Has anyone ever bought more points than they need?

Hi,
First, I wanted to thank all of you for the valuable information I have learned here about DVC. We are trying to decide on a resale purchase. We have a 4yo DD and a DS on the way. We usually spend a week in FL during the winter with a weekend at the beach (at a friends) and 5 or 6 days at Disney. 150 points should work well for us for now but we may need more in the future as the kids grow. My question is this - has anyone ever bought more points than they need now with the plan to rent the extra until they are needed? Maybe starting with 200-210?

We have added-on five times, for a total of six contracts. We still do not have all the points we would like. We are considering SSR, as the 11 month window for a GV would appeal to us. We would also like the extra points to do things like The Plaza in NY, and other stuff.

IMO, you can never have too many points......

Not here, although I'm sure it happens.

Generally, more points translates into a bigger unit, a longer stay, an extra trip, or maybe guests.

We have the minimum contract - which suits us fine. We are only looking at a one or two bedroom every other year for a week - and not during the busy seasons. But if I did have more points, I'd be able to use them - if not our family, with the list of people who have come forward with "if you ever have extra points" and "if you are ever looking for company."

Hi.

Assuming extra points are not a financial burden to you, get them now. Figure out how many you'll need for a 2 bedroom at various times of the year, because that's what you'll ultimately want with a family of four. That's how we arrived at how many points we "need". (we are also a family of four)

Remember that while you can always add on, the cost of points only goes up and home resorts sell out, etc. And like you suggested you could always rent them.

We joined in Sept. '02 and we've already added on...

I have to agree, we have 2 kids Son - 6 and Daughter - 5 and we get a 2 bedroom. We could probably get away with a 1 bedroom for another couple of years, but it is nice not to have to put the sofa bed down and up all the time and the kids play in what they consider "their room" and they don't mess up the living room.

1) You can never be too handsome.
2) You can never be too rich.
3) You can never have too much computer harddisc space.
4) You can never have too many DVC points.

ha ha ha, I like that one, I really do!!!!! too many points!!! that's a good one :smooth:

Too many points??! Not possible;)

When I first bought into DVC in '99, I figured that I had enough points... After a few trips (and a stay in VB), I felt the need to purchase a small add on... At this point, I figured I had enough points.

Just now, with the MB offer for VB, my DW and I have decided to add yet more VB points....

Watching the DVC promo video a couple months ago, a customer made a quote that will stick with me for a while... (Yeah.. Yeah... I know... Watching the 30 min DVC commercial in my spare time... Bad idea...)

"When you grow up, you almost never remember what you received from your parents for Birthdays or X-Mas... Those memories fade with time... What doesn't fade though is those trips... The special times on vacation with family and friends... That's what kids remember for a lifetime..."

So no... As long as you can finanically afford it, and are comfortable with the payments, I don't think its possible to have too many points..

That is a very true statement above.

Hello - I had to click on and see who reported they had too many points, and it was just as I suspected...no one! Seriously, we started out with the idea we would travel every year for a week and get a 2 bedroom. Well, we had to add on already because a week is too short...we love the parks but also love hanging out at the resort and swimming.
I also want Hilton Head points too! Good luck with your decision.

Weight Watchers and DVC: At the end of the day, you always wish you had more points to use.

anniet--I agree with both your statements 100%! And I have 700 pts--on DVC not weight watchers, although that's one trade I might think seriously of making, and using all those points at Boma's:p

If anyone here thinks they have too many points, feel free to gift one of your contracts to me! ;)

 Cool! You can do that?????? ;) ;) ;) Is banking (oops, never mind :p ) or borrowing allowed, too??? :teeth: :teeth:

I would consider buying what you think you need for family vacations and then a bit more for mom and dad getaways...a needed sanity boost (IMHO) from time to time. Congrats on your expanding family...remember one plus one seems like much more than two!

BTW, we started at 300 and we thought that might be way too much...2 more contracts later we are up to 500 and we still borrow!

PS: A form of banking and borrowing is allowed on WW too! I'm also always in perpetual borrowing, just like DVC!

Too many? Actually a tough question. Technically, we probably have too many, just DW and myself with enough points for about 4 weeks in a 1 bedroom and we only have 3 weeks total vacation. But we have found we "burn" the extra points by bringing guests once a year and trading out - doing the Holland America cruise to Alaska this year. With the buffer, we can go when we want (Christmas this year) and stay in the accommodations that we want, so I guess, I must agree, there is no such thing as too many.

That's where I would spend my WW points too Cruella!!!

A friend of ours and his wife came up from Sarasota and spent a night at VWL this year and he just lost 50 pounds on WW. He was asking us how DVC worked and when DBF tried to explain, he kept getting confused. Finally I said "Jay, it's just like a Weight Watchers timeshare. You buy your points, use them on whatever accomodations you like at different seasons, and you can bank and borrow them from year to year!" He immediately got the concept!:p :)
