that it is, in fact, an extremely good rate for such a transaction. So the responses shouldn't really be viewed as inflammatory in any way. Truthfully, they are attempting to be informative as to why the OP isn't getting much communication. No harm intended.

(I can't buy DVC because of DH. He hates to buy groceries in advance of being hungry.)

It's funny that you just suggeted this because a small contract at WLV just became availiable and I took it! Hopefully if we pass ROFR at Disney then I won't have to deal with any of this point renting craziness!!!

Why not get their phone numbers, so you can call if you need a quicker response if you need to...

Sometimes people can fall behind on email, due to life circumstances, so I think a phone call would be a good way to establish trust.

$7 or $11....that's between renter and rentee. But getting back to the OP, if you get bad feelings, don't pursue it. It's basically a 2 sided trust agreement and you have to feel comfortable with who your dealing with.

Below are two threads where I have posted my advice on renting points. If you read these posts you will see that I never would have responded to a request to rent points for $7 per point, if that is what you were offering. If the price was not stated in the original request then the correspondence would abruptly end as soon as someone mentioned $7. It is too easy to rent points for $10-$15 per point to waste time with someone offering $7 per point.

Perhaps there has been a misunderstanding. You may not have known the value of the points that you were requested. I suggest that you post a request for a reservation without mentioning price and see what is offered.

I don't think you were being attacked . good luck on your purchase. also I try to get back to someone asap even it it is low I just state I can't do it. I have been renting for about 12 -16$$ a point . I think because I have been around awhile they will pay more to feel safe. and the main thing is that I am always available by email.cell or home phone anytime. I try for good service and contact and people come back and I thank them for that. also you do have to laugh when you see I can only afford 7-8$$ or someone is sick and we are all going on this trip.then can't they all chip in? or like someone said go to a value resort if that's all you can afford. I'm going to the pop on sept 27 for the free dining gave up the BWV for that .so someone else can stay there if that's all they can afford

I think the DVC renters are really selling themselves short on the value of their points. I know there is a huge amount of trust that has to be on the buyers side, maybe that is why someone sells so low, to make the buyer feel better??

Actually, the rack rate is over $300 once you add taxes in!

Your post has only been up for a couple of days. Don't forget the ability to purchase the DDP without park passes! The right buyer who wants that hard to get time will find you. It really helps, IMO, that you are an established and active member of the DIS.

the price that the people and I agreed upon was $8.5 and $9.5 which I don't consider cheap......

sorry you feel that way but IMO anything under $12 a pt is a great deal and very cheap.

Just a studio at BCV through Disney is about $300 a nt ( now that's not cheap)

if you want cheap you need to go to the value resorts
