Half way through the kitchen painting UPDATE page 3

Are you putting latex over oil or something? Often kitchens have oil base paint. I think it will look good with wood floors and new counter tops. I HATE painting! Good luck.

thanks all :)

I think I will go back to my original plan and paint the cabinets a parchment colour with a coffee glaze. I had an interior designer out and she convinced me to try the whitewash but I really didnt like the way it came out, obviously.

Trust me, you wouldnt have liked THAT red. It wasnt a good kitchen red at all and the paint wasnt good. Besides with the blue cabinets t was very dark and just didnt go with it

I used Kitchen and Bath paint on it and did everything I was supposed to do, Its really bad paint underneath what I put on. NOTHING adheres to it without a couple of layers.

back to the drawing board!

In order to have white, you really have to have a "Cape Cod" theme going on.
I think you will be happier with a different color.
However, I am a "earth tones" person.

In fact I love your choices for the hardware, appliances, and countertop.:thumbsup2

ok to help with this decision, this is the connected eating area.

I think that is a good idea ~~ paint the cabinets a parchment color with the coffee glaze. That white isn't working. Your choice of countertops and hardware will look beautiful against parchment.

Painting can be so frustrating!

Parchment with a coffee glaze sounds great! :thumbsup2

I think the main bump for me in the color combo you used was the fact that the wall color was pale enough to still be in the white family but a warm white, and the white you used to whitewash the cabinets was very cool. It is extremely tricky to match a warm and a cool color side by side without it looking off, especially when the colors are in the same family (both shades of white)

Can't wait to see a picture of the glazing, sounds interesting!

see what happens when I let a proffesional change my mind? LOL JK she was wonderful but I do think the parchment would look better. Well off to Lowes I go!

I'm a big fan of earth tones - and with the new wood floors and the counter tops, I think that would look good. Especially with the seating area next to it!

BTW -- I have the exact same clock in my kitchen, as well as the two things under it. But they belonged to the previous owner, didn't they???

anything with the light yellow is mine :)

Thats the "after" photos. The red stuff was hers.

Like my new toaster? LOL I found it at Liquidation World for $5.99 I was so happy! :)

Another vote for color, here. I actually liked the red!

In order to have such neutral colors, you need something to "pop", or it'll be too bland. I let my countertops and my window treatments be the bling in my kitchen, but I kept everything else neutral.

By the way, I did my kitchen, including the cabinets, myself - it's a lot of work!

Well first part is done. I have the Parchment colour on the cabinets and tomorrow I will put the glaze on. Im really happy with the colour now, its so much warmer and yes more colourful ;)

I will show you all when I get more done :)

Honest opinion - I think it looks like the cabinets aren't finished. I don't really like the white-wash look, not just on your cabinets but on anything. I love the beadboard look and think they would look awesome with simple white paint, and brushed nickel knobs. I also like the red paint before. Maybe I'm partial, because my last house had stark white cabinets with red walls, and I got so many compliments on it. I would just do a richer red. If you don't like red, a buttercream yellow would look geat too!

ok this is what the new cabinet colour looks like,

its so hard to tell from those pictures but the walls area a creamy yellow colour. This is kind of a better picture of the wall colour

Its hard to take a decent shot in there because the fllourescent lights are so bad. They are going soon thankfully but for now its what Im stuck with

So I have winter wheat ( the creamy yellow) on the walls in the kitchen, golden mustard in the banquette area and now I have "brandied pears" on the cabinets, good thing its a kitchen! LOL

I have the white cabinets with brass knobs & the same taupe colored paint (like the second photo) on my kitchen walls & Giallo Ornamental granite (which resembles Cookies n' Cream ice cream!) The white cabinets offset the counters & my counters compliment my cabinets & wall color. It all works.

LOVE the above posted photos! I'd love a tour through Am_I_there_yet's house!! Saw the "french" style bathroom photo's last time too & they were awesome!! :thumbsup2

Binny, I think you're doing such a great job! That is a whole lot of work you're getting into. Your ideas sound great, I'm anxious to see the parchment/coffee idea you mentioned. (Heck, anything with "coffee" gets my attention!) :lmao: But if you decide to keep the cabinets white, I think it would work very well with your new counters & hardware. (Love the counter you chose too!) Was that Sahara? Can't remember the name but we almost picked that one & then we ended up ordering granite afterall!

Hi neighbor! :wave2:
I think you are doing a great job. I can't wait to see what it looks like when it is done!

My cabinets were supposed to be glazed, but I chickened out. I think glaze is an awesome look and I think it'll really warm up your cabinets! :thumbsup2

Can't wait to see the end results!

Trust me, it's not all good. I have yet to tackle my master bathroom. I just stand there and stare at it, not sure which way to turn first! :sad2:

well here I go to start the glaze part

Thanks for the ideas!

The countertops are the Corian sandstone.

So any hints for working with the glaze? I think I just want to do a wash effct obviously not spnging or anything I think Im just going to use a rag and put it on that way, maybe a brush? ideas?

Work quickly? :artist:

On the sample door I had, I brushed it on and ragged it off. I basically wanted it to stay in the crevices of the doors, but nowhere else. With your beadboard doors, it seems that's the only way you'll be able to get the glaze into those areas.

My cabinets, although they look white in the pics, are also a parchment color and the glaze I was going to use, was called mocha. Seems we had the same idea!

Well Im finished! Well almost finished, as in everything but the trim and the hardware is done. But the cabinet faces are done which makes me really happy!

I went through a lot of ideas today with that glaze. I wasnt totally sold of any of them until I started wiping it off. THEN I found what I was looking for. I had to let it sit and soak in for a while and then wipe off the excess.

I dont think these are great pictures because of that stupid light in there but you can at least get an idea. This is exactly the look I was hoping for. Its kind of says " Im older than rock" LOL
So it really adds to that feeling of French country that I have going in here now.
