I just wondered if the lure of Orlando has made anyone move over there, or start the process? We are seriously thinking about it, but it will be a while in the future if we do.

we've been dreaming about it for ages.its something we'd like to do, but havent looked into it properly.
we used to live in Essex and moved to the midlands, i know its a short distance compared to Florida but it gives us a bit of an idea. eg cant visit friends at the drop of a hat, moving away from friends and family.

my brothers just moved to Australia and he's having a great time :cool1:

its something we'd love to do, perhaps when sons older.

Getting a green card isn't easy......

Deciding you want to move there doesn't mean you can move there.

I think everyone here would like to move to Orlando ;) Never looked into it properly though.

Good luck with your plans:goodvibes

totally agree with this statement - my son is a city and guilds qualified plumber (heating engineer he says) no shortage of work or foreigners here, but he's young and wants to move to a place where he can enjoy the outdoor life more, so he has looked into it, and without going on and on. It is very hard to get a green card (though not impossible) you can work over there on a student exchange plan (ie disney/seaworld etc) or from what I can gather you must been moving an existing business over there or open a further branch of your business - failing that marry an american (woah! - the marriage bit put him off). Its not a impossibility but its certainly not as straight forward as going to new zealand or australia.

Thats why its a long term plan. Hoping to go back to college next year and start re-training in something that would help. Not sure what yet.... Need to start doing alot of research!! We did a similar thing, moved from Sussex to Staffs last year and to be honest, havent really missed anyone or anything so dont think emmigrating would be a problem in that sense!

I wouldnt want to live in Florida as I think it would ruin it for me

but I would like to live in the states

DH works for a company with offices there, and could apply for a transfer, but what would I do? lol I doubt theyre in desperate need of nursery nurses.

I've thought about it before but think it would ruin some of the magic if I could go everyday....but we are seriously considering emigrating to Australia in the next 5 or so years.

My DH would go tomorrow if he could ;) , I emigrated to Australia with my family in the early 1980's and I loved it and would love to go back, but the thought of leaving my family behind is what keeps us here :grouphug: , and as the saying goes, the grass isn't always greener!!.

No, you'd have to count me out! In fact we could move to the USA any time that we chose to, but for now we want to live here! :goodvibes

No, I love it as a holiday destination, but living there doesn't appeal to me at all.

Nor me. I remember on our first trip we went horseriding and our guide was getting very excited over the countryside ~ all I could think was it wasn't a patch on our countryside back home, give me the New Forest, a Cornish beach or a Welsh mountain any day! ;)

I love Florida as a holiday destination, especially the wonderful beaches, but think there are probably much nicer areas in the US to live. Also, perhaps I've seen too many Extreme Makeover programmes :rotfl: but so many families seem to struggle to survive when they hit hard times.

To be honest as much as I used to want to live in Orlando, not anymore. It even feels bad saying that. :sad2:

I go there on holiday, because I love Orlando. Its the only place that my family and I enjoy. I would never want to spoil that. Another reason is we simply do not feel that living in the USA would enhance our life. There are too many cons and especially the living costs and many other reasons.

We are emigrating to Oz when my husband finishes his CIMA and I have finished my nursing, which will be in 3 years. My sister in law is also moving to Perth. This would make the move so much easier. We are not happy in the UK, although leaving my family and best friend would be one of the hardest things that I would ever have to do. The whole lifestyle appeals to us alot more than a UK lifestyle.

If you want to move to US. I would really look into the living costs. I.e health care and prescription costs. Unemployment rate and schools.

Have you been on british expats. They have alot of information there including agents who maybe able to point you in the right direction, if you want to train in an area. :thumbsup2

Good luck.

Thanks. Will try n have a look on the ex pats site- do you have an address for it?

I'll go along with the minority, no WAY would i want to live in a country where the economy is worse than here, where even if you have a skill thats considered needed you may be sent home straight away if you can't get proper employment. Where health care is so expensive, where weather conditions are so extreme, where my children would feel out of the loop as their education wasn't the same, where my qualifications count for nothing, to say nothing of the fact that my friends would be so far away and I'd be expected to put them all up for at least two weeks every year!
No, Floridas fantastic, in fact i love every part of the states I've vistied but britain is Great for a reason.

Not me or mine! I love getting my USA holiday fix but when we leave London, it'll be to head back to France... :goodvibes

I'm moving there for a year to work for Disney but I would love to live there permanently.

A difficult one this. I think the thought of it is a lot more appealing than the reality, in the long run at least.

My missis used to work at the Rose and Crown (we met after she returned and i blame her for becoming a disney lover:thumbsup2 ). She goes on and on about how great living there was and how wonderful the lifestyle is. She talks about the disposable income, cheapish living costs, the weather etc. She used to say she'd move tomorrow if we could get green cards.
However this last trip we met up with a couple of her old work mates who'd managed to get second VISA's and had gone back to work for Disney. Both said that it wasnt the same.
In the interests of fairness i should say that we also a friend who stayed out there got married and now has a green card, he still loves it.
I believe that when my misses originally went out there she was living in the commons with young, similar minded individuals who were all (the servers at least) earning a good living and had disposable income. They were in the entertainment capital of the world had the money to enjoy it and didnt have any of the real world that emigrating to Orlando would bring with it. Medical insurance/schools etc
I love going to Orlando and fully expect to be going for a long time but i also love coming back to 'miserable, wet Britain';) I also think that my missis would love it out the initially but would soon realise the living, working and raising a family is a lot different to working in the rose and crown and going to Bennighans every night to get drunk.

Apart from that it is practically impossible to get a green card without marrying a US citizen unless;

you can get a major company to sponsor you and created a job that the government believe that only you can do or

you can prove you employ x number of US citizen and your business brings a valuable service to the area or

you have Irish heritage and want to enter the Irish green card lottery or

can prove you have a stupid amount of money in the bank

your chances are slim to none. As an example i know the US a crying out for people in my industry, its highly trained job and not one you can just turn up and do, yet there is absolutely no chance of me getting a green card......yes my missis did check:confused3

personally i think its a wonderful holiday destination and want to going as often as possible but making it my permanent home isnt for me.
