Hi Team!

Remember me? I finally have a day off from both jobs, and I actually slept!

Here is the Expedition Everest Challenge Race Report:

When I headed down for the race, I was convinced that it would be my last Everest. I had done the previous four and they changed the race enough over the years to make it easier and easier. Liz and I had done the first one on our honeymoon in 2008 and it was our official "first race". Back then the race consisted of a 5K run, then four obstacles in a seperate area, and then some pretty tough clues to solve as you had to find our way though the AK at night.
As the years have gone on, I've enjoyed the race and done well in it, but they made it more of a runners race. By that, I mean they eliminated some of the obstacles, made them easier, and combined them into the 5k. The clues also got changed into a pattern of travel inside the park, so no one was running back and forth. The obstacles got easier because people compalined that they were too hard, and there were a few injuries. The path got easier because the clue hunters were criss crossing the race path, which was actually a good change that I agree with. Then the clues got a little "dumbed down" because people complained they were too hard to solve.
So, my attitude wasn't were it should be. I was also completely worn out from working 60 hours in four and a half days. :faint: So, I arrived last Thursday morning and check into the All Star Sports resort. My room was ready, so I showered, ate at the food court and headed over to DTD and shopped for pins and tshirts. Team Mickey now carries a small selection of Run Disney stuff if you are looking.
Friday I did the Studios and picked up my race packet. As it seems to happen at Disney, things started to change for the better. At pick up, I was told to go to a special tent to get a gift for being "perfect 5" and doing all five races so far. I was expecting maybe a card or a pin of some sort, but got something way cooler. They gave us a stuffed yeti with custom mouse ears with 2012- Perfect Fifth Adventure stitched on it. He is going to have his own shelf when we build a race wall someday. I also discovered a very nice sign with the names of all the perfect runners on it. There were 42 of us. So, I was feeling the Disney magic that suddenly appeared and I was glad to be there. This race has always felt a little like it was an oddball, and it didn't quite have the backing that the other Disney races did. This year, they spent some bucks and added alot of extras! Nice shirts, a better starting area, more decorations for photo ops, and a nice colored medal!
On race day I headed over to MK for a while and then took a nap. The race started at 9pm and the first bus left at 730. I like to get there early, hydrate, listen to the DJ and hang out. The race is at night, so it cools off as the sun sets. A lot of people dress up, and there was one absolutely crazy guy dressed in a full, furry, yeti costume (it was still about 90 degrees) and he was dancing with the music! The race can be run as an individual or as teams and it is always fun to see what the team names are. I happened to run into Chester Scott and his daughter, who are WISHERS and also "perfect". Only Chester could sport lime green zebra skinned tights!
The race ran in wave and I was in wave one again! Lots of fireworks and off we went into the AK parking lot for the first mile and the first obstacle of small haybales to be hopped over. The second mile heads through the park entrance and through Africa and into the backstage area and past some of the animal houses. Then it was the second obstacle of tires (like football players) and back towards the parking lot. Mile three had a net to crawl under and then the first clue card at the end. The clue has to be puzzled out, and shown for the next card at the oasis. Then onto Camp Minnie-Mickey with the same process. Again in Africa, and then in Asia. All four answers have to be used to solve the last clue and cross the finish line.
I did pretty well and finished 34th out of 298 in the the individual mens category. My best has been 20th, but I did better than last year. Then it was off to the post race party in Dino land and onto some of the open rides. I got to ride Kali river rapids by myself, in the dark. I love finishing earlier than the crowd! Then rode Donosaur, and got some food and a beer. The race has 5000 and their families generally come to the party with them, so the Dino area gets pretty crowded. I stayed long enough to savor the run and the atmosphere a bit and hopped the bus back to the resort. All in all, I had a great time and now feel motivated to keep my "perfect" streak alive next year. Anyone want to join me?
Sunday was a day at EPCOT and then back to the MK for pin trading. If you haven't been down for the Flower and Garden show, I do highly recommend it. The park is really well done, and the toparies are different every year.

HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY KIP!!!

Good luck Vicky and Kim in your races!

