Halloween: Taking a year off?

No, on other holidays you hang a stocking and expect some old, fat stalker who watches you while you sleep to put presents in it. Or you leave out a big basket and expect a giant rabbit to deliver your candy. That's why those holidays aren't called Halloween. :lmao: It's all a waste of money, so just skip the holidays altogether.
Those holidays also can be religious thing too. It includes NO easter basket or Santa. Kudos to you for celebrating and acknowledging Halloween. Can't the PP do the same as well if she chooses not to celebrate Halloween? Bullying isn't required here. Take a deep breath.

It's fine that some people don't like Halloween... But why are they so angry about it?

Stop trivialising bullying by calling someone who didn't disagree with you a bully! You're being over dramatic.

Charlie Brown flashbacks? ;)

I love Halloween and I usually would give candy out to kids, teens and even give some parents. My only annoyance is if a teenager comes to the door without a costume and just lifts the bag. Unfortunately we don't get that many kids here so even if I buy a bag or two, chances are I will still have that bag the next day (not complaining because..hey it's candy.)

I know, right? I'm sure that if there was a post saying kids over 12 shouldn't wear mouse ears people would be falling all over themselves to say that teenagers are still children, that we shouldn't rush them to grow up, that it's a fun activity regardless of age ...

Totally agree!

My 15yo will be trick or treating this year as soon as he comes home from his football game and catches up with his friends. We get a mix of older kids and younger kids in our neighborhood. They all dress up and they all say trick or treat and thank you. Shoot I'd still dress up and go trick or treating if I could. I love Halloween! I have tons of decorations. We give out big candy bars and I usually make some kind of "adult" drink for the parents walking around too.

My neighbors have a huge party usually the Saturday before Halloween . we all dress up and have a blast!!!

I dont get people on here. Its ok for middle schoolers to ride in strollers in WDW but not to trick or treat? Ummm ok!

Don't forget it's also apparently OK for the middle school boys to use the ladies room with mom. ;)

OK people, let's chill out a little.

Some people don't like Halloween. Some people (myself included) love it! But it all comes down to individual choice. The poster who doesn't like it has stated her reasons, and there is no reason to get all critical and nasty and cast aspersions upon her person!!

The shoe has been on the other foot; some years ago, I was criticized and yelled at on these boards because my family and I celebrate Christmas and Easter in purely secular ways. Basically I was told that if I didn't have the decency to celebrate them in a Christian manner, I shouldn't bother celebrating at all.

Guess what folks, it is still a free country. Last I checked there were no mandated holidays, and no required ways to celebrate. You don't want to observe, don't observe! Personal choice is a wonderful thing.

The poster has made her choices and reason therefor very clear. I suggest we all calm down a little and respect her right to choose. It isn't as if she is running around yelling about how WE have to celebrate Halloween - just stating her own viewpoint.

OK, off to watch The Great Pumpkin.

My senior year of high school, when Valentines Day rolled around, I found myself without a boyfriend. Now, my freshman and sophomore year I hadn't had one either, but neither had the majority of girls in my group of friends. We usually just ended up hanging out together, ordering pizza, and watching silly movies. But my senior year, they had all partnered up and I found myself single due to my boyfriend and I calling it quits a whole 10 days prior to the holiday.

So, anyway, I decided that since I didn't have a guy to do anything with and all of my friends were going to be out with their significant others, why not celebrate Valentines Day my own way! So I went and bought some scented candles, some bath salts and bubble bath, and various goodies. I made myself chocolate covered strawberries. I drank a cherry coke in a wine glass while I had a bubble bath. Then I read my Bible. I said I was focusing on the love I had for myself and the love God had for me. My friends told me I was nuts. Nuts to them, I said! Who were they to tell me how to celebrate a holiday?

I am of the opinion that after about 15 or 16, you are too old for trick or treating, go buy your own candy.

Halloween is a holiday like any other holiday. Anyone, any age can and should enjoy it. In my world there is no limit to how old you are to trick or treat. It's all about the fun of it and it's not just for the little ones.

I am glad you love it, I am glad that around your area people get into it more than Christmas ( very sad IMHO)

OH and why is it either or, Kids around here don't have to get candy in order to stay out of trouble. So I guess where most of you are, kids who trick or treat are boozing it up? Sad. YOu don't have to do either. Oh and I bet plenty of them booze it up before or after if they are that type of kid, the candy has nothing to do with it.

What does booze have to do with Halloween? I don't believe i have ever seen a 9 year old " boozing" it up trick or treating from house to house. Foodies love candy too btw.::yes::

And about Christmas, i am sorry but i guess i am one of those people that love Halloween more the Christmas :confused3 ::yes::

the point is that no matter what age you are: 17 or 19 or 20 or 35 if you want to trick or treat and partake in the fun times of it all so be it! It's a matter of preference.

Halloween is my favorite holiday but I don't like Trick or Treating so where does that leave me? ;)

I love haunted houses and spooky things and the decorations. The candy isn't bad either.

But to each their own! What is the point of arguing with someone who doesn't like something?

Hold the phone. When you say that the candy isn't bad, you are excluding those candies in the black and orange wrappers, right? ;)

Read your last line and apply that to me. I am so tired of explaining my reasons, not that I have to. I have stated repeatedly that I know others enjoy it and that is fine. I do not.

