Half Marathon - Train with me for Jan '11 - ...Shock - an update! 4/06! new pix

When you do long distance runs you usually peak in the length of your training run 2-3 weeks before your race. Then you do less mileage for the last few weeks. This gives your body time to recover from the long training runs so you're in peak form for race day. This isn't as important in half marathons, but all marathon runners do a taper. Hope that answers your question.

Thanks Jenny. :thumbsup2

HI everyone:wave2:

Sounds like we are all dealing with injurys right now. Add me to the list. I have arthristis in my feet and hands and one foot has been bothering me every since I have gotten back. I was finally able to stay off of it most of the day yesterday and today it didn't bother me much. I did try to walk a couple times this week, and did rather well, but Friday, I was really hurting.

Dislvr have you tried the toe socks? Wonder if they would help with the blisters between the toes?

Maroo I second the mole skin. I used to use it regularly in a couple spots until I found shoes that really worked for me.

Sandy hope you feel better soon. How did your week go? Does DH start work tomorrow? :goodvibes

Tim Sounds like you are doing good with your training. I would try something different. That might be what you need to get past that point you have reached.

carissanboys - Hi! I'm another of Sandy's friends. Welcome! You will be able to do a half. Especially if you have already started training. I walked the whole 1/2 except for a couple times when I jogged past people. I don't run, I walk. I started training last March and did 20 minutes miles and could barely walk one mile. I did the 1/2 at 15.5 minute mile. With regular training you will be ready. :thumbsup2

Leisa - sounds like you are really getting interested in one of the races. :goodvibes

Maroo - training on a treadmill is hard work - I get so bored... I lose focus way too easy!!

Dolce I think we're just going to have to get my chiropractor to come down - or at least next time wear shorts and have the KT guy tape you IT - the chiro said it is the hardest, and almost impossible to do on your own!!

HI, this is Jim from the KT Tape support team. We'd love to tape you up before the next race- just stop by our booth and we'll make sure you're taken care of. The ITBS taping is a little tricky but we've been showing runners how to do it for a long time with success. Here's a link to the instrutuctions (for both hip and knee pain): ITBS ***************/7cYh7V.

just dont think I can wear the tape 24/7! (the chiro mentioned 3 days is the max I should be wearing it for the PF)

That's correct- generally the foot apps last 2-3 days simply because the foot is a hard area for tape to adhere to long term. The point of KT Tape is not to become a long term solution, but to help reduce the stress on the tendon and facilitate quicker healing.

I've started over on the C25K program today. I walked way more of the 1/2 than I wanted to and hope I can increase my running intervals. We'll see how this goes.

Hi Jim! Not sure if you will check back here, but you are welcome if you do! I'm still using my KT tape and LOVING it. I'm hoping to see some instructions for peroneal tendinitis and TFL strain soon. (I did post that request on facebook.) Be sure to pop in on the WISH board at http://www.disboards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=109. That's where those of us who run/walk Disney and other distance events hang out. I'm sure that you would get a lot of questions and feedback about KT tape there.

Thanks for linking that dismagiclover!! I cried when i read it! Sandy you ARE a hero!! YOu look so radiant!!

:thumbsup2

Can someone explain what "taper" means? I've seen it mentioned quite a few times. Thanks!

Besides what Jenny says... :rolleyes1 In athletes I would agree - but for us crazy people... taper has come to mean, all that crazy pre race stuff - almost like nerves, jitters, its a madness doing a Half, Full, or a Goofy - and as you get ready to pack for that race I think that's the "taper" - every thing else is just plain MADNESS>... LOL

:yay: Patty! DH and many others swear by that interval training - also as time goes by you will want to increase some weight strength training in the quads... YOU GO GIRL!!

Hey Sandy!
I wrote about our encounter during the race in my trip report and I wanted you to read it. It is the last part of this post. You really are one of my heroes!

computers are an amazing thing... Jim of KT Tape - thank you for weighing in on that - and for confirming you'll be there again to help get us to the finish line!! :thumbsup2

Also I know their website has detailed video of the various taping methods that are very helpful!

Lisa how are things going with you?

I actually went a whole half mile!! I was able to get my shoe on - the swelling has gone down, but the coughing has started. yuck!

DH STARTED HIS JOB :woohoo::cool1::banana::dance3::cheer2: :worship:
and its everything we hoped it would be... now if we can just hold on till we get a couple of paychecks under our belts!!

