I was coming back from Seattle by way of Dulles. I ended up on a small 12 -15 seater for the flight up to Newark. It was raining and started to get foggy the closer to EWR we got. Normally when you are flying south to north into EWR you can see the NJ Turnpike. Not this trip. We were in the soup so to speak. On top of that the plane was bouncing. The Capt. made one attempt to land but pulled back up due to another plane crossing the runway. When we did land, the plane slid towards one side with the wing almost hitting the runway. I was knocked into the window when we touched down. They ended up having EMS meeting the plane at the gate. Luckly no one was hurt. This was the only time I have ever been afraid flying.

Most of my other adventure have been extreme delays, cancellations, redirects to cities I really didn't want to go to and rather strange seatmates. Yes, I've had my share of drunks, BO and obnoxious idots sit next to me. I've sat next to people who prayed the Rosary an entire flight from EWR from to SFO. I've sat next to couple who made-out for the entire flight. I sat next a woman who wore PJ's on a red-eye back to ERW. I've sat next to people who I wonder how they find their way to the bathroom in the morning. I've been on airlines that I will never fly on again if my life depended on it (US- maybe-I'll-get-there-Air). And others that I hope are around for awhile (JetBlue).

My two favorite of all time are, first, the couple who were about to change their kid's diaper right there in their seats on the tray tables while we were all buckled in. Needless to say, I made it known I was not going to be a witness to a crappy diaper.

My other favorite were the couple who packed a picnic lunch. Yes, lunch complete in the coleman cooler. So what's wrong with this, you ask? The man was in the aisle seat, the woman in the window s eat and yours truely in the middle. I asked if one of them wanted to switch seats. Both said no. Now, I am working on report that needed to be complete when I got to where I was going. They started passing food back and forth. Needless to say when the pickle dropped in the middle of my report, I lost it. The Flight Attendent asked that they either change seats with me or put the food away. They said no to both. A few minutes later they moved me to First Class.

Yes, I love flying! :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

WOw!???

You certain HAVE had some amazing encounters on flights. I must be fortunate as I can't recall ANY really really bad experiences... and as I commented earlier ~ I flew about 50% of the year for a little over a decade. I had at one point a little over a half million FF miles on balance with just United plus a minor accumulation of flight credit with Sounthwest and AA. So, I've been around the block a bit with most of it domestic.

Aside from that ~ I will share that my spouse and I DID bring a meal on board once that drew minor comments from the flilght attendants and a fellow who was in our row. My spouse and I were seated together on a triple and our meals were a couple of lobsters I brought on. It was one of those long flights in the evening after United discontinued meal service AND they had no meals for purchase. The fellow next to us was very polite and we did offer to share a bit... and he declined politely. And of course, the stewardresses came by to gawk. I don't think we made any serious mess in spite of the snapping shells and such. We were really hungry and leaving Boston we picked up a nice meal to go... so whats' wrong with that?

The folks you had who hogged up the asile and window and refused to move or discontinue sound like they were extrememly inconsiderate - to say the least. And the other instances of odd run ins seem improbable. Most of the time when I've flown United I get the section set aside for frequent flyers - and the frequent flyers tend to be cordial business sorts who seem to maintain a minimum civil standard of conduct. I usually pursue small talk with diplomatic constaint - as I usually have something I want to get to (work or productive reading) while in flight anyway. Since our kids came along we;ve tried to maintain reasonable standards of conduct with them too.

Anyways.... I think I speak for all of us DIS folks when I say we're glad no serious harm came of the wild landing in the past.

And TERRI... where are the pictures? I'll put up Tshirt designs for your travel photos! Yeah... I know... I said I would have had them up 2 or 3 days ago but I've been side tracked (as usual) and I need an excuse to buy me another day or so. Everybody wants something around here ... at home ... at work ... the kids ... and now the DIS.... LOL! I guess it's better to be busy then not, eh? I had to make a special run to pick up my daughter from P-school today ... she tossed her cookies. SO on pickig her up she looks sterling... and she explained that she ran and played a little too hard right after lunch... that's why the cookies flew.... but school policy calls for a trip home if any child throws up. That's probably a good defensive policy - I guess. :confused3

TTFN!

Crush - The funny part of the "coleman couple" was that this was on a flight from Charlotte NC to Philly. A flight lasts an hour and half at the most. From what I knew, they had food in Philly!

My favorite people to sit next to are kids traveling by themselves. They start out very quiet, then turn into little chatter boxes. Nothing like a couple of games of Go Fish or Uno to make a flight go by.

I will add that most of my adventures were pre-9/11 and TSA. While I don't travel as much as I use to, I just don't see the same things happening that often antmore. While I'm glad I'm not a road warrior any more, it made for some very interesting experiences and a side of life I never knew existed.