As far as the "boozing it up" I suggest you read the entire thread and you will see what I am talking about, I am in no way saying that little kids do this. God Talk about beating my head up against a brick wall.

Oh and THANK YOU Sorsha, I assume you were talking about me, and yes I don't care if other people enjoy it, most of my really good friends do, but I do not. Everyone enjoys different things.

OH and I do LOVE Charlie Brown Great Pumpkin. Always have, always will.

YOu know, in all these years I never thought of it like that. It is actually the trick or treating that I hate.

I love all the crazy paranormal stuff that comes on TV, all the 50 scariest places in the US type stuff, but I hate the trick or treating. The constant door bell, the dog going hysterical, the ugly costumes. Yep that about sums it up for me. I would be quite happy with dinner out a big bowl of chocolate, Charlie Brown and then some haunted castle or light house thing. Maybe a trip to St Augustine for a ghost tour, but I just cannot get into that trick or treating stuff.

OH and could people please leave all those poor black cats alone. God help those poor creatures at Halloween.

I may hate Halloween, but I am not mean. I have given candy out and gushed over kids and their costumes for many years. Do you really think I open the door and scowl at kids? NO. I will be gone from my house until it is over.

And as far as the teen thing goes, multiple posters have stated than they would rather teens be out trick or treating than boozing it up or doing mean pranks. It was their "either or", not mine.

Where in my post did I say you opened the door and scowled at anyone? lol I never said that, I also said I wasn't going to try to change your mind and I was not being rude to you at all. In fact the main reason I quoted you was because I thought you were confused by something you said (quoted from the post I originally quoted) "OH and why is it either or, Kids around here don't have to get candy in order to stay out of trouble. So I guess where most of you are, kids who trick or treat are boozing it up? Sad. YOu don't have to do either. You say kids who ToT ARE boozing it up, but the majority of people were saying things like "at least kids who are out ToT'ing AREN'T out boozing it up, I was looking for clarification, I guess I was too vague in my response. It wasn't an "either or" in your response, it's kids that are ToT'ing ARE boozing it up, I'm not the only who read it that way either. If I still misunderstand please let me know.

why does everybody hate on the teens. I mean I was one too. If I don't give the candy to someone I will end up eating it! If the teens complain about your tootsie pops, then give out apples or something different. There is no rule you have to give out candy...Heck you could give out cheap little dollar store toys or toothbrushes. Condoms would be a good idea for teens too!

LOL Please don't give out apples or condoms, I won't let my kids keep either one. LOL :)

Our town has an age limit for tot. 12 and under can tot. Do no other areas have age limits?

Absolutely not and if they did I would throw a party for all my kids friends (we normally do a party anyway and the kids invite their friends) lol

It's funny how so many people focus on the candy. For us, Halloween is the experience. The planning of costumes for weeks in advance, and the dressing up with friends in coordinating outfits. The neighborhood fellowship with others, the time spent chatting and visiting with friends.

Heck, my kids can go to Walmart the day after Halloween and score lots of cheap candy, but that doesn't mean that Halloween is not one of their (and my) favorite nights.

YES!!!! This, exactly!! It's the experience, it isn't about candy, it's about the fun in the holiday. lol Dressing up, planning costumes, throwing a party, etc etc. :)

OH and I do LOVE Charlie Brown Great Pumpkin. Always have, always will.

I love It's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown, and the Garfield Halloween special as well, we always watch those cartoons together sometime before Halloween. Sometimes as we are working on costumes. :) You aren't beating your head against a brick wall, please see my post above regarding the drinking and ToT'ing. :)

I never said that kids have to do either or, other posters have said that if kids are trick or treating that they aren't boozing it up. (defending teens trick or treating by saying this) I don't think it is an either or, some other posters have implied that with what they have stated. I don't think a kid has to do either and I would hope that no matter what they are doing, they aren't at home boozing it up, I know some are, but none that I know of.

My opinion is that once you're old enough to legally work, you're too old to trick or treat. Go buy your candy with the money you earn.

If a parent ever came to my door to "have a word with me" about what kind of Halloween candy I gave, they be "having a word" with the police as they got arrested for trespassing. Parents like that explain why many children are the way they are these days.

OP, if its not fun for you any more, then don't do it. Leave the porch light off, disable the doorbell and read a book.

Well if you ever find yourself in Texas for Halloween, feel free to come celebrate with me. That's the exact sort of stuff I like about the holiday. I'll do the downtown festival, grab some dinner, and then watch Charlie Brown. Then, the kiddo goes to bed and I will watch something creepy on television like about the Manson Murders or a Celebrity Ghost Stories marathon. :thumbsup2

You know, I think the PP is actually the only one who brought up "boozing it up". I'm the one who initially said I enjoyed having teens at my door on Halloween, but added that I'd rather have them doing that than out getting into trouble. Maybe I should have added this....... ;)

Now, here's the funny part. "Boozing it up" never even crossed my mind. All I really meant is that they might be out toilet papering someone's house. :rotfl: I actually think higher of the teens we know than to assume "boozing it up" is the only alternative to trick or treating they could come up with on Halloween.

It was more of a reference to the fact that the tradition is "TRICK" or "TREAT". And if they don't get a treat they might indeed follow through on a trick.

And for the record, my yard has been TP'd, forked and flocked. And I usually go out and take pictures after a good laugh...... before waking my own teens to clean it up...... since it's usually their friends who did it.
