Hall and Oates...what exactly does Oates do?

Just heard their new song, a remake of "I'll be there". The DJ anounced the new song by Hall and Oates, and all I heard was Hall singing, which led me to wonder....what exactly does "Oates" bring to the table?

I saw them live once, and he plays guitar and jumps around quite a bit. But Hall is the talent in that duo. Man, we he sang "Me and Mrs. Jones", I thought I might faint dead away. Woo!
