Half Marathon - Train with me for Jan '11 - ...Shock - an update! 4/06! new pix

Congrats to you guys!!! I finally made it to disboards! I really enjoyed meeting you guys and thanks for adopting me. Dolce, l'm so glad you made it, Mickey is so sweet & what a finish. We too had water issues, but the pipe burst the night I got home, so we caught it right away & my handy husband fixed it that night. He was not too pleased though & was still stressed from being trapped in the house with two boys for four days, going bananas. He's fine now. Maroo any water yet?
Sandy hope you had a good trip even with the weather, you are an inspiration. I wouldn't have done the race if it had not been for Lisa, I'm so glad she is my strong & determined friend. I had to sprint between mile seven and eight to avoid getting swept. It was a great feeling to cross that finish line, even though I looked like a neon yellow eskimo. :)

Girl!

I had no idea who that was and almost rejected your friend request. :rotfl:

We do finally have water!

I was without water in my house for 4 nights and at work for the same amount of time. But now there is a very odd odor in my whole complex...something I have never smelled before. We are still under a boil water alert and there is NO ONE at all staying in my building - so I am still at Lauren's house. We have had a good time catching up and playing games, though!

Wow! I am soooooo worried about getting swept!

What was your final chip time? Do you guys know? I am worried.....

Ok...I did 7 miles today! My personal longest distance ever! And I have YOU to thank, Sandy!

But I am an idiot. I KNOW better...but I did it in new shoes. :sad2: Oh well. They are broken in now. :rotfl2:

But it took me 2 hours. The first two miles I was on the phone and therefore quite slow...and I had to stop for the rest room twice...but 2 hours puts at close to 4 hours finishing?!?

I hope I speed up!

maroo: you will do GREAT on the Princess half. Seriously. Keep up your training program and you'll be fine! The longer you train, the more you'll naturally increase your speed.

If I weren't injured at the moment (:sad2:), I could run 3 - 4 miles at close to a 8 1/2 minute mile before burning out. I discovered that by accident during my training and then I had to teach myself to slow back down to my normal 9'3 (or 9'5 if I was having a rough run) minute mile. This was without any speed work. I didn't focus on speed work this training period, just endurance to complete 26.2 miles. Now, as soon as I can run again (I'm thinking March?), I'm going to work on some speed work this year and hopefully be able to do the 2011 marathon at around a 9' minute mile pace.

So, when is the Princess date? You're already up to 7 miles for a 1/2 marathon. Most 1/2's only have you train up to 10 miles. You're almost there! Then you can focus on increasing your speed. But, as you pointed out, chatting on the cell phone did slow you down. You'll have to work on staying focused on your pace. You'll be fine! We all have faith in you!

rocketlizzy: Happy that you're here! It was great to meet you last Saturday! I hope that you have your pipe issues fixed.

Sandy: Safe trip home today! I'm sure that you guys don't want to leave. I can't wait to hear about the rest of your stay at WDW this week!

We're all going back for the 2011 marathon week-end - right? right?

Dolce An 8.5 minute miles pace for 4 miles:worship: You fly like the wind! I'm going to try a little speed work this spring before I get into the official Marathon training. At my 11:30 mile pace that 20 mile training run could take a looong time:rolleyes1 Plus I want to do a 10K sometime this spring that I can use to get me into a higher corral. I guess we shall see.

Are any of you doing the princess half with maroo and I? Just curious if we should start a thread for that.

I did an easy 5 miles today and I'm back to my run 1/walk 1 pace. It actually felt good to run again after a couple of months of only walking. I'm following a very weird training schedule right now. During the week I am working on increasing the length of my running intervals by following the non-runners marathon pre-training plan. On the weekends I am doing my long runs with the walk 1/run 1 intervals. After the princess, I will drop back down to 5 miles and try to do longer running intervals as I build up my miles again for the Illinois half marathon on May 1st. (Sandy, you really need to think about doing that race. It is close, FLAT, and a wonderfully supported race.) I'm really starting to get nervous about doing two half marathons back-to-back. But, I suppose I can walk the Indy mini-marathon if I have to.

It was warmer here today than at WDW last weekend. I still can't get over the weather we had to deal with!

dislvr You are doing the Princess!! How did you do in the Donald? DH is hoping to start work in a week!!

I cant get my Disney fix until we start making money!!

