Hakuna Matata - Dashing Through December

Good Morning Team!

Vicky - We have sprayed the spruce trees with something that was supposed to help, but I did not notice any difference between the years we did spray and didn’t spray. Our spruces trees in the front of the house suffered our first year here when we did not know we were supposed to water in the winter, they both have some holes in the lower branches, but all have done well since we started the watering. We have to water because it is so dry and windy and there is no snow cover to protect the roots. It does take me about 2 - 3 hours to water all the trees and bushes.

Kimberly - Have fun, sounds like fun!

Kipp - Congrats on your corral!

Rick - Good luck on your race!

AFM - It did not snow overnight as predicted, it has been really dry here and we could use any kind of precipitation. Our cycling club has planned a Christmas light bike ride for next weekend, it should be fun if weather cooperates.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Had a great race today! Ran the Half in 2:21:17 which is my second fastest finish time. I hadn't planned on running it hard but it just felt good!

Next weekend will be my 20-miler. Then it's taper time! :)

Good morning all!!

I hope weekends went well!

Rick ~ Congrats on the race!

Lynn ~ The bike rids sounds fun and pretty!!

AFM ~ Did an 8 mile run this weekend using Generation U Can, and I really liked it. I'll try it on my 20 this weekend, but assuming it works well there, I'll use that rather than gels, chews and PowerAde for the marathon. I've calmed down a good bit since Friday - being a teacher, I was really a mess. I put the messiness into action at school though and know the exact triangle I need to make sure my kids are in so that we can't be seen from the door. The scariest part with my kids is they CAN'T be quiet, even if I tell them to. So should God forbid anything happen, we'll just have to lock the door, huddle, and pray.

A couple of things with future races...

I got into the Cherry Blossom 10 Miler, so that will be April 7!! I'm psyched for that one!

And then I've decided to take a leap of faith regarding Hartford. I've extended my hotel reservation (to avoid having to get on a train or bus right after) and have contacted the race about upgrading to the full marathon. It's a 6-hour time limit, which is why I hadn't initially signed up for it. But having talked to some running club friends at a non-running club party on Friday, then talking via facebook with another friend, the consensus was I've got the ability to do it - like in Chicago I was on the path to go well sub-6 but then had some physical issues stemming from hitting a divot in the road - and with more focused training (and doing a lot of that on paths with hills as opposed to along the Hudson, which is flat) I should be able to do it. So I'm stepping out on faith and going for it. (I've also been assured by someone who has cheered and supported people to super-6 finishes that the finish line IS kept open for everyone to finish and everyone who finishes gets a time, but that I may just have to supply my own fuel, so that makes me feel a little better.)

I hope everyone has a great day!!

There is a way to do that. I know Vicky has a Garmin and uses intervals. Perhaps she can tell you how to set that up.

Kipp - Which Garmin do you have? The way I set intervals is going Training>Workouts>Intervals

Then you can set your run/rest intervals to whatever you want. You can go by distance, time or a combination of the two. I usually set my intervals for time and I usually have the reps go to 99. Not that I'll ever need to use all 99 but it makes sure that I never run out.

This is how I do it on the 610. My friend has a 305 so if you need help with that, I can ask to borrow his watch to have a look at it for you.

Congrats Rick in your run and congrats to you snd Dug getting in your cherry blossom ten mile race! And you can do the marathon dug!

I had my first DNS this weekend. It was for a 5k through a winter wonderland. My DS was at a birthday party that ran an hour late. I didn't have the heart to take him out early from something he was having a blast at so I could do something I wanted to do, especially since I had a whole weekend away last weekend. Just a reminder that family is more important than races. But it was very weird not to do it on such a beautiful night but he deserved it.

Planning on my 20 this Saturday, but if it snows like they are saying, I'll do it the 26th.

I have a 405CX. I was making workouts from the web, but found out that that is very limited in what it can generate. Garmin has an actual program called Training Center that you can download that allows you to do much more in generating a workout. I now have generated a workout that will do the 4min/90second interval until I do 13.5 miles :) I may boost that up just a bit more just to make sure that I'm not off in total distance.

I also have the option to make it do that interval until I hit the lap button.

Before grocery shopping yesterday I stopped by Goodwill and finally found a tossable light jacket for the Half! :)

It's actually pretty decent looking. Funny thing is, someone from the Santa Hustle was looking at stuff in the same rack. Planning for their next race, I bet :)

Good morning team.

