Happy Monday everyone! Hope everyone had a great weekend! I did my ZooRun 10K on Saturday. Here's a quick race report:
I woke up at 6:45AM and started getting prepared - the usual eating, making sure I had all my gear with me... I made a PB & grape jelly bagel to go but didn't let the bagel cool down enough so the PB&J leaked out. It made a big mess in the sandwich bag. And then someone ...
Miss Eva ... sent me the peanut butter jelly song which I can't get out of my head
Anyway, I left my house at about 7:30 and made it close zoo at about 7:40 but there were some road closures this weekend which meant everyone was running late. The road going into the zoo was so backed up that by the time we parked and walked over to the start, they had let the elite runners go. I wasn't even in the corral yet but it was okay because they seemed to be holding everyone else back. I jumped in just as they were letting the other runners go and I was off. I didn't get a chance to warm up but that's okay because I usually don't

I heard an announcement saying that the start line would stay open until 8:40AM but I have no idea if that was enough time to accommodate all the people still stuck in their cars. I saw a lot of people getting out and running to the start line.
The course was really crowded - it starts in the parking lot of the zoo and then goes to the outside streets that border the zoo and then back into the zoo. People were just running all over the place and it was really hard to pass people because parts of the course had two way traffic. I nearly smashed into one runner who just as he was exiting the parking lot decided to stop suddenly and declare "Man, I'm so tired!". You can't be tired - we weren't even 1/2 a mile out yet.

Later on in the course, another runner was chatting with her friend and must have been having an animated conversation because all of a sudden she started waving her arms and stuck both of them out in front of her. I saw people having to dodge around her.
I saw quite a few animals - zebras, elephants, giraffes and polar bears. I thought they might get some better times if they let the lions out

How does the saying go - you don't have to be the fastest, just as long as you're not the slowest. I ended up walking a few times during the race. It was a result of not having run much for about 2 weeks since the half. The course was also a lot more hilly than I remembered it. My only complaint aside from the crowding was that the volunteers were calling the sports drink Gatorade. I drank some half way through to see if it would give me a bit of a kick. It gave me a stomach cramp for the last half and I couldn't figure out why. After I finished - there were volunteers handing out drinks. I noticed they were filling the "Gatorade" cups with Powerade! Ah-ha! Gatorade is not the same thing as Powerade…
Anyway I finished with a time of 58:49 which is a course PB. Last year, I finished the course in 1:00. Considering my knee, the hills and not having run for about two weeks, I'm pretty happy with the results.
Margie - Glad to hear you got a deal on the boots! Kids outgrow clothing so quickly, you need to get deals on whatever you can. I missing the morning sunshine when I run during the weekdays but there's something I like about running in the dark. I just have to be a little more careful of the sidewalk cracks and dips. How did you niece do on her half?
Dave - Hope you're able to fix the furnace before it gets too chilly. Is it still warm where you are? A friend of mine in DC says the weather there is still relatively nice. KY is south of DC?
Denise - Congrats on your 7lb loss! You'll be at 10 lbs in no time at all! Sounds like you had a busy weekend! Free fries are so tempting - I don't know if I would have been able to resist.
Scott - WTG on your half! How did you manage to add an extra 3+ miles onto your race? Was the Garmin off or did you count the miles that you did when you went back for Lynn? Safe travels to LA!
Lynn - Congrats on the half and finishing ahead of the sweepers! I will have to go and check out your FB pic.
Beth - Yes, that is the race I saw on TV last year. I wished we did something like that here in Toronto. It looks like a lot of fun! I'm glad that your chiro says that you can keep running. Make sure to take it easy though.
AFM - I'm getting my eating back on track and now that my knee is feeling better. I'm going to try increasing the mileage. For those of you training for the full in January… are we on week 7? I think I should be okay to jump back into the program here. I did a half race about two weeks ago and a 10K on the weekend. I'm following Higdon's plan which calls for a LR of 14 miles this Sunday. I may pull it down to 12 but depending on how I feel, I'm going to give the 14 a shot. I've got training at the gym tonight and I'm hoping to get out tomorrow morning for a 4 miler.
Hope everyone is having a great day!