Kathy,

Since my kids came along post 9-11 my travel has been cut by 95% or more. In fact, my spouse and I have taken a whole new perspective on life priorities with the arrival of our kids. I reflect with whimsy on the days just after 9-11 when our oldest was a few months old. We had a nanny and I recall walking through the airport right after 9-11 and it was a total ghost town at LAX. Out the windows of the airport there used to be row upon row of jumbo jets with more jets moving in the distance AND people moving around like ants. At that time (post 9-11) there were maybe a dozen people at most as passengers the WHOLE TIME I was walking through the communter terminals. Plus the jet ways had only a few of these tiny commuter jets and maybe one of two medium jets parked. There were more crew on some of my flights then passengers! And I kept thinking what in the world am I doing traveling to work when all of my competition was staying home? Plus I had a new baby I was missing? So I shifted my work style to near zero travel and never unshifted from it. I know my competition travels again. I know working mostly phones is NOT as effective as flying out in person but I don't really care anymore with the kids. In a hand span of years some folks warn the honey-moon will draw to a close with the kids.... and I don't want to miss that honeymoon experience with the children. I can always rebuild later if we really need to or if I get bored.

Also... I tend to think my spouse and I tend to be severely happy go lucky sorts - and we don't micro-manage most things to the last detail - as such since we are OK juggling things as they are we continue along our merry way. So... the point???? We don't miss the business travel a stitch (so far). I'm sitting here watching my older daughter (5) with hands in chin and elbows propping her up so she can watch TV (I kno... that's not too good of a thing too) but she looks so cute. The younger one is trying on her big sisters' outfits now. These days and this moment are really one of a kind.

One travel side note I'll share.... my oldest daughter is named after a nice young lady I met on a long haul flight. My spouse nags that it must have been some young lady to have left me with that sort of impression.... (and the look she gives me raises a chill in me, as it should  ). It actually was a case of me ignoring this attractive youngish lady on my flight home from Chicago. About half way home she struck up a conversation with me (not I engaging her). And it turns out she was on the flight into LA to take a new job in advertising sales. Figures, eh?. So she asked a sorts of engaging questions and since I used to manage and train sales types I was sort of evaluating her table manners and query techniques. At the end as the flight was taxiing to park she offerred her name since I never asked her or offerred my name. It was That sort of conversation. And I thought... Julianna... I had not recently heard that name before and it seemed kind of nice. Suitable if one wanted to be referred to as Julie, Anna or Julianna. I liked the ring of it and when our oldest was born I named her after the girl I met on the flight. I get subtle nasty glances from my spouse every time I share that story in public. LOL! :rolleyes1

She got to name the 2nd daughter without any commentary from me. :thumbsup2

buckifan- Thanks for the warm welcome back. My Sister and her Husband and Kids went with us to Myrtle Beach for a mini Spring Break, they live about 15 minutes from me.

Kristin and CaptainCrash- I will post my picture's soon. I am still doing laundry and catching up from being away for 3 1/2 day's. Captain hopr your Daughter is feeling better.

Teri

Thanx Terri for the well wishes....

... it looks so far as if she was just running too hard after eating lunch. SO the cookies were not due to illness. SHe's bouncing on the bed right now all grins. I gotta run to the airport now... got relatives coming in from Hawaii and they're staying with us off and on the next week an' a half... so I'll not be on as much. SO there will be a lot more thread real estate for everyone else without my long posts.

Gotta run.... :thumbsup2

I made the decision to stop trying to please others.

..... Thank goodness reality set in, I made the decision to stop trying to please others. .....

Capt. I think that if my DH came home and told me he met a lady on a plane and wanted to name our DD after her I'd be giving him more than "subtle nasty glances". My DD would have gone nameless before that would happen. Your wife is a good sport.

Hey another great day here, I off. DD and I have lots to do today, cause it's back to work for me Friday and Saturday. .... :wave2:

Ginger....

So... my guests from Hawaii are sound asleep here as 9AM for us is 6AM for them. So I have a couple of minutes to tap a few keys off.

Actually - if you think about it almost everybody is named after, or rather... as someone else has been named. With 6 billion souls on the planet there are probably 1 million or more "Toms", "Janes" and a 150 "Crorksters" and "Fluffies". Yeah... some poor nut is named "Fluffy" out there.

So, my obtaining the name I choose is not really intended to be anything beyond a simple naming. Nothing more was involved than I heard the name as someone introduced herself on parting from a flight. I can't even remember what she looked like... and my wife knows I'm terrible with LAST names but good with first names. Odd but true. So I get a playful lightening bolt glance and no severe pokes to the ribs. The physical assaults are reserved for especially naughty moments. We've been together 22+ years and we THINK we understand one another... to the point of sort of knowing what one antoher is thinking, up to and doing much of the time. Heck, my spouse knows what I'm talking about to the neighbors while she's across the street (once she called out from across the street to tell me something while I chatted with the neighbor, Andy, and she seemed as if she had heard us. My neighbor remarked that her knowledge of what I had spoken of was "Spoky").

At any rate, I would agree.... yes - my spouse IS a good sport for putting up with me (sometimes). She does dental work without novacane because she has an aversion to the stuff and a high tolerance for pain. Some folks think that's how she tolerates being married with me. LOL! Actually I think I am far less of a pain then any dentist has been. Although if you corner her and enquire I'm sure she might quip otherwise - with a smirk.