It's getting close is everyone ready?

Kip that's a good idea getting a throw down jacket, get some cheap gloves as well. I do that also go to Goodwill and buy my throw downs.

Make sure to take extra good care of your feet the next couple of weeks, trim nails lotion, get rid of any rough spots that are causing extra friction.

Have an awesome day y'all.

Good Morning Team!

Dave - Hi!

Kimberly - I agree that you son was more important than a 5K race!

Kipp - Goodwill is well known as a source of throwaway clothes for races. Dollar Store is a good source for cheap gloves.

Beth - Good luck with the races, we all have confidence in you to complete the marathon in the prescribed time!

AFM - Finally got to the basement for 45 min on the spin bike. Too windy to walk dogs yesterday, snow and wind in the forecast for next 2 days.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Hi team! The time is just flying by! Someone pointed out to me that it's Christmas next week! I think I sort of knew that in the back of my mind but wow!

Lynn - Watering the trees makes sense once you explained that there's no snow to cover and protect the roots. It's something that I would not have thought about either. Do you have a bike in the basement just for indoor use or do you have those trainers that you can for your outdoor bike?

Dave - Good advice feet advice! I still have my throwaway shirts from last year. I also bring back the space blankets they give you at the end of the race back and use those to walk to the start. I'm definitely feeling ready. I need to start stretching my Achilles more so that I don't aggravate it further.

Kipp - It's funny what people will throw away. I saw people using and throwing away some pretty nice looking running jackets last year. Go figure. But maybe it's stuff they've shrunk out of? I have some UA stuff that no longer fits me and would work well as a throwaway but I just can't bring myself to

Kimberly - Sorry to hear about your DNS but it sounds like you skipped it for the right reasons. Hope your 20 miler goes well this weekend! I'm hoping to get mine in on Saturday and hoping the stars are lined up - good weather, no aches and pains etc.

Beth - Congrats on making it into the Cherry Blossom 10 miler! Sounds like a great race! Love going to DC! Let me know the date of your marathon in Hartford and I'll add it to our race calendar. Hope your 20 miler goes well too!

Rick - WTG on your half time! I'm looking forward to tapering as well!! Looks like several of us will be running a 20 miler this weekend!

AFM - I had a busy weekend! Saturday I was out for my 13 miler. I had some weird Achilles tendon pain around mile 9 and ended up hobbling home. I only did 11.85 miles :( My massage therapist looked at it afterward and said it was swollen and suggested I take the weekend off to rest. I gave it a good stretch with my chiro yesterday and it seems to be feeling better. I think I will give it an extra day to rest - because it's still a bit tender today.

I went shopping on the weekend and hit the Cheesecake Factory with a friend. Even though I ate light, I still had trouble finishing the cheesecake slice. It was huge!! I guess I'm losing my touch but it was probably for the best LOL

Tonight will probably be another night of rest - will ice and stretch my achilles and try to get out for Wednesday. Hope everyone else is feeling rested and staying injury free :)

Yeah, for $4.00, I really cannot beat that for the throw down jacket.

I have a pair of running gloves, and they fit nice into my belt pouch if I don't need them. I found a pair of Nike/Livestrong gloves on sale last year that were actually my size.

Hi everybody

Well my bone scan showed no stress fracture, so Goofy is back on!
Doctor thinks it is a lateral meniscus tear, but after saying it could be ITBS then a stress fracture, who knows if they got it right this time! Anyway, he said I can still run in Disney...it may be painful, but he says I can't make the injury much worse. Eventually, I will need an MRI and possibly arthroscopic surgery.

So now I am faced with picking up my training again...just when everyone else will be starting to taper! I went for a very easy 6.5 miler right after being cleared by the doctor yesterday. Had a few twinges in knee, but otherwise felt not too bad. Maybe will try a 15-16 miler this weekend.

Hope everyone has a good rest of week,
Robbie

Good Morning Team!

Vicky - We have a spin bike in the basement, we are actually looking to sell it and replace it with a “tour de France bike trainer”, which we think will give us a better workout. It can be connected to google maps and give and actual route with inclines and declines. Hope your Achilles feels better soon!

