I am curious if anyone has been bumped on an airline, or taken a bump. What happens to your luggage if it's already on the flight? Will they remove it, or will it be waiting at the airport when you get there? If so, is that safe...do they hold it somewhere for when you arrive?

My last trip in May, after everyone was boarded, they announced the flight was overbooked and asked for volunteers to give up their seats in exchange for vouchers. I really wanted to take it as I was arriving at 10:00 am and could spare the extra hours it would take to get there. But I was afraid of where my luggage would end up, so I kept quiet. I want to be prepared the next time if it's offered.

your bags will go on unless they get them pulled from the flight. they can match the bag nbrs to your pnr and get them. then put them on the same flt as you or they will pull them aside at your destination. its a royal pain pulling them but if the psgr wants it done they can do it. its much easier to pull them aside when they offload the aircraft at the destination.

Hi Beverly Lynn...Just where would they hold them?

The best advice is to not check luggage!! We have been to Washington D.C., Hawaii, and Orlando twice,(once for ten days). We were forced to check one bag, on the Hawaii trip, even though is was carryon size, because it had wheels!! Never heard of that before, I guess thats what you get for flying Hobo Joes Two Wheeled Flying Machine Airlines!!!
Going to Orlando in November for ten more days and will not check luggage.

A funny thing happened to us when we got bumped...the flight we were bumped off of had a flat tire and had to return to the gate...we arrived before our original flight and had to wait for our luggage!!! I was so excited to be getting so much voucher $$, that I never even thought about my luggage!

I've never been involuntarily bumped (my FF status is high enough--that's a great reason to be loyal to one or two carriers, even if you pay an extra few bucks for a ticket here and there!). When flying standby, or if I know my flights are very full, I'll wait to check luggage and gate check once I know I'm getting on that flight. I travel really lightly, so often don't even need to check luggage. Just packed last night for 8 days in Orlando and it all fits into a average sized tote that will fit under the seat in front of me.

I have often taken a voluntary bump. I like to fly FC, and generally when taking the voluntary, I can get upgraded to FC on the next flight and a voucher. I tell them when I check in that my travel plans are flexible, and that I'd be happy to negotiate and take a later flight. Generally they'll call me if they need volunteers, and depending on what they are offering, we can usually make it work. I'm often happy to take the upgrade and a $100 voucher, saves them the $100 (they normally have to give you $200 if you will arrive more than 2 hours but less than 4 hours late, and $400 if you arrive more than 4 hours late.) Depending on my mood, how many FF miles I have, and what my travel plans in the next year are, I'd rather have the upgarde than the voucher. Right now I have purchased tickets for a lot of my travel for next year already, and have a ton of FF miles, plus each of us already has an unused voucher, so the upgrade would be more important to me :-)

Was at the airport yesterday seeing DH off ( to NY not Disney) and they announced that if anyone would take a bump they would receive a round trip ticket good for anywhere in the US.I thought that would be great for our Disney trip but DH said his company would not like him missing his meeting! Oh well no job no Disney!

PS The time difference was only 45 minutes!

We volunteered to be bumped this past New Year's and were so delighted to stay in Orlando for three extra days that we didn't care if our luggage went home without us. We have bright green luggage and we happened to notice it being loaded onto the plane! After a few phone calls, they were able to retrieve it for us! We couldn't believe our luck.

I've been bumped many times (voluntary). Your luggage will go on the original flight and be held at your destination. I have found that it depends on the airport and airline where your luggage is held. My experience with MCO last year with Continental was that they had a roped off area where an employee carefully checked our checked baggage stubs against the bags we were taking. It was well worth the $200 each plus flying first class to arrive an hour and a half later. Good luck.
