Well I couldn't stand not moving since Sunday so I went for a walk after work. 6.6 miles at a 14:35/mm pace and the temp was around 80. I started late so it was dark by the time I got back home. But I was happy to get out there! :goodvibes

The legs, hip, and feet were all fine. No problems! Yay!!! So now I can wait until Saturday for my 13-mile Long Walk, followed by a 10-mile Long Walk on Sunday. This is 'walk month' as I finish my training for the AVON Walk on June 2nd. There is still time for anyone who wants to support me with a donation for this great cause. ::yes::

My wife flies to California for seven days to visit her sister and relatives out there. It is going to be a little more busy for me while she is out there having fun. :lmao:

Thanks to all for your kind words - I love being a part of this group! Feel good since the 1/2 on sunday. Funny, my legs felt great, it was my biceps and shoulders which were KILLING me on sunday night/monday - I must have been really pumping them to get up those crazy hills!:rotfl: My dh said that some people were passing their kids over the rails to give to runners to complete the race to finish and he didn't know what to do. I told him thanks for not doing that as I could not have carried my son those last few feet! It was enough to see his smiling face, rosey cheeks and cute pompom hat (red pompom) on the sidelines waving to me - it's an image I will always have in my head (and gets me teary eyed each time I think of it!). I ran 5 miles yesterday and today - both admittedly slow but felt good!

Luzzbightyear - congrats on your awesome weight loss as well! it always amazes me I've essentially lost my kid twice! (he's 40 pounds) and it wasn't an "official" beer club - a mountain goat running club was just doing a social service for us! ;)

Rick - that's funny our first marathons are the same day - awesome! we'll have to be running buddies through osmosis and karma and also compare notes on how our training plans are coming! and I've been really tired to - am thinking of adding some iron vitamins to the mix - really exhausted - hard to get up in the morning. I was anemic as a (skinny) teen and I wonder if that's revisiting with the running and weight loss.

bunnyfoo - you picked my fave veggie - sundried tomatoes! I've put it on my list to make -yum! I hope the acupuncture works!

Piglet - so glad to see you're coming to disney! and that run with the deer sounds nice - my view is of the train tracks!

KIm - I've plateaued to for about two months - I have ten more to lose which are not interested in leaving!

MaryJ - good job on losing vacation weight - although I'm sure it was well worth the gain!

Hey team!!!!

Got in a good 90ish min workout this morning. Did Jillians 30 days schred then 2.75m of TM intervals. I hate doing intervals on the TM cause my times are so slow compared to on the road but I got the steps in.

Radiofanatic: Thanks for the encouragement. I haven't really been helping myself lately. A bit of life getting the best of me for a bit but I'm back and determind to not be heavy for goofy #2

Rick: WTG on getting out there and no pain that is awesome. So Christi left you without adult supervision??? Or is that Ryans job::yes::::yes:::rotfl2: Hope she has a awesome time and try to stay out of trouble

Mike: WHERE ARE YOU??????

Dave: Are you with Mike????

Kipp: WTG on getting out there even in the storms:eek:

Vicky: At this point mostly looking for a meal replacement. I want to replace my dinner. I have a big lunch and a million things to do at night so usually end up making bad choices so was trying to have a smoothie for this meal cause even on the run I can take it with me in the car etc. How did the treatment go last night?

Sorry ran out of time. How is everyone doing????? We are getting closer and closer to marathon weekend!!!!!!!

Is Kona a for sure team meet in January? Have we discussed Sunday dinner place yet?

Kim

LOL! I am free! I am going to stay out all night, wild parties, greasy foods...! ::wakes up suddenly:: Whoa! That was a strange dream...

I am unsupervised but I promise to behave myself. :rotfl2: Ryan and I are going to see the Avengers movie Friday night. That is probably the most exciting thing I will be doing this weekend because I will be working on upgrading all the computers at my church this weekend. Ugh!

Hi Team.

The storms here on monday knocked out our internet access. The repair man from cable came out today and fixed it. I'm still around and not with Mike, Kimmer.

