Hanging stockings with no mantle

Does anyone have any suggestions about how to hang Christmas stockings with no mantle. I was thinking of ordering one of those pub mirrors with a hook. It would look nice in my living room but it would take up wall space from some of my artwork.

Do those commander hooks really work?

The Command hooks work- I have used them in the past (we have a fireplace now:thumbsup2). I just wasn't too fond of the look.

I think the pub mirror with hooks is a great idea. Could you just put it up for the Holidays? Then you would only have to replace your artwork for a little while.

I use those hooks all of the time in my classroom, some in my house to hang pics. It's nice because they say on the package how many pounds they can hold. I also like that they come off very easily!

I have a wooden stocking hanger that stands alone and holds four stockings at a time. I ordered it from LTD Commodities years ago but I know they are available from other gift type catalogs. Mine is a wooden Santa but this is a similar idea:

I hang ours from the staircase with pipe cleaners and tie them with bows. It looks very pretty. I've also seen ads for hooks, but haven't tried them myself.

We have a brick fireplace but no mantel. I stuck the Command hooks on the brick and the draped some garland across them all to dress it up a little bit.

One of the hooks did come un-stuck last year, but it was with DH's stocking & it was pretty heavy so I wasn't too surprised.

We didn't have a fireplace when I was growing up. We hung our stockings on the staircase banister.

I've seen a cute idea on Pinterest in various forms of a stocking hanger. It's a rectangular wood board that you can either attach hanging hooks or even cabinet knobs to for hanging stockings. On the board, above the hooks, you paint "The stockings were hung..." You can either just modify some simple board (I saw one that looked like a stock cabinet door) or get a raw one that you stain or decorate yourself. It looked very simple for even a lazy DIY'er like me. Plus you can make it as big or little as you want, and stow it away after every holiday.

FWIW: I know one of the versions I saw looked commercially done, so you may be able to buy one somewhere if you have no interest in making one.

Edited to add: I've also hung them from bookcases in the past using the weighted stocking hangers. I had to store a few things away to make room, but just for a month.

I also use ribbons to hang ours from the staircase bannister.

We hang ours from our entertainment center. Growing up, my mom always used clothes pins to hang them from the curtains.

We have done this too. We also have hung the stockings from the top of the doorway when we had a double wide doorway. It worked out well because they were over the heads of most of our friends, and the dogs didn't mess with them either. We stopped that when we got a fireplace though.

When I was growing up, we didn't have a fireplace either, so we hung them from the upper hinges on double French doors.

When I was in an apratment I got over the door wreath hangers and hung them on several interior doors.

We always did the same thing growing up. Bows, ribbons, holly...Mom mixed up how she tied them up, but she always had them hanging there all xmas season and they looked great.

If you're worried about the pub mirror taking up too much space, you could get a row of hooks or knobs without the mirror.

I like these individual knobs from Pier 1 too:

We also used to hang them from the staricase when I was a kid, and before that, when we lived in a house without a bannister (no stairs), we used stocking hangers lined up on a bookshelf.

We do not have a fireplace and when we had an entertainment center I used stocking hangers and hung them from the book case. Then we got rid of the book case/entertainment center and last year I pulled back one side of my curtain and layed fresh fir leaves and placed my stocking hangers on the window casing.

My mom uses a free standing stocking holder that holds 12 stockings. I think she got it from Kirklands.

I doubt if LTD ever runs free shipping specials. However, keep your eyes out because I think this type of thing is available at a few places. I checked Lakeside Collection (LTD's sister site) and didn't see anything like that listed which is a bummer.

We did have a fireplace, yet we had ours on the banister each year. Maybe the fireplace didn't have a mantel...I can't remember. Then in another house, they were placed on a short wall near the front entrance. (That house only had a woodstove).