We had an uneventful flight home!! The flight before us was supposed to leave at 6, was delayed, then set to leave at 7:30 (right after ours) when we got in Ohare, that flight was scheduled to arrive at midnight (we got in at 9pm!!) Luck! Felt so lucky - but our flight was booked and we were the last ones on the plane (AA seats back to front... "members first" ) so there were NO OVERHEAD bins - people were putting backpacks up there instead of under their seats... the flight attendants were no help (they were when we were going TO FL!!)

Our last tour day in the parks - OMG MK was FILLED - all those tour groups - you couldnt outrun them - they were everywhere! and there were several High school age kids - we took their pictures several times! (seeing someone with a camera outstretched - "would you like us to take you pic?")

oh, and I got a call from DS, Ryan's girlfriend's mom (mouth full... think his gf is L, she was so worried about Ry that she called her mom and said "no I'm not calling his parents" Well that didnt set right with L's mom so she called us... "oh, I didnt know you were in Disney, that's why L didnt call you I thought you were home!" Bless their hearts!!)

I called L she said Ry was very sick Th and Fri, but she thinks the fever broke, he was finally sleeping peacefully. Havent heard from her since!! so grateful she was there for him... (I wasnt of course, I was in Disney :sad2:) She did say he was signed up for classes, and went to a couple!! :woohoo:

today is a rest day, my foot is very swollen, and painful. and I'm tired! Maybe I'm just too old for this?

Dislvr feel free to start a pre trippie - or add on to Maroo's pre trip or post here - we'll be cheering you on!! :cheer2::cheer2::cheer2:

Oops, I went on over to maroo's pre-TR earlier before commenting on this.

I'm glad that Ryan is doing better. And no, you're not too old. Did you have enough K tape to use on your foot for the rest of the week? Hadn't that been helping some when I last saw you? Let the foot have a (much deserved) break and then start thinking about 2011  (I'm soooo looking forward to 2011!! (says me whose currently not having to train. :rolleyes1))

Thank you sooo much for that bit that you gave me. I know that it did squat for my left IT band but I'd also been developing some problems with the right leg. Between what you gave me and the free samples in the goodie bag, I was able to tape both legs and the right leg held up great (well, that part of it did ) for the marathon.

Dolce the tape was a godsend for the race - but later in the week it didnt seem as good, and I thought I was getting "itchy" from the tape (the guy at the expo said that the tape doesnt stick as well on the foot - so I would add duct tape...

DS Nathan picked us up from the airport - he brought our puppy - and his friend, the chiropractor... I thanked him for helping me get to the finish line, and then talked about the tape... and of course he knew all about the tape... (wish he mentioned it to me before the race!) he said it really is only good for about 3 days - then he talked all medical about it - but said it does really well..

I mentioned your IT and the tape, and he said its one of the hardest areas to tape - that it really takes practice to get it right to be helpful - he said he went over to a friend's at 6:30 am (I think he's starting to drop names!) to tape an IT problem so the friend could play tennis....

Hi Sandy and congrats on finishing your marathon. Did I read that correctly the full marathon? Very impressive either way (full or half).

I'm a 40 year old woman (COUGH, COUGH ;) ) who's lost 35 pounds since July. I started out doing a lot of walking to help shed those pounds, but as I got in better shape, I began to run to burn more calories. I have set a goal to run the Tower of Terror run in October.

Any training tips you have will be appreciated! Thanks. :)

So you've decided to take the plunge and keep training for the Jan. '11!? So proud of you! Someday, I'll be there with you guys! Someday.

Welcome home Sandy!

Did I hear Jan '11 marathon? When are you gonna start the training? Or does one run into the next? Like- THE TRAINING NEVER STOPS!:goodvibes

:welcome: Michelle - Come join us!! WTG on your weight loss!! and you are a youngster!!

So one thing I make perfect sense to me - but I inadvertently confuse others :confused3

HALF MARATHON PEOPLE... I'm not Goofy!! :rotfl2: a Full marathon - me? :rotfl2: I'll leave that to the athletes in the crowd (Dolce, Lisa...)

I still have a goal to accomplish - and I think if I lose 20# it would help me achieve that goal!! Any tips Michelle? I'm thinking counting calories, no soda, wine, fruit juice, sweet tea, cream, Half and half... :rolleyes1

I'm considering getting the Dr. OZ book - and working on his exercises... and of course to continue to improve my time - to be consistent with 16 min miles! (I did ok for the first half, it was sustaining the pace!)

