Hakuna Matata - Amazingly Hot August

:cheer2: Weekend Racers :cheer2:

Good luck this weekend Robbie! Hope you have great weather and a fantastic race! Can't wait to hear how it goes :)

August
26 - Cobequid Trail half marathon - Robbie

Arghh... the boards just ate my post, so this will be short.

I'm doing ok. I'm ready for the half to get here, I've lost my motivation a bit lately. But, I actually had a pretty good run last night.

The heat finally broke this week, so the weather has been much better. I've started checking the extended forecasts for race weekend and they're projecting highs in the upper 80s. But, forecasts that far out aren't very reliable so just have to wait and see.

PD to those who need it! Have a good day!

Emily

Popping in again to say HI!!!!!

I am so far behind with everyone again I will never catch up. Thank goodness I chat with most if not all of you on FB or I wouldn't have a clue what is going on.

First I have to say congrats Eva, so excited for you how have you been feeling?

Off to hit the TM for an hour but will try an get back on later today.

Have a good one all

Happy Monday!

Eva: Looking forward to seeing photos of the new princess once she arrives. I love her name.

Mary: Did you manage to squeeze in a TM session?

Kim: Run Happy, Run Sleepy, Run Grumpy, Run Dopey! Wow! I can't wait for your race report!

Robbie: Thanks for posting the article link. I agree with the committee as well. I encourage my children to be active and participate in team sports; however, I've stopped short having them try out for the traveling competitive teams because of the sheer amount of stress the training can put on their bodies at their young age. Of course, my girls aren't showing strong interest in any sport. Who knows how I would handle it if they possessed a natural ability? To run a Disney marathon you must be at least 18; for the half it is 14. How did your race go?

AFM: My mother is out of the hospital and so our schedules are returning closer to normal. She has PT in her home, which helps me maintain my own schedule while caring for her. My back pain has improved but I now have pain in my neck after runs. Clearly I'm doing something wrong. I'm headed back to PT or to a chiro if it hasn't improved by Wednesday.

Enjoy the week, everyone!

Well my fifth half marathon is in the books as I ran the Cobequid Trail half marathon this past Sunday in Truro, Nova Scotia. My previous HM PR was 1:50:19, my goal was to get sub 1:48. I ended up with 1:49:05 and placed 29th out of 81 participants.

The course was a mostly flat out and back on a crusher dust trail. Not overly scenic at all as it was lined with small hedgerow type trees.

I was debating participating in this race all summer, basically I was going to wait to see how warm it was going to be…I was not going to bother if it was going to be too hot and I would just be miserable. The Tuesday before the race, the forecast for Sunday was 21C/69F. Unfortunately, he day before the race (after I registered), it had changed to 27C/81F. After the race the temp stated on the radio was 30C/86F! The small trees sheltered this trail race, so it blocked any cooling breeze but did not block the sun from beating down on the runners.

Anyways, I wanted to treat this HM as a trial run for my first full in October…that is for the first time, I wanted to follow a specific pacing plan to get me to my goal of sub 1:48. My plan involved starting slower for the first two miles, then speed up for a steady pace of 8:10 m/m for miles 2-11, then see what happens in the final 2.1 miles…but I did budget an extra 45 seconds or so in those final 2.1 miles for a possible fade. Looking at my Garmin data, I was one second ahead of my planned time at the end of mile 12, but the final 1.1 miles took over a minute longer than I expected. Truthfully, it was the worst I felt in the final stretch of my five half marathons. My breathing was very labored, I could feel my heart rate skyrocketing, and I got side stitches for the first time in years. It was a real struggle even to maintain my long slow training run pace! I am pretty sure the issue was dehydration. I brought two 8 oz bottles of Gatorade in my fuel belt, but for some reason, in the second half of the race, drinking the stuff and eventually even thinking about drinking it was turning my stomach and making me feel nauseous. To make matter much worse, the course was an out and back and on the way back, the rest stations ran out of water and just had Gatorade!

Overall, although I did not meet my goal time, and the final stretch was miserable; I did get a new PR by over a minute and I did learn a few lessons in regards to fueling and hydration.

Good Morning Team!

Kim - Hope you had a good workout on the TM!

Robbie - Very interesting question you are posing. I think the marathon committee put the age limit on for liability reasons, at least in the US, people think it is their right and responsibility to sue someone if there is any injury. They probably never expected someone so young to even want to enter the marathon, and so there were not the age restrictions before.

Elizabeth - Glad your mother is doing better. PD for your neck!

Emily - Write your posts in a word document first, then copy and paste - that way, when the computer eats your post, you can just copy and paste it again.

AFM - We had a great time at the USA Pro Challenge, it was so exciting to watch the racers in person rather than on TV. We had paid for special seating for the Time Trial im Denver, which put us up close and personal with the riders. We had SHADE, food, drinks, entertainment (band) and deluxe porta-pottys! After the race, we hung around the Garmin bus and got autographs from several of the riders! Not much exercise over the weekend. We are now packing for DL.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Good morning, everyone,

Robbie: How long did it take you to recover? Do you think it was just the higher temperature that day or did you not hydrate properly before?

Lyn: When do you leave for DL?

AFM: The pain in my neck is gone. :cool1: My long run is tomorrow morning and I'm looking forward to it.