Robbie - Great news! Take it easy on the training, remember it is better to be undertrained and healthy than injured! (I believe that is one of Dave’s favorite sayings, I have heard it often enough! LOL)

AFM - Because snow was in last nights forecast, I decided the packages had to go out yesterday rather than today, so I spent from 8am to 5pm wrapping presents, making banana bread and packaging presents. At 5pm, I headed to the post office with 15 boxes, got in line before the 5:30 closing time and got them shipped off. It was a good thing I did, by 10pm last night, we had 7 inches of snow. This morning we have about 10 inches of snow, and now it is beginning to blow, so it will start drifting. It was really pretty when it was falling last night.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

great news Robbie -so happy for you!

so running has been the pits this week. started with the DNS on saturday - for good reasons, but a DNS none the less. then raining monday, pouring actually, so going to do dreadmill but four year old woke up early so couldn't run bc he was a basket case. pouring again yesterday so 3.1 on the dreadmill - couldn't do more bc being driven crazy by it (hate the dreadmill). although nice day today, couldn't run outside bc dh in nyc for work so was going to run dreadmill again but four year old up early again, again a basketcase, so couldn't run. yep, only 3.1 miles this week after 20 last week. hoping to run 5 th and friday if weather holds. want to do 20 on saturday but weather doesn't look like it's going to cooperate so am thinking of doing it on 12/24, yep christmas eve morning, then a party in the afternoon and midnight mass at yep, 11:30 pm, then putting out santa presents, then collapsing and up at zero thirty when four year old gets up to see whwat santa brings.

can't wait until training for marathon is done.:rolleyes1

Great news!! No stress fracture!!

I am looking forward to seeing you out there at WDW in January! Just take it easy on the return to training. From 6.5 to 15 is a big jump... Is that a good idea? I know the weeks are quickly disappearing from the calendar, but given the training base you have already built up, you might not really need to jump into high mileage at this point. You might just need to run enough to remind the legs what they have been trained for this whole year. :)

Look at it from a different perspective. You ran 20 miles last week which means this week should be a cut-back week anyways. So just accept this week as a cut-back week and focus on sleep and rest. Then next week, if you want to throw in another 20, go for it. Your body will be rested and better ready for the effort.

But I share the feeling... I am really getting tired of all the training this year. I want fo get to January SO BAD so I can 'get it done' and have fun at the parks! :)

This week has not started off very motivating as far as running goes. Monday was a well deserved Rest Day. But I worked so late that night that I only got 5 hours of sleep before the alarm went off Tuesday morning. I was too tired to get up so I did what my body told me to do -- I went back to sleep for two more hours. Then today, my morning was too busy to get my run in so I am going to try to hit the TM after work for a quick run. We are supposed to get a big snowstorm tomorrow, so not sure how that will work out.

Sunday is my 20-miler. So, I can look at this as more 'rest and recovery' time for the body before I have to churn out those 20 miles in the cold winter morning on Sunday, right? :)

Two things of note I want to share:
1) I have decided to run a special Half Marathon to raise funds to help the families recovering from the Sandy Hook Elementary tragedy. This 'virtual race' can be found on Active.COM. I have more information on my blog site. The run is scheduled for December 29th, no matter the weather. If you feel moved to help/contribute, you have my thanks.

2) RunDisney has decided that in addition to the 5K race, to add a 10K race to their Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend! AND.... they have created an inaugural "Dumbo Double Dare" challenge (similar to Goofy) where you run the 10K on Saturday and the Half on Sunday and you get a third "Dumbo" medal!!! This is AWESOME! So of course, I have to sign up for the Dumbo Double Dare! That's like two Goofies in a single calendar year.

Mind=Blown!

Good Morning Team!

Kimberly - Sorry you have had such a terrible week. Pixie Dust for it to get better! Sounds like you will need a nap on Christmas Eve.

Rick - Great info on the Disneyland Half - if we have our knee replacements by then, that might be a good way to work back in to running (for Scott) and walking for me.

Robbie - Rick is right, take it easy on the training. Pixie Dust that knee will hold out, Scott and I have both been thru the meniscus tear and surgery.

AFM - I braved the outside weather yesterday - about 5F and 25mph wind - for wind chill of too far below 0 - to walk dogs to the mailbox for the mail and daily paper (it was horrible). Also spend some time shoveling walks. The wind has blown the snow around so that now there are big areas no longer snow covered, and some nice drifts. Today we have blizzard warnings, in spite of sunshine - the wind is picking up even more, now it is 30-40mph, so yesterdays snow is now blowing and creating whiteouts and drifted roads. I am holed up inside and have no plans of going farther than the mailbox. I also did get in about 30 min on the spin bike.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!
