Has anyone every gotten a room upgrade at check in???

Hi guys!! I was just wondering if it was rude to ask if there was any upgrades available at check in??? We are staying at the WL in Sept which is a really slow time so I was wondering if and how often this could happen??? If you have asked or would ask, how would you phrase it so it doesn't sound too rude? Thanks

The last time we were at WDW we stayed at WL and I asked about upgrading to conceirge. We were able to do so for an extra $45 per night. Since we were planning to spend a lot of time at the resort it was really worth it for us. As far as a free upgrade I suppose it wouldn't hurt to ask nicely.

I'm curious too...about everything. We're going to be at CSR in Sept and I'm certainly hoping for an upgrade but will be happy just being close to the Mouse!
What I'm really wishing for would be a true pixie dust moment...I would love a Jr. Suite and would even be willing to pay some for the upgrade but can't afford too much. I'm still trying to figure out how to fax a request for a certain area and then turn around and ask about the suite when I get there without looking like I'm just trying to take advantage of them. I know they get asked for so much. So please keep your fingers crossed for me and if the pixie dust fairies are watching...I need your help

When I checked into Boardwalk Villas two years ago, I was upgraded from a studio to a one bedroom with a preferred view. I was really nice to the CM and made small talk about his hometown. When I received my keys he thanked me for being so polite and friendly and asked me if I would like the studio I booked or an upgrade - of course I took the upgrade! It made my trip over looking the boardwalk and being able to see the EPCOT fireworks from my room!

2 years ago we were upgraded at the Grand Floridian. At checkin, the CM said he had good news and more good news. The first good news was that our room was ready. The more good news was that we were upgraded to concierge! We didn't ask; it just happened. We had just gotten back from a Disney cruise and were only staying for 2 nights. Maybe the length of our stay had something to do with it?

We also were upgraded to a courtyard view on our first stay at the WL. We originally had reserved a Woods view, but it was close to the service area. During the first night we could hear trucks coming and going (deliveries and garbage pickups). The next morning we explained the noise at the front desk; they said they understood; and they moved us to a courtyard view, no extra charge. It was a smart move on Disney's part, because now we always go for the courtyard view when we stay at the WL.

One time we booked a standard view room at AKL, and got upgraded to a pool view. We didn't ask though....we just took it.

When we checked into WL last May, the CM told me we had been upgraded to a Courtyard view (we had booked a woodsview), we didn't ask for it, she just gave it to us.
In November we stayed at CSR, I "think" it "might" have been an upgrade, since our room overlooked a "pond". The CM never said anything at checkin, I never asked for a upgrade, I was surprised to see a pond out my window.
Checking into the Poly this May, can't even dare to dream about an upgrade there!!

In feb at AKL we were upgraded from standard view to savana view at no charge. The amazing part was that we were only paying $119 a night anyway. It was my DD birthday though.

When my wife and I were on our honeymoon, we got upgraded from a standard view to a king water view with a wet bar at the Beach Club. VERY nice! We didn't ask, it just happened.

Then we switched to the Polynesian. We asked the CM how much it would cost to upgrade to Lagoon view from standard view. I thought I'd either get a nice free offer, or maybe one of those $40/night dealies. She told me $75 more per night.

We kept our garden view!

We have never been upgraded at the WDW Resorts, but we have been upgraded at the Swan/Dolphin (used my Starwood Preferred guest card).

Not rude at all!

Simply say "Are there any upgrades available?"

You'll hear one of three things...

1. Sorry, not today.
2. We have upgrades to "insert room type here" available for "$X" per night.
3. I could upgrade you to a "X" view for free.

If you are looking for a further upgrade you could then say "What would it cost me to get a "X" type of room?

If you really ahve your heart set on something, then book that to avoid disappointment. At WDW I book what I really want rather than taking the chance. In other hotels I ALWAYS ask about an upgrade--unless it's a Hampton that I'm sleeping/showering in as an overnight stop on a longer trip, if that makes sense

They no longer take faxes for certain requests, it will just go into the garbage. Instead you need to have that type of request added directly to your reservation.

Rather than asking for "an upgrade", you'd be better off flat out asking "What will it cost me to upgrade to a Junior Suite?" at check-in. That way they know exactly what you are looking for instead of wondering if you mean a specific view.

Thanks for that advice. I'm glad to know about the faxes...would have been kind of disappointed to to think they knew what I wanted but just didn't like me and didn't offer it to me
I guess thats what I'll do...just come out and ask. I'm a people pleaser (childhood disease that never went away LOL) and hate to feel like I'm putting someone "out" by asking for favors. <sigh> I'll just bite the bullet and ask.

We went in February for our 1st anniversary and when we checked into the GF (we had a standard lagoon biew booked) they upgraded us to one of the turret honeymoon rooms in the main building concierge. We didn't ask.

I've stayed at WL 2 and was upgraded w/out asking both times. We stayed at the YC and was upgraded for a measly 10 dollars a night. We go in prepared to ask how much it costs to upgrade if any are available. Good Luck!

Both times at GF have been upgraded to lagoon view, first time I didn't even realize it was an upgrade till we got to the room Two weeks ago I had spoken with the room assigner, had found our paperwork from the '99 visit, had no idea what building it was but liked the location. While talking with him I explained it was our daughter's 8th birthday this trip and she had asked me to switch our CR tower room to the GF. He said to call him back 5 days out and he'd remind himself to do something special for her. Boy was it, we had a view of MK, train station, space mountain and the fireworks. Really spoils you. Our YC visit we were upgraded to water (lagoon) view just by asking for a higher floored room. I've found if you're friendly and courteous the CM's seem more inclined to upgrade you.