Michelle have you signed up for the Tower of Terror? I thought it was discontinued - the wine relay thing replaced it?? :confused3 Are you a teacher? I am a permanent substitute teacher - I used to teach 5th grade, but stopped when my first born was diagnosed as hard of hearing. I miss the paychecks, and the health insurance...

there are lots of great tips, help, and people on the WISH event/comp board...
http://www.disboards.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&daysprune=365&f=109

WISH not only gave me the courage to start - but the encouragement to continue!!

I hope to start my Trip Report (as soon as I load up pictures)

:welcome: Michelle - Come join us!! WTG on your weight loss!! and you are a youngster!! )

Thanks, but I don't know about the youngster part. I'll be 42 this week. Somedays I feel 24, other days I feel 72!

So...I'm confused...you ran the 1/2 marathon...Is that right?

Me too...I would like to lose another 20, but the winter is so hard for me. I'm trying to hang on to what I've done, and not gain too much back, so I can hit it hard as soon as it warms up. I'm sure there are plenty of others who have better ideas than me, but for me it's just about eating less and exercising more. I know that's not very fun, but that's the only thing to work for me. I try to make good food choices, eat a good breakfast, skip lunch, or just eat an apple or yogurt. Then I eat whatever I cook for my family for dinner, only in moderation. I love my sweet tea, as any respectable southern girl does, but I've tried to not drink my calories! So, more water for me.

I have not signed up and must have missed that it was no longer. Oh well, I would be happy with the January event, or the princess one in the spring.

Yes, I am a teacher, have taught school for 15 years and enjoying my day off! ;)

Sandy - you ARE NOT too old for this. You can do this and it will help with the weight also. You have finished twice now and you will finish again (with no issues) in 2011.
So glad you all got home okay. I was really hoping you wouldn't have the weather issues you did going down.

Dolce - glad you are letting the IT heal before you continue your training. I mentioned to someone that you had an IT issue and they gave me this real puzzled look and finally asked "Why would someone have a computer with them during a race?":rotfl2:

Maroo - don't worry about being swept. You will be fine. My official time was 3:24:58. Not my best, but it was my very first race and I am so polite sometimes, that I kept getting out of others way. Finally figured out (a bit late) to just let them go around me and I finally learned to say, "On your left" when I wanted to pass someone.
Plus from what I understand there are not near as many people at the Princess.

Are you back in your apartment yet? What about work?

Dislvr - You are doing the Princess also? WOW! I'm impressed. You will be fine. I'm ready to go for another one. I wish I could do the Princess, but like Sandy & Dolce, gotta get the funds back up. Plus I am out of vacation time at work right now.

MHTeacher - congrats on the weight loss! WTG!!!!!!:cool1: Are you joining us for 2011?

dismagiclovr - can a 10K time help you get to another corral? If so, I might try one around here.

We also had plumbing issues when I got home. We live in a country subdivision where all the lots are 1 acre or more and we all have our own septic systems. Ours has an irrigation system with it and all of the sprinkler heads froze and busted. .......so our system shut down. :headache: I was so upset (still reeling from the fabulous landing our pilot did :rolleyes1) that I didn't sleep at all. I ended up staying home from work to help DH fix the irrigation system, but we ended up calling a technician anyway. :sad2: Everything is fine now.

We spent the weekend packing up Christmas. Always sad.:sad1: The house seems very empty now.

I plan to start back on my training tomorrow. Maroo's 7 miles are inspiring me. :thumbsup2

:)

I am back at work and my condo smells good! The water is brown, though? They say it is safe....but I don't like brushing my teeth and bathing in brown water. :confused3

So I am still at Lauren's.

I did the 7 miles in just under 2 hours...so if I do the math...then I am looking at closer to 4 hours than 3:30...?? which makes me nervous.

They have re-opened the Princess Half for 2500 more people - I had heard it would be 13,000+... But didn't you guys have 17,000?

It is still a lot of people. But I am hoping to get forward in my corral - stay to the side and out of people's way - but get a head start on the sweeper buses.

MHTeacher - congrats on the weight loss! WTG!!!!!!:cool1: Are you joining us for 2011?

Thanks.....JOINING YOU FOR WHAT????? I hope you don't mean a marathon? I haven't even run a 5K yet! ;)---In all seriousness, I would love to be able to do such a thing. I really need to check out that website Sandy mentioned that helps you train for marathons. :thumbsup2

MHTeacher, I ran/walked my first half marathon three weeks before my youngest 1st birthday. If I can go from being totally unathletic to doing several half marathons per year, anyone can! You probably want to start with a half before trying a full. I'm waiting until my kids are older and I can get the image of those last finishers limping towards the end of the full out of my mind before I even think about doing a full. My mom and I are thinking about going Goofy for the 10th anniversary in 2015. I'll turn 40 that year and my mom will be 62.