Good morning team. Glad it's not January yet because I'm sure not ready for it. After my state trials on Oct 6th I need to really start getting ready for that marathon. I am ready for some good food and company though.

I had to cut my training schedule even further to try and get this darn achilles healed. It keeps getting better then crashing again. Two steps forward one step back.

Glad everyone is doing good, we are going to have a lot of Goofies this year, and some twice goofies. I'm glad I just signed for the marathon, no way I could be ready for both.

Hi team! Sorry, I've just been busy trying to tidy up before leaving this Friday. I have to say that it feels funny taking a Disney trip and not having to pack a set of summer and a set of winter clothes. I guess I'm just so used to going in January :)

Dave - Same here! Looking forward to seeing everyone again! How are your physio treatments going? I feel the same way about injuries but keep up with your PT visits and exercises. It will get better! Lots of pixiedust: heading your way!

Elizabeth - Glad to hear your mom is out of the hospital! Good luck with your run tomorrow! I'm glad your neck is feeling better! Was it something that just went away by itself or did you have to do a treatment for it? The ToT race is coming up! How are you feeling about it?

Lynn - Sounds like you had an awesome time at the Pro Challenge. Is that race held over several days like Tour de France? Can't wait to see you and Scott in DL! What was the name of the place that you told me about with the fresh beignnets?

Robbie - Congrats on your PB! Sorry to hear about the hydration and stomach issues :( That's no good that the aid stations ran out of water, especially on a hot day. Sounds like they didn't realize there would be an increased demand. You're probably pretty close to the front so I wonder what happened to everyone else is the back who needed water.

Kim - :wave2:

AFM - I spent the weekend tidying up and packing. I went out for a run on Sunday morning with the running group close to my house. I went with my friend from work and he wanted to run with the 4K group. They miscalculated their route and ended up running a *little* bit farther than they should have. Because of that, they walked for a good 30 minutes which isn't what I really wanted to do. They were all dying and drinking from their Fuel Belts. I was thinking, it's not that hot and it's not that bad. Oh well. I think once I get my marathon/Goofy training up and running, I probably won't be able to go out with them much anymore.

I had a great workout at the gym yesterday and it was my last session working with the chiro student before my chiro gets back from vacation. He suggested that I foam roll before going running and also in the morning.

Oh and I finally put up my race report for A Midsummer Night's Run. If you're interested, it's on my blog.

Have a great day everyone! :wave2:

Good Morning Team!

Vicky - Yes, the USA Pro challenge is a week long race. The beignets are at Brennens (?) New Orleans Kitchen - pretty much right in the middle of Downtown Disney. It will be great to see you also!

Dave - Good luck in your healing process!

Elizabeth - We are flying in on Thurs. to DL. Glad to hear your neck pain is gone!

AFM - Dogs got their walk this morning, but we are so far behind with packing and getting ready for our trip, that we did not get out for bike ride.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Hello team!

Vicky - The heat is a bigger concern in SoCal. It does get humid here but not like in other places, I think it's much more subtle. It looks like race start temps are going to be in the upper 60s.

Elizabeth - PD for you and your mom.

Eva - I love the name you've picked! When I was little I was a Sleeping Beauty fan and I really wished that my name was Aurora :)

Lynn - Yeah, I should use word. I knew I should've copied my post before hitting submit, but I didn't. Glad you had a good time in Denver.

Robbie - Congrats on your PB! Sorry to hear it didn't go well.

AFM - Went out to dinner with some coworkers tonight. I need to start getting organized for race weekend.

Have a good night everyone!

Emily

Hi!

Lyn, Emily, Regina, and Vicky: Safe travels. I'm looking forward to all the race reports. I never fail to learn something from them. Anyone running in costume?

Vicky: The neck pain subsided with rest.:thumbsup2 I'm feeling pretty good about the ToT. I'm not as fast as I hoped to be at this point but I'm feeling good enough to entertain the idea of running in a simple costume. Can't decide between Minnie or Elastigirl....

Long run tonight as I didn't have time this morning.

Enjoy the rest of your day, everyone!

Just finished my run. A slight twinge at mile 4 but otherwise, okay. :thumbsup2

Now to work on my speed!

Hello!

Elizabeth - Glad you are feeling better! I'm not running in costume. I am going to wear a running headband I made out of Minnie mouse ribbon.

Have a great day, everyone!

Emily

Go Team Go!

Have tons of fun at Disneyland!!! Can't wait to hear your race reports and pictures (especially of Cars Land)!

While you all are running the Half, I will be churning out an 18-miler. So I will be running with you in mind!

Just popping in to say hello from down under! Ken and I are in Australia. It's a business trip for him, but I told him long ago that if his international travels ever took him here, sign me up to go too! Haven't been able to do any running here yet as the location of our first hotel wasn't conducive for that. We're changing hotels today, so we'll see what the next one is like. I will say that the bed here if FIRM, so my back has been sore each morning. Thank goodness I packed the Biofreeze!

Good luck to everyone running at Disneyland. Hard to believe that this time last year I was getting ready to go there myself. :)

Hi team! We just got out of the Expo, did not see any of our team, but other Wishers there. Hope to catch up with more of you tomorrow.