I have been resting this week and trying to get my achillies under control. I went to the Ortho Doc and he gave me a splint and I've been using it, seems to be helping. I'm also doing a lot of icing and massaging for my calf and achillies. Next week after this weekends half I get to start PT. I also bought some new high tech compression socks for recovery after the race.

We leave early in the morning for Indy. We are traveling with friends and meeting more there so it will be a large time.

Hope everyone is doing good.

Dave:hippie:

Rick: :rotfl2: Mike did the same thing with DD and I where alway last week his big thing was was that he was going to blast the stereo... :)

Dave: Whew thought we where going to have to send out a search party for ya. How are things? How is Sally??? Have a blast in Indy and race smartly.

Just did another little walk tonight, just like to get out at night so even thought I did my intervals this morning got out for a slow stroll this evening. Tomorrow P90X Shoulders and arms. I have incorporated some of the P90X into my training just the weights none of the cardio. I figure I am getting that with my training and don't want to risk foot or leg injuries again. My goal........is for the first time ever be trained and uninjured for a race. i have never done that ::yes::

Hi Team!

Kim- I am glad you are getting your motivation back! When DH and I have done smoothies we have always kept it simple: 1 banana, 2 cups frozen strawberries (or raspberries or cherries), 1 cup milk, ½ cup plain vanilla yogurt and blended. We never added powders to it, although you easily could if you wanted to. You could also add ½ cup of freshly squeezed orange juice and honey. We like it, although I don't think it would be enough to replace a dinner meal. You might need to pair something else with it.

Rick- LOL how can you say May hasn’t been productive fitness wise? We’re only 4 days in! You still have plenty of time to change that. :thumbsup2 I hope you make it out for your walk tomorrow! Glad you made it out for a 6.6 mile walk and that the legs, hip and feet were all fine. I hope your wife has a safe trip!

Vicky- Nah! I am totally looking forward to it! :cloud9: Deep down I wanted to go anyway so you just helped me make the decision to just do it! Thanks for the movie suggestions! Oh, did you end up doing the acupuncture after all? LOL that’s funny the guy commented on the sugar. Good luck on your half this weekend!!! :cheer2:

Kipp- Glad you had a nice day to run outside this week! How was the expo?

Kimberly- I’m glad you’ve been feeling good since the half and that your 5 mile run went well!

Dave- Good luck on your half this weekend! Safe trip!:cheer2:

Mike- Good luck on EEC this weekend!!:cheer2:

Saylan- Good luck on your half marathon!:cheer2:

AFM, DH and I both got up at 4am this morning to go run. I am really proud of us because we fell off that wagon a few weeks ago and are trying to get back on. We decided to try out our new Brooks nightlife jackets and run outside (which by the way I am really happy with the jackets). When DH let the dog out to check the weather it was calm and not raining. And of course when we got outside 5 minutes later and started running, it started raining. So we ran about 3.4 miles in the rain which progressed to moderate rain pretty quickly. Finally, the rain got heavy so we decided to finish the last couple miles on TM at his work because by that time our shoes were wet from accidentally running into puddles we couldn’t see because it was so dark. We didn’t want to be any more miserable by getting completely drenched. So we ran a couple miles on the TM and then turned around and ran home. Of course when we went to run home it had completely stopped raining and hasn’t rained since. But all in all it was a good run so other than the rain deciding to come only when we were running, no complaints!

We are 2 weeks away from the Portland RnR half and weekend trip. I’m looking forward to it!

Have a great weekend team!!

Just wanted to drop in quickly to wish all racers the best of luck this weekend.

Vicky and Rebecca: If you go to your expo, be sure to stop at the PEI Marathon booth! Their FB page says they are at the Goodlife and are having a draw for 2 free race entries and accommodation (guess you have to get here yourself!)

D'oh! Totally missed that :( I'll have to go and get myself a 6/49 ticket instead LOL

Regina: I am super impressed with getting up at 4am for a run. What time do you go to bed the night before one of those runs? I will likely need to start doing the same thing this summer when my evenings will be occupied with kids’ soccer and baseball.