DD is being 13 :confused3 emotional... some anger... some of it is she's getting the coughing crud too... so I'm mostly without a computer!

soon tho...

very very soon!!:woohoo: DH has a job...
:woohoo:

Congrats on your husband's new job! I can only imagine how stressful it's been.

Thanks for the dual explanation of taper. :thumbsup2

Yeah for employment!

I keep reminding myself that it's good to have a job even as I prepare to take furlough days. I am blessed to still be employed.

How absolutely wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!!!:woohoo::yay::banana::cool1:

You'll make it you know you will. :goodvibes

I'm here. Did 4 miles last night and I am paying for it again. My foot felt better and was fine while walking last night, but this morning......:scared:
I'm hobbling, but I'll make it. I think part of my problem is the cold. I definitely wouldn't be able to make where you all live.

Printed off my certificate the other night and DH wants to hang it. Then I showed him the very lovely pic taken of me by the castle. He was like "...hmmmmm classy" Yeah, that one won't be purchased. :rotfl2:

Lisa Good for you getting out there!

Carissa I forgot to mention that doing lunges, altho painful at first, is a great strength training to get you to the finish line!!

dislvr I hate that the mismanagement of IL has led to furlough days for the real workers of this state! Thank you for the work you do!! I appreciate you!!

Dolce any word on your IT??? Hope its positive + + + +

Maroo where are you? DId you take a quick trip to Disney??? Seriously - hope all is well and you are getting your miles in!!

Do you think you can print the certificate WITH the picture they show of you on it? I think I should ask Cynthia to work her magic in illustrator for that trick!! The prices they are charging are ridiculous!! I'd pay $5 - maybe $10 - but $20 a picture... um I'm not that cute!!

Sandy: I have this to say about your DH back at work: :woohoo: :woohoo:

Doctor's apt. tomorrow morning in regards to the IT band. It's a sports doctor. Fingers crossed that it's not too serious. I haven't ran since the marathon (:sad1: I miss running. Never thought I'd say that. I'm beyond eager to begin training for 2011) But - back on topic: while I haven't ran, my IT band has given me enough "twinges" to let me know that it's not yet healed. So, I'm a bit nervous about what the doctor will say in the morning.

Maroo where are you? DId you take a quick trip to Disney??? Seriously - hope all is well and you are getting your miles in!!

I just got off the phone with maroo!! She has pneumonia!! Seriously, ladies, she sounds really, really bad!! Please pray for her. She sounded discouraged about her training since her race is only 5 weeks away. Lisa (the lady she's going with) is doing great in her training, but Mary wants to be better and out training!

I know! I just responded on her pre-TR. :sad2: I have faith that she'll heal quickly and will do GREAT in the Princess 1/2 marathon.

Leisa Thank you for caring - :goodvibes She has the will and determination to make it to the end!!

GO Maroo GO :cheer2:

DH's job.... :faint: you know how the President talked about jobs? Well the small town money has to come from somewhere - - would you believe he is considering OUTSOURCING NASA projects? Seriously. Do we want our Space Program outsourced to China?

(that and DH is working as a sub contractor for NASA- so if it gets outsourced, dh is out of a job... AGAIN!)

We may have to write our congressmen/women... do not outsource NASA, the space program is a good thing ( velcro- - so many every day items have come from the space program... besides walking on the moon!) keep the jobs in AMERICA...

oh... and I ran 1`/2 mile- then my fingers froze.

I came inside.

I am a wimp in minus zero degree temps!

Sandy, the advantage to being a state worker is that I generally have pretty good job security. I know that four furlough days is nothing compared to what so many families (like yours!) are going through these days.

Maroo, I hope you feel better soon! I'm sending positive healing thoughts your way.

I hear all of you on the cold. I normally don't mind running in any sort of weather, but I am really struggling to get outside since WDW. I also have developed a serious fear of running on ice. I did make it outside last weekend because it was 36 degrees. Today is is 10 degrees and it is supposed to be 21 degrees this weekend. I can't imagine doing 8 miles outside in 21 degree weather. I can't do more than a few miles on my treadmill because it hurts my leg too much. I'm thinking about braving the campus rec center, but something about doing 40 laps (yes, 40) surrounded by size 2 college students doesn't appeal to me. It makes me feel so old!

I just got my Magical Express documents! The great irony here is that I didn't get them for our trip in December or January when I needed to check luggage and could have really used the luggage tags. This time I'm not checking anything (unless FL has really bad weather again) because I'm only going to be there for 2 nights.