This morning was the first time in running shoes since my seven days of resting my hip. It was SO GOOD to be outside! I had a 15-mile Long Walk in my AVON training plan for today so at 6:30am I headed out, wearing my new hydration pack (I really like this pack. Not sure if I want to wear it when I run, but for walking it is perfect).

The weather was pretty nice... 62 degrees and overcast with a slight breeze. There was the threat of rain but luckily for me, no rain interfered with things. I took a very different route today, going places I have never walked/run before. At one point, I entered the Northwest Prairie Path at a different place than I usually do so that I could cross the new bridges! But darn it, they were still closed! In fact, the second bridge closing caused me to have to leave the path and dropped me in an area of Lake in the Hills that I was not familiar with. Thank goodness for the iPhone GPS which led me home.

Since I was in the neighborhood, I decided to make a surprise stop to visit Mike at his house. But I forgot that he was running a Half in downtown Chicago today. So I got there but he wasn't there. Bummer! So I kept on towards home -- having to traverse lots of good hills along the way (I was having flashbacks of running the "Run Through the Hills 10K" race last month).

But I finished the 15.01 miles with an average walking pace of 15:36/mm. I was happy with that, especially considering the hills and the many times I had to stop and wait for stoplights and such.

This was my longest Walk ever, and the longest amount of time being 'on my feet' during a training: 3 hours, 54 minutes. And my legs and feet felt pretty good afterwards. This is very encouraging as I get ready for the AVON Walk and eventually for the Chicago Marathon.

Tomorrow will be another 10-mile Walk before heading to church. Gotta keep moving! ;)

Have to go back to read everyones posts over the last few days but just needed to tell all that my vote was for whispering canyon under protest. Mike wants that one but I want Chef Mickeys;)

Today I ran a half in Chicago. This was my first time doing this race. It was a similiar course to the Polar Dash that we ran in January, but started a little further North. I was aprehensive about doing the race because of ongoing issues with my left achilles tendon and hamstring, but decided to give it a try.
I was up at 3:30 and made the hour drive into the city and wondered how it was going to be because the NATO conference is going on there. I saw no issues at all, with actually less traffic than normal.
I started the race and figured I would pull out if my leg hurt too bad. During the first half mile, I got some major twinges up my left heel and ankle that almost made me quit. I gave it until the first mile to see how it held out and once it warmed up, the pain was managable.
The day started off cool and overcast and by mile two it was thundering over Lake Michigan and I could see the rain moving it. The wind picked up and the storm hit by mile three. It rained constantly for the rest of the race. I was soaked through, and at times the rain stung as it hit me in the face because the wind was so strong. At the turn around, we headed directly into what had to be 30mph winds. The good news was that I set a PR for the first 10k.
My leg tightened up and I had to walk quite a bit during the second half of the race. I was limping pretty bad by the end and my leg just didn't want to work, and the temp dropped so much that my hands were starting to go numb. I ended up being one towards the end of the pack and fininshed in 2:25:26. I was glad it was over! I collected my medal and headed to the car to make the drive home! UGGG! :sad2:
I got home and Sticked my leg after a shower. Its sore, but I can walk! I figure that I really earned this medal today, and I would have been grumpy all day if I blew off the race. So all in all, another one in the books. Not my best day, but not my worst!

Mike: You toughed it out and was victorious! I knew you were going to run that race! Sorry to hear that the achilles was a thorn in your side today. Hopefully, you can ice it down well and it will improve. You and Dave need to talk -- he is learning some good PT stuff for the heel. I hope you aren't working tonight so you can rest. You have earned it! :goodvibes

Good morning Team.

Mike as Rick said I'm learning a lot from the thearpy people, yes I'm finally getting that Achillies treated, I've been training with some degree of pain for years. Tell us how the job at the running store is going.

Rick, glad to hear your enjoying your walks. I might just convert you to the dark side. I have several friends competing in Russia this weekend and they are race walking 5Ks in the 20 min range and 10Ks in the 41 min range. Yes some of them are the ones helping the Panda evolve.

Everyone have an awesome Mother's Day. Sally never had children and my mother left us in 1998 so we are not doing a mom's day but going to see the Avengers and taking an easy training walk.

Dave:hippie:

Dave: Thanks! I do enjoy walking. I have been doing more walking than running in recent weeks. I do love to run :) but I admit that I am interested to learn more about how to speed up my walking pace.

AFM: I got another 10.3 miles in the books this morning. My legs were definitely tired from yesterday so my pace was a lot slower today. But the walk was good and the weather was perfect. So that's 25 miles in two days.

Christi hasn't decided what she wants to do for Mother's Day yet, but I am sure dining out will be involved. Hopefully my two daughters will get home by early afternoon so we can celebrate before the evening crowds.

Hey team!!!!!

WTG Mike for gutting it out, you are a inspiration to the WISH team. Sorry to hear you have been having issues, I have been missing alot of posts lately. How are you feeling today??? Tell Liz happy mothers day!!!!

Rick you are doing so well with your training WTG buddy!!!!! Happy mothers day to Christi!!!!

Dave how's it going? Don't hear much from you these days my friend, hope all it going well for you. Sally should get to celebrate mothers day she has to look after you and keep ya outta trouble doesn't she:scratchin

I am pooped from my 10K today, not so much the race but did not sleep at all last night and when I was finally able to go to sleep it was time to get up. Did my best 10K time ever 1:16:22, my splits where 33:33 for the first 5K I just wish I could have carried that time through to the 2nd half. Geee makes me think what could I do if I actually trainned for a race::yes:: Vicky rocked the race but I am sure she will be here soon to check in.

Have a awesome mommys day to all the moms on the team Have a great day.

Kim

Well, I've no idea whats going on with my right hip area. Tuesday I reached over my head for something while I was at work and ever since then I've had a sore spot in that area when I walk. I'm figuring that I probably pulled something when I was over reaching.

I thought I might be better today and go for a walk or jog if it felt okay. After doing the shopping earlier this afternoon, the answer to that clearly was not today. It's feeling better, just not 100%.

Congratulations to all those that had events this weekend! Seeing everyone completing events has started to make my antsy! So far I've only got 1 event for this year lined up and then Marathon Weekend for next January.

I just got a Groupon for a 5K that's going to be around Labor Day weekend... which I just checked and it's sold out. That's what I get for procrastinating. It's a race that my Cousins wife and his sons wife just competed in out east. It's called Color Me Rad. Their pictures looked like they had a blast. It's definitely a different take on a 5K race!

Since I'm not going to visit friends in DC this Memorial Day Weekend, we may get together over Labor Day weekend, so I'm not too sure that would have worked out for me. I've also been trying to find out the possibility of an event out in DC Labor Day weekend too as possibly more incentive :)

So, with my downtime this week, I've started to prepare my training schedule for the Monumental Half on 11/3 and how I'll tie that into my schedule for Marathon Weekend. It looks like I'll start my official training on 8/12, culminating with the event on 11/3. I'll take it slow or entirely off the following week and then start again at week 4 on 11/11 in my training program to wind up for Marathon Weekend!

Last Year I started with C25K, then Bridge to 10K and then jumped right into Hal Higdons Novice 1 Half Marathon Training. This year I'm basing my plan on his Novice 2 program, which is aimed at better time than just making it to the finish. Both of those programs are 12 week programs, so when I say that I'll start up again at week 4, that's what week it is in the program.

Hi team! Happy Monday! Hope everyone had a great weekend!

Kipp - Hopefully your hip is feeling better today. The reason I register for races is because I'd flake out on training otherwise. The races force me to train because I don't want to put in a bad time. Most people are disciplined enough to train without the races but I'm not  LOL Finding a race in DC sounds like fun! Are there any other smaller events in your area like a 10K or 15K?

Kim - It was so great hanging out with you before the race. Thanks so much for taking me to the start :) And a huge congrats on your PB that is a fantastic time!! Your 5K time is very impressive!! Get training and you'll blow this PB out of the water on your next race.

Saylan/Sue/Kim - Any plans for the long weekend?

Rick - I still have your email and haven't forgotten. It's on my 'to-do' list. You've been walking up a storm recently. How are you feeling about the Avon walk? Say hi to Christi!

Dave - I agree with Kim! Sally should get to celebrate too! How's your achilles feeling these days? Are you making good progress with the PT?

Mike - You and your back to back racing! That is awesome! Congrats on both your races! And way to tough out the half marathon! Do you know how you irritated your achilles and your hamstring? Hope they're both feeling better today. Do you normally do EE as an individual or in a team? I've never run that race before so I'll have to put it in the 'to run' list.

Kimberley - Congrats on the free shoes and free race entry! That's awesome! I run in the NB 860. I think they have a letter somewhere in their name after the model changed for 2012. I like them - they're a stability shoe for overpronators. Just make sure you get fitted for a pair that you like. Lots of PD headed your way! I hope this month doesn't get too crazy for you.

Emily - I like your idea for a digital scrapbook with the 'Up!' theme. I've never used Photoshop Elements before, only Photoshop. I'll have to look into that program. Did you get to go running this weekend?

Lynn - Are you still travelling in Hawaii?

AFM - I am slowly recovering from my sore throat. I have much less coughing which is nice. I did the 10K race with Kim yesterday and got a PB of 56:09. My previous PB was 58:07 and I wish I could have gotten in under 56 but that's okay. The course was crowded from start to finish so I didn't get a chance to go faster at the end. It was pretty packed for a 10K, I believe there were 22,000 runners and the race organizers were donating all of the race entry fees to charity. I'm working on a race report which should be up by tomorrow.

I came home afterward and made some banana chocolate chip protein pancakes. I always love having panackes after a race! These ones were quite easy to make but I always stink at flipping them over.

Rick - I still have your email and haven't forgotten. It's on my 'to-do' list. You've been walking up a storm recently. How are you feeling about the Avon walk? Say hi to Christi!

I believe I am ready for the AVON Walk. I have two more Long Walks this weekend (8 miles on Sat and 18-20 miles on Sun) and then I get to rest/taper.

I know AVON is not a race and not timed, but for me it feels like my first Full & Half challenge (I guess it is... from a 'distance' point-of-view) -- like an untimed Goofy walk event. So in addition to everything the Walk means to me, it is also an endurance event that will test my ability to go 39.3 miles.

Completing this Walk will be emotional for me on many different levels. I am feeling both excited and nervous. But I believe I am ready. ::yes::

I agree - I think you are more than ready - you have been really good about your training -you should be proud of yourself! Sending good thoughts your way!

Hi team!

Rick - Sounds like a good plan! I'm excited for you as well! Walking the distance will be a lot different than running it. I'll bet by the time you get to Disney in January, the 39.3 miles will just fly by!

AFM - Not much happening here. Just busy at work. I did manage to finish my race report. So check it out if you have a chance.

Other than that, I'm heading to the gym tonight for a workout. And then probably home after that to relax :)

Hope everyone is having a great day!

Hi!

I left early from work last night, feeling really run down. I had a major headache when I went in and just didn't want to be there. I slept alot and went for a short run today. The weather was too nice to pass on it. 85 degrees and sunny. I guess I was actually sick, as I couldn't even run a mile without gasping for air, and just couldn't get in any kind of a rythm. It drives me nuts, as I felt like a new runner, just days after running a half marathon. My heel felt okay until the end. It seems that I am in a bit of a funk! :upsidedow

Vicky and Kim~ Great race and finish times! You two had a fantastic day!

Dave~ the second job at the running store is going good. I like it alot and the manager is great, and really involved in running and tri's.

Robert has one week left of school and then my schedule will lighten up a bit! (or so I hope!)

Thats it for today, tomorrow both jobs!

-Mike :cool2:

Vicky~ I think I originally torqued my hamstring during one of the Spring races with a ton of steep hills. I think I agravated the achilles by compensating for the hammy.
I have run the EE Challenge both as a team and individually. Both ways are fun!

Mike! You and me, buddy! It is time for some Colonial Cafe/Around The Clock action, complete with pie or ice cream (or both)! This is a funk-relief intervention! :rotfl:

Hey everyone!!

Mike sorry you aren't feeling great buddy but we have to get you and Rick out of this funk!!!!!:grouphug:
