Halloween: Taking a year off?

It is not a rarity. Here is an article. http://www.today.com/id/39832592/ns...ies-ban-teens-trick-or-treating/#.UkLNf-e9KSM

Really, that is the stupidest law you have heard of? It specifically addresses the top complaint of the people in this thread, so there are probably people who would be glad if they had a similar law in their town or city. If you want to see some real stupid laws there is a website called stupid laws.com.

I say in all seriousness that it is the stupidest 21st century law I have ever heard of. (Obviously, something like the 3/5ths compromise is stupider.) Even stupider than telling people what color they can paint their mailboxes.

Also, I checked out that stupid laws site. Tons of them have been debunked by Snopes, either for having been abolished centuries ago or for never having existed in the first place.

I agree- that is nuts. Do the kids have to carry their birth certificates with them and show them to each house? I never heard of "rules"for trick or treating. I was amazed that some places had actual set trick or treating times never less age limits!

Last year, our city announced the times for Trick n Treat way back in February because so many people were calling in asking, so they could set their schedules.

I think it's great that cities make rules like that. There is a difference between dressing up for Halloween and having fun versus trick or treating. It IS for the little ones. The older kids can other places to get their fair share of candy. My kids will not be trick or treating past 5-6th grade.

Our town has an age limit for tot. 12 and under can tot. Do no other areas have age limits?

I'm not a fan of the law. I mean, I think that while Halloween is for everyone, there are certain activities that are more appropriate for certain ages. Trick-or-treating is one of them. I think trick-or-treating is for children. That said, when I hand out candy, I would never consider not giving candy out to a person whom I personally believed was too old to trick-or-treat. That would just be cruel. I am also very much opposed to this law. Talk about government overstepping. Who are the teens hurting? No one. How does this law better society? It doesn't. Therefore, I believe that the government could be better serve the people by actually working on things that benefit society rather than focusing on restricting teens trick-or-treating.

Halloween in our neighborhood is awesome. The first Halloween in our house was the night I realized we absolutely made the right decision to buy in our neighborhood. People drive their kids to our neighborhood and our typical empty one way street is lined with cars but everyone is very careful and very respectful. We live in the historical district so all the houses are 100-200 years old and it does kind of look creepy at night and everyone does a great job of decorating. We all sit in our front yards with fire pits and some houses hand out hot chocolate for the kids and "adult" hot chocolate for the parents. But if it's not fun anymore I see no harm in participating. It should be fun and there isn't a rule that says you have to participate.

I am of the opinion that after about 15 or 16, you are too old for trick or treating, go buy your own candy.

How is my 15 year old going to afford candy? He doesn't work, because school is his work. Is he supposed to steal it, because he doesn't do that either...He does have 7 other siblings who go trick or treating with him
because my ex will bring all the kids so they can have fun together

He will however, be dressed as Ganon from Legend of Zelda because his 5 year old brother wants to be Link so HIS 15 year old brother can have a costume that I said no to as no one would get it unless Link was present. Both Z and A are stoked.

Last year at 14, he was Arthur Dent from "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" complete with robe, towel, and homemade guide. He got tons of complements from adults on his costume and lots of thumbs thrown in the air!!

Listen, I don't think kids are inherently evil. Give them the candy or not at your house....but around here we like happy people who want to be part of their community, not cut them off from a community event because we think they are to old.

In addition, I think the bans of ages is wrong as long as everyone is being respectful. How are you even going to know how old some of the kids are? Our niece has been taller then me since she was 10 and by age 12 she was 5'6" so she definitely looks a lot older then she is. I would have felt terrible if she wouldn't have been able to participate with her friends because people thought she was "too old".

OK seriously, my 16 year old doesn't work, but somehow he has money. He gets a little here and there, certainly enough to buy candy. ANd if you kids are taking around younger siblings, then great. It is also great if your kids get a thumbs up, but in my world, i really don't care. Wast of time and money in my book. YOur opinion is different. Again, I hate Halloween, always have always will. I got enough candy growing up without having to dress up in a silly costume and ask for it.

I don't care about halloween, I give candy to big kids and small kids, they don't get any lip from me. I hate Halloween and therefore will not be participating now that my kids are older. Enough said.

I hand out candy to teens! :thumbsup2

I think its all in good fun and heck I'll even give candy out to adults!

It's funny how so many people focus on the candy. For us, Halloween is the experience. The planning of costumes for weeks in advance, and the dressing up with friends in coordinating outfits. The neighborhood fellowship with others, the time spent chatting and visiting with friends.

Heck, my kids can go to Walmart the day after Halloween and score lots of cheap candy, but that doesn't mean that Halloween is not one of their (and my) favorite nights.

Teens are still children, except in the eyes of Disney. Why the hate?

I think that some people are just miserable and miserly.

I know, right?

I'm sure that if there was a post saying kids over 12 shouldn't wear mouse ears people would be falling all over themselves to say that teenagers are still children, that we shouldn't rush them to grow up, that it's a fun activity regardless of age ...

Same!!

There are some really grinchy people on this thread. :headache:

Grinchy is for Christmas and I LOVE Christmas. I don't care old trick or treaters are. I hate halloween. Total waste of money for me. NO other holiday do you go knocking on doors and asking for candy. I have no use for that. I am nice when I hand out the candy and you would never know that I hate the holiday, but inside I always swear that this is the last year, and last year was the last year.

Most of you love it, great, but those of us who don't are Grinchy, we just have different opinions.

Oh no, it's very possible to grinchy all year long.

I love Halloween but haven't given out candy myself. I asked my friend and neighbor this year how many trick or treaters to expect and she said "I turn off my light and drink" - :lmao:

You ever think about how different Halloween and Christmas are? I mean, one holiday is supposed to be all about the spirit of giving. The other holiday features people going door-to-door asking for goodies. One holiday, people are known for dressing nicely. The other holiday is about dressing as crazy as possible. Of course, both holidays are days you usually end up gorging yourself on junk food... and have special movies dedicated to the mood of that specific holiday. :lmao:

Fun that you can have two completely different holidays and so many people can still love both. And if you aren't a fan of one or the other, more power to you. :thumbsup2

No, on other holidays you hang a stocking and expect some old, fat stalker who watches you while you sleep to put presents in it. Or you leave out a big basket and expect a giant rabbit to deliver your candy. That's why those holidays aren't called Halloween. :lmao:

It's all a waste of money, so just skip the holidays altogether.

I am spending my money on my family. OH and we don't do the Easter bunny either, and really not too many gifts on Christmas, but lots of food for MY family and MY friends, you know, the people that I care about and they aren't knocking on my door and asking for it.

Let it go people, I don't like Halloween, I accept that a lot of people do, allow me the same courtesy.

OH and I am not spending my money on crappy costumes for the kids to only wear once.