So... I feel little guilt or vulnerability at (allow me to rephrase the story for the sake of diplomacy) obtining the idea for a name from SOMEONE I met on a flight. Ya kno... I deliberately fanned the drama by saying the young lady was attractive (she was - mildly so - OK, she was sort of cute... ). BUT, the rest of the description was quite accurate... I practiced ignoring her as I had lots of other things on my mind and was reading other stuff and so on. There was NO conversation prior to half way through the flight and this young lady would not quiet down. It must have been troublesome to her that I would not talk to her initially is how I felt. It was like she expected me to pursue conversation and I did not. <does it seem as if my story is causing more trouble for me and my thin reputation?>. It's not like I bought her drinks and work with her regularly or something like that. We were on a flight for a couple of hours - thats all?

I just don't get it... except I notice many are mildly entertained by the story. It IS true. If you had known me 22 years than you would understand... or you might not... dpending on your POV I guess. :confused3

Also... I might add that for almost a week after birth our daughter DID GO NAMELESS. You see, she sort of was born early by about 3.5 weeks from her due date. Technically she was 2 days "premature" but it sort of was not like that in reality. So, we were counting on her not arriving until maybe 1 or 2 weeks at the most before her due date. We had not considered the possibility of having her 3+ weeks early. So we had not settled on a name yet. Nor had we completed preparing a baby room or reading all our Parenting books yet. We had both been working up until that day the birth occurred. In fact, my spouse's baby shower was on the day BEFORE our daughter was born! That day she was born was actually the 1st day of maternity leave scheduled. So my spouse laments she never had the benefit of any actual maternity leave BEFORE the birth.

So yeah... we were in the hospital right after birth without our baby name books... so we were on-line from the hospital room looking at baby names for 5 or 6 days trying to settle on a name. Although my spouse was checked out as a normal recovery in a few days our daughter stayed in a couple extra days because of a baby jaundice thing. In retrospect I think of it as a sun tanning thing with the ultra-violet "billy reuben" lights. That part was not too bad excpet for the constant blood draws they kept taking from her tiny feet. THAT... I did not like.

At any rate... there's the long reply on the baby naming thing. And to this day I love her name but con't remember what that girl looked like from the United flight. :confused3

HI All,
Just checking in...With the warm weather finally here...I am hardly inside so in turn have very little time on the computer.....The kids only want to be outside....We just got a trampoline... so we all have been on that a ton....

I am totally beat every night from jumping on it.....

What is everyone planning on doing for Easter....

I have to admit...I briefly ( am I mean BRIEF) contemplated cancelling our cruise well rescheduling it....My old school where I taught first grade for five years before the twins has a part time kindergarten for next school year..My principal wanted to offer it to me first.....But with this two week vacation and all they would never give me the time off...But most importantly Dh does not want me to return to work for some time....God love him...He wants me home with the kids....See you would have all been having fun without me...!!!!

OK so lets see what is everyones plans for easter???

K...

Having twins is a rare blessing... and I've heard twins can amount to triple the work sometimes too. So - please hold steady and join us on the voyage - and the K-school stuff can come later if the itch gets ya to try your hand at that again!

As for Easter... we were gonna duck in on an Easter service tomorrow (I'm not clear precisely when sice my spouse decides the schedule in these matters). Then Saturday we're attending a church sponsored easter egg hunt and pot luck function. Sunday has a fairly routine Easter service. I need to reconfirm the schedule as they have a special schedule running.

Aside from that ... we are also entertaining the relatives from Hawaii - towing them around to shop and do Disneyland later this week.

I'm wacked from entertaining already!

Oh the twins are such a blessing.....I do not mind hte work...Like I said it was a brief moment and I mean brief that I thought about returning to the work force.....I will be on the cruise with bells on....heck we need to keep our little dis boards group going...RIGHT????

Oh have fun entertaining that can be so exhausting..!!!
Well for Easter we we will be just the four of us for a change and boy it will be nice and calm....LIke that!!!!

This is the way we are. We are either not home or we are outside.

Easter will be a nice quite day by the pool with grilled steak for dinner, unless Fran knows something I do not ( which would not surprise me since we have hardly seen each other this week)

Happy Easter to everyone!

Kristen....6 weeks from today we will be at the port. :cool1: :cool1: :cool1: We cannot wait. It is the 1st cruise that we really have nothing planned. The only thing we did reserve was the parasailing on our 1st Castaway Cay day. We are just flying by the seat of our pants for the rest of the week.

Hello to all! Sorry I have not posted in a while. This time of year is always so busy for us! Timmy is on a fishing trip in WV with my Father. This will be his first Easter away from us. :sad2:
Yesterday , I took Jacob to the beach and the outlets ( My 1st day off since New Years day!). I spent way too much money at the Disney outlet, but got a lot of cute stuff for the cruise! It was a nice day. However, it was a little windy on the beach. Jacob did not seem to mind, he loves playing in the sand!
Today we are taking Jacob to see The Wild. It looks like a cute movie! Then we are going to get some yard work done around the house.

Hope everyone has a great Easter!