Kim: I don’t think anyone mentioned marathon weekend dining possibilities other than “we gotta have Tonga Toast”. If anyone wants my vote or suggestion, I really enjoyed ohana and Whispering Canyon during my last trip….but am open to try anything.

Kimberley: I agree, seeing my kids at the end of a race is very motivational, but definitely wouldn’t want to pick them up either! Yes, I have also found a nice easy runs couple days after a race do wonders for your recovery.

Rick: I had a similar funk that you seem to be going through. Maybe I was getting burned out, but the flu I got that put me on the shelf for 10 days was a blessing in disguise and allowed me to recharge my batteries and come back stronger than ever. Hopefully the rest you are getting will do the same for you.

Vicky: Congrats on the Goodlife finish. Considering the health issues you were having, it was a great time. I really think the 2:00 mark could fall once you get back to 100%. To answer your questions, 16 miles was my longest run until today when I went 18. And I have not been able to master eating while running hard either…it is a real PITA! It takes about a full minute to chew and shallow one bite. That is definitely one thing I enjoy about taking walk breaks. I think in the April thread you asked about kayak or canoe for my relay. Fortunately, we were able to reserve a kayak, which are much faster and efficient. Last time, we registered late and were stuck with a canoe.

AFM: Busy past few days for me fitness wise.
Friday: took the day off work, decided to go to the University outdoor track and try Yasso 800 workout. For those not familiar, it involves running 800 meters (1/2 mile) very fast, then a light jog recovery. This is repeated 10 times. Apparently, if you have a goal marathon time, you can use the Yasso 800 workout to gauge if you are in “shape” to get the goal time. It was a great workout, but I am kind of skeptical how a speed workout can determine performance in a race that centers on endurance above anything else.

Saturday: About 8:15am I was surfing the Internet and saw that a local shoe store was hosting a 5K race, beginning at 9am. So on a whim, off I went for my first ever 5K race. I did not know what to expect as I have never really timed myself for that distance, but wanted to finish under 23 minutes. Ended up finishing at 22:59!

Sunday: Went for my longest run yet - 18 miles. Gave the 10:1 run/walk thing a try again. Went pretty well, but last few miles were pretty tough…my legs were like jelly. Funny thing is, despite the painful finish, I had one of the quickest recoveries ever after a long run as by supper time I was thinking I could actually do another short run.

No super long run next weekend, will be starting my taper for the Blue Nose ½ marathon the following weekend.

Have a good week everyone,
Robbie

Heat Games

The Panda Endurance race Walking Team has just returned from doing the Indianapolis Half Marathon. It turned out to be a lesson in not being invincible, for me. We went to do the 5K and then immediately after that we crossed to the start of the half for a total distance of 16.2 miles. What happened to me had nothing to do with the race, it was awesome and I highly recommend it.

We drove up on Friday so we could relax, get to bed early and be well rested on race morning. That worked great and we had a good dinner at a place called Champps. The next morning I got up, had some coffee and took a hot shower to wake up and get loosened up for the race. The hot shower helped loosen up my calves and injured left Achilles tendon. I had a couple of granola bars and met one of my team mates and headed out. We were about a mile from the start so the easy walking there helped me loosen up my Achilles even more. We got to our starting area and after about 20 min of gentle stretching we were off on the first leg of our dual adventure.

It took a mile or so for me to get into a comfortable race walking stride and that left tendon was just a minor ache. After that I felt good and the remainder of the 5K went great. We finished in about 39 min which is what we had planned as a good warm up for the half. Sally was waiting for us with our new race bibs and we changed them out. We met another team member at the transition area and we all three went over and jumped into the mass of athletes doing the half.

It was starting to get hot and the race officials had posted warming signs about the heat and humidity danger. I wasn't worried the heat had never bothered me and I planned to drink the sports drink at every aid station to stay hydrated. That didn't work out as well as I'd hoped since the sports drink and water stations were separate. But I did manage to drink something at each station.