The only reason I am going back for the Princess is that good ol' Disney fuzzy math. I got an annual pass for my birthday/Christmas present (my birthday is in June, but I didn't care). Airfare happened to be pretty low when I bought my tickets and I'm only stayed for three nights for Donald and I'll be there two nights for the Princess. I almost cancelled after I found out that I have to take four furlough days this semester, but decided to go because everything is already paid for.

I just added up the entry fees for the 5 races I did/am doing from Nov 2009-May 2010. Ouch. This is an expensive addiction!

I'm looking for a fall race somewhere near central IL. I might do the Monumental again, but it wasn't super walker friendly, so my mom won't do it again. I would like to find one that both of us can do. Mom will do the RnR half in Chicago in August, but I can't train for summer races due to my job. (I work for a university and summer is our busiest time due to new student orientation.) Any suggestions?

Thanks for the inspiration. :goodvibes

You ladies (or gents, if there are any here) are very motivating people. I'm feeling like I could run a 1/2 marathon tomorrow! :thumbsup2

Well...............

Dolce - glad you are letting the IT heal before you continue your training. I mentioned to someone that you had an IT issue and they gave me this real puzzled look and finally asked "Why would someone have a computer with them during a race?":rotfl2:

:rotfl2: Thanks for the laugh! I actually may go and see a sports doctor about it. I found one today who sounds good. I'd already planned to take a couple of months off from running to let it heal but now I'm paranoid that's it's more severe than I assume and won't heal on its own. I don't want to wait 2 months only to discover that it's not healed and that I need to see a doctor. So, I'm going to go and see a doctor now. I really want to run. I had such a good experience last Sunday, I'm eager to run and train for 2011 now. Are you doing the half or full next year?

Sandy: Weight Watchers. I lost 78lbs on Weight Watchers a couple of years ago.

MHTeacher: They did discontinue the Tower of Terror 13k :sad1: I wanted to run it this year as well. And, yes, Sandy ran the 1/2 marathon and she's going back for 2011!!! You should sign up for the Donald before it fills. You'll have a year to train! You'll be fine!

Sandy: There is a plaque of my grandmother's (the one that I told you about) that I have and it's the only thing of hers that I have. It says: Age doesn't matter unless you're a cheese.

that's nice and All7ofUs REALLY need to sign up for the 2011 1/2 marathon. They've been on here this entire time - they might as well run it! They should already be able to mumble our crazy training plans in their sleep!

Maroo: I'm glad your condo smells nice and I hope the water looks normal soon. You're going to do great at the Princess Half! I promise! Are you signing up for the Donald 2011?

dislver: If you want to try for the full - go for it! You know that I was injured last Sunday and had to walk half of it due to injury. I still came in under 6 hours. 5,000 people finished after me and 8,000 people never even made it to the finish!

Nothing against those last few that you saw limping across the finish that has scared you - I don't know who they were or anything about them. But if you properly train, you won't be one of them if you decide to go full for 2011. And, based on your prior posts, you're a serious trainer.

Oh, and I've seen some questions about corral times: I got bumped up to Corral B in the full based on my 8 mile Turkey Trot time. (although I had my time for the half-marathon that I ran last Nov as well) I plan to run another 1/2 marathon this Nov. and that time is what I'll submit for the 2011 full. The 2010 full time won't be an accurate reflection since I had to walk 1/2 of the 2010 marathon but expect to fully run the 2011 and finish around the 4 hour mark.

Dolce - Call me a pessimist...but I want to finish the Princess before I sign up for the Jan half (or maybe the October half?)....:rolleyes1

Oh...you can TOTALLY do this!

You can even walk it...the whole thing. Most people jog some and walk some (if they are new at this), but I am hoping to walk most of it and only jog a bit once I am VERY warmed up (maybe some in the MK if I feel inspired)...just enough to escape the sweeper buses!

Just start small and then work your way. I went from 1 mile walks a few months ago to a 7 mile walk last Friday. You can do it! Trust me!

Are you DOING the Princess?? How did I miss that??

Sorry...I have no clue on what other Marathon events there are...as far as I am concerned...I will only do them in Disney! :cloud9:
