Handheld GPS ???

I am looking to purchase a handheld GPS. Any advice on which one is best to purchase? I have a Garmin for the car that I purchased in November 2008 (the day after Thanksgiving), it has not worked since February of this year. We rarely used it. It say's I need to purchase a new updated map. How long should these things last before having to purchase new maps? So if I need a new one I am thinking about a handheld. Any help or thoughts would be greatly appreaciated.

You might be able to save yourself a headache and some $$$ by getting a cell phone with a GPS. My Blackberry has it and I always have it with me...so convenient.