Mile 5 I stepped in a pot hole when I was passing a group of slower runners and walkers. That hurt and it was a couple of miles before I was able to walk it off. Then we went to the race track where they have the Indy 500 and got to race on the track for the next 2.5 miles. I was starting to get really hot and by mile 10 I was running out of steam big time. I told my team member I was going to have to back off the pace for a bit. I stopped at the next sports drink station and got two full cups and walked slower while I drank it. I started feeling better and picked up the pace and headed on to the finish. I crossed the line and went through and got my medal, a bottle of water and a couple of cookies and staggered over to the "K" area to meet my group. By the time I got there I was very dizzy. I just dropped everything and sat down. I ate my cookies and drank the water and just sat there, till the rest of my group arrived. I tried to stand and was so dizzy that I couldn't go. I had to just lay flat for a few minutes before I could get up.

I was very close to going into hyporthermia. I hadn't trained in the heat yet this year since all my training walks are in the early morning before it got hot. The high heat and humidity took it's toll on me and taught me a lesson. I won't take it for granted like that again. Just because I have been an endurance athlete for about 40 years didn't make me imune to the dangers of over heating. After I got back to the hotel Sally made me a recovery drink that we had got samples of at the Expo and then a good nap helped a lot. I was finally able to think more clearly and over dinner my team mate and I discussed what had happened. A warning sign that I was having trouble was that even though I was moving along well I was not not acting normally. I was uncharacteristicly bad tempered with people blocking the road and doing other minorly irritating things. I had also stopped talking a lot like I normally do during a race, I was just zoning and in my own world.

Another sign something was wrong was that I was getting minor cramping in my arms legs and back. When I finally stopped at the k pole I started getting worse cramps in my legs.

I think I was very lucky that I didn't really get in trouble till I had already finished. If I had become dizzy like that during the race I could have had a nasty fall. This race taught us to take it more seriously if one of us starts acting out of character even if we are still moving along well.

Thanks for reading.

I'm starting out feeling pretty good today. I have a busy one ahead to. I'm going to the track for an easy workout, then a follow up with the doctor and then off to work. The TriCare folk approaved my PT so I get up to 25 visits to the PT clinc to work my achillies issue.

I should be able to beat this achillies issue within a month and be pain free so I can race and train better. YEA!!!

I have been gone for a few days so not sure how everyone is doing, hope everyone is feeling good and training well.

Respect the heat and hydrate well.

Happy Monday team! Congrats to Dave, Saylan and Mike on their races this weekend! I am working on a RR but basically I ran my half while sick. I don't really recommend it but it's done. I didn't get that PB but I'm okay with that. There will be other races!

Okay so for restaurants in January, I mean to put up a poll but had forgotten when I started the thread this month. I think we're all agreed on Kona Cafe for breakfast on Friday morning (Jan 11) so why don't we take a vote on dinner for Sunday night (Jan 13) . This year, we had gone to Chef Mickey's. They were good in that they accommodated a big group, had a variety of food, the characters were there and was close to MK so we could hit the parks afterward. I know there were complaints in the group about Chef Mickey's last year so these are my suggestions for this year:

Whispering Canyon Cafe
Cape May
Boma
Chef Mickey's

I tried to pick restaurants that were close to the parks or easily accessible by Disney transportation, that had a mix of different kinds of foods and potentially close to the theme parks. Dave mentioned Boma to me a while ago so I threw it in as well and Chef Mickey's is in there in case anyone likes it :)

Personally my vote is for Whispering Canyon Cafe because they have an all you can eat option as well as menu items. That way no one is pressured to eat until they explode. And they have the fun servers which is kind of like having characters and they're close to MK so we can park hop afterward.

I'll put up the poll so we can all vote. Let me know what you think! I will be back in a little bit to catch up :)

Have a great day everyone! :wave2:

Wow Vicky, those are some tough choices. Two of them I ate at during my last trip (and enjoyed), and the other two were on my ADR list, but reluctantly got dropped. Will have to give it some thought...

Just wanted to drop in quickly to wish all racers the best of luck this weekend.

I missed that too, due to well verious reasons but I was teary-eyed from almost-crying at the bib booth (story to come!). Darn it!

Regina - I'm not sure. DBF also said this weekend he doesn't think I can do it. :sad2: After the half I had this weekend, maybe they're right. :guilty:

Vicky manages to talk me into so many different things. She should work in sales. :thumbsup2 Way to go on going Goofy!

Vicky: I want to vote for two: Whispering Canyon and Boma. I'd prefer Boma, but I'm fine with Whispering too. I would point out that if you do the all-you-can-eat skillets though, they're family style. Tim and I didn't know that and ended up having to share our skillet.

Thanks for the team support guys! Sorry I couldn't respond earlier but the bf showed up at work on Friday and kidnapped me from 1pm onwards on a whirlwind surprise vacation to Niagara Falls! We had lunch with my parents are our favourite restaurant and then we were off to one of the best hotels with their top room. It was wonderful, I loved it.

Race report will be coming soon as I promised Rick more details to go with the pictures I posted on FB.

Race Report - Goodlife Fitness Toronto Half Marathon May 6, 2012

Pre-race: We got into town around 3:00-3:30 pm on Saturday and the expo was to close at 5:00. Unfortunately, the signage around the CNE was not very good and DBF ended up dropping me off on the other side of BMO Field and its parking lot from the building inside which the expo was to take place (since we didn't want him to pay the 14$ parking fee for 10 minutes worth of parking). Having no clue where to go, I asked the parking attendant and proceeded to cross the huge parking lot to the Direct Energy Centre (where the expo was). Of course, it was in the last hall in the building.

The line-ups were pretty long for the bib pick up, and the only size shirts they had left were women's XS and men's M. I went with XS since I figured it'd be the closest to fitting of the two. I hadn't planned to need the race shuttle to the start line when I registered and you weren't able to order tickets after the fact. Instructions were to buy them for 8$ at the expo if you needed one. So I asked about the shuttle tickets, and was promptly told they were sold out.

Not taking that for an answer, I got into another long line for registration changes and solutions. I got to the front and asked again. I was told they were sold out. I was really tired and worked up by this point, and I was about to start crying because I was now in a city I didn't know anything about being told to find my own way to a start line that ended up being over 30 minutes from the host hotel (which I had booked for the sole reason of using the shuttle). The lady at the registration desk looked like she didn't want a hysterical girl on her hands and stuck her head in the back. She came back, asked me if I was with anyone, and when I said no, she took my bib, turned around and when I got it back, it had a sticker for the shuttle from my hotel on it. I almost cried again (I was really, really tired) out of happiness.

I activated my bib and signed up for the Midsummer Night's Run 30K at the expo since they were giving out free hats. Keep in mind, DBF is circling the CNE waiting for me, so I rushed out, through the building, across the sea of parking lots and almost bowled over the Avengers. I guess they were going to the game at BMO Field but it was hilarious to see them in costume.

I found DBF and we left to check into our hotel. I got my late check-out time granted to 1:00 pm (only an hour but it proved vital!) and we were on the 28th floor with an amazing view of the CN tower.

In laying out my goody bag loot, I noticed there were no pins. I checked with Vicky, and sure enough, she hadn't got any either. Sold out shuttle and no pins to attach my bib to me... 2-0 so far expo organizers!

I checked with a volunteer at the lobby about what time the buses start and was told 6:00 am. The race instructions I found later said 6:30 and another racer had been told 5:30, so I opted to get up at 5:00, aim for shortly after 5:30 and pray there wasn't a line like there is a Disney.

Race Day: 2 alarms, 1 snooze button, and a wake-up call later, I was up by 5:10, dressed and in the lobby by 5:35. There was no one there at all. Another racer joined me, commenting that there is usually a line up that extends two blocks around the hotel for the buses.

That wasn't the case this year as my bus took off with 7-10 people on it at 5:45am (note: not 5:30 or 6:00, lol). We got dropped off at the start line around 6:30, so it was a decent distance from the hotel that I'm glad I didn't have to cab. I was annoyed they were 'sold out' and yet buses were running not even half full.

We were allowed to wait inside the civic building so I made use of the wall heaters and passed the time until the 8:30 start. The race itself wasn't too bad or too good. The first half was hard for me since there were some substantial hills, which I'm not used to. I'm also used to running in miles, so the kilometres were messing me up in terms of knowing where my pace was.

I took a couple pictures as we got near the last portion of it and entered the main part of the city. There was a lot of crowds and the city was much more fun to run through than Anaheim. This was the first time I'd listened to music while running but I was glad I had it. I had only 5 songs to choose from but that was better than nothing.

My calf seized up around KM 12 or so and I ran out of water around KM 14-15. I didn't want to rely on city water since they were using the fire hydrants to get it and usually water from other places makes me not well (and this was no exception later on in the day). I managed to lose a GU on the way too, somehow but I had 4 extra so I was glad I over-prepared.

The water stations were terribly executed where often they had run out at 1-2 of the first tables, regardless of whether it was water or gatorade. They couldn't stock it fast enough it seems and the order kept switching even though all pre-race info said water would always be first at the stations.

I ended up running the last bit just to offset the excess walking I did in the first part over the hills and I pulled into the finish in 2:28:12 (chip). Then came the even more disorganized finish area.

Post-Race:The medal holders had one hand for full and one hand for half finishers and there was a crowd around them as the physio tent was right behind them with a line going out the door. It was a chaotic mess in a cramped space.

As I'm sure Vicky will comment on, post-race water and gatorade was only available in cups (as you would get it on the race course), not in bottles, and on tables so that they were obscured by the crowd around them. They were also in the middle of the area, so people had to move around the crowd to get anywhere else.

There was a pen for family with 1 five foot wide opening but no info on what it was so a lot of racers went in there thinking it was the exit, myself included, only to have to try and squeeze your way back out. It took me almost 15 minutes to find anyone who even knew where the shuttles were and all they knew was the general direction.

No one seemed to know where the engraving plaques we had to prepay for were to be found, either, so I saw a few other runners also meandering around looking for the plaque pick up. Chaos doesn't begin to describe it. Bag check was stupid, in my opinion, but since I didn't use it, I can't really comment on it.

Off I marched across another parking lot, up a hill, over the bridge I was sent to, only to find no signs, no volunteers, and no shuttles. I was back in the parking lot I got lost in trying to get to the expo. I wandered around there until I teamed up with a few others looking for the shuttles and we followed the road hoping for buses. When we found them, they weren't labelled and so we went from bus to bus until we found one going to our hotel.

We had to wait about 20 minutes for it to 'fill up' (15 people is not filling!) and we were on our way. We were on the bus about 20 minutes when we encountered a road closure and were detoured. 2 blocks into the detour, the road was closed again and our bus was told to make a U-turn (back towards the first detour). I finished the race around 11:00 am. By 12:20, I was back at the intersection of the first detour where three lanes were trying to merge into 1 and my bus driver trying to get instructions on where to go to get us to the hotel. Keep in mind, my original check out time was 12:00 and I have 40 minutes to check out with my 'late' check out.

I hopped out of the bus in the middle of the road with pretty much everyone else and decided to hoof it the 3-4 blocks to the hotel. :headache: This only added to what turned out to be a very brutal set of sunburns. I made it to the hotel room by 12:35 with just enough time for a quick cool shower and to pack. Checked out by 1:06 and was on the road.

Summary: In the end, the race was less than great for me. I wouldn't run it again, I don't think. It was like this was the first time it was ever run, and I expected a lot more than the result. Too many things were mishandled, and I think they forgot that people from outside Toronto would be running it too as support/signage was minimal at the best of times and non-existent everywhere else.

I ran the race to hang out with my team mates, mostly, but circumstances sunk that, unfortunately. :sad1: I think that's the only thing that could have saved this race from being a complete bust. I hope my other upcoming non-Disney races restore my faith, otherwise I might have to stick to just Disney in the future.
