:simba: Hakuna Matata Team Bios :simba:

Windwalker, aka Dave aka Panda- I'm 60 and live in a small town in Kentucky. I don't run I walk, race walk actually. I have qualified for another shot at the National Senior Olympics. Married to Sally.

es45 aka Elizabeth- I'm 42 and married with 2 young daughters. I ran my first 13.1 in the 2011 Princess Half.

Pudge The Fish, aka Emily- My DH and I will be doing the DL half in Sept. This will be our first half marathon. I still consider myself new to running, though I've done 2 5k (including the 2009 DL 5k) and one 10k.

Villians_Rock, aka Eva – I am 31 years old, married to Jordan (proud WISH supporter) and have just recently had our first baby, Gage. We currently live near Cleveland, OH. I'm a full time staffing coordinator for Continental Airlines and my hubby sells Harley Davidsons. I ran my first race in 2007 and have since ran 5Ks, 10Ks, one half marathon and completed the Disney Full Marathon in 2009. Before the baby, I was most comfortable running and training at a half marathon distance.

GirltheGecko aka Hope- I grew up in the Pittsburgh area. When I was a teenager, I was heavily into martial arts, unfortunately due to school and time, I had to quit. I met Nick, moved to NH, and I gained some weight. I watched my mother struggle with obesity all her life, so Nick's family and I decided to work at trying for a half marathon at WDW.

flipflopmom, aka Taryn – I will be 35 on Sept. 5. I am a Kindergarten Teacher, working on my master's degree in my "spare” time. Married for 12 years, have 2 girls. Oldest is 10, and a competitive gymnast. Her gym is 45 minutes away, so I spend a lot of time on the road. Youngest is 3, and a tons of fun! I haven't run a race yet, but looking for a 5K.

LynnG, aka Lynn, (of Lynn and Scott)- 60 years old, retired, we are both Disneyholics. We have been members of DVC since it started. I am a walker, I used to try to run, but knee surgery last August which I am still trying to recover from, I only walk now. I have done several half marathons, mostly Disney ones. I have 2 malamutes that are my walking companions at home.

MaryJ aka Mary- I am 53 years old, and live in a small town in Southwestern Indiana. I will be married to DH (Ken) for 34 years in July. We have 3 daughters and 2 granddaughters. I walk/run my races. I did my first big race (WDW Half) when I was 52. Before that I had done only a few 5K's, mostly walking.

Motomiker, aka Mike – I have lived in and around Lake in the Hills Illinois. I have worked in the grocery business for almost 20 years. Married in 2008 to my wife (Liz). One son (Robert), working on baby number two. I was diagnosed with colon cancer in the fall of 2009 and had surgery. I am still cancer free! My other interests are varied: Disney nut, Disney pins collector, love movies (mostly Sci-fi), scrapbooking, travel, a New England Patriots fan, and 5ks . I did my first adventure race recently, and am planning some more.

Nikkilala, aka Nikki- Married to Ryan at WDW in 2007. Currently a Physical Therapist Assistant student graduating in 2012. Is a wogger (walker with a little jogging mixed in) Lives in South West Michigan where she was born and raised! Loves Disney and will do anything for an excuse to travel there, including a half marathon

Saylan – I'm from the frosty north of Canada. I'm very new to running (officially started October 14, 2010). I'm training for the Disney Princess 1/2 and it'll be my first official marathon of any length. I'm a Disney addict (been 16 times). I figured if anything can motivate me to run it would be Disney. I live with my partner (and Disney virgin) and a demon of a cat.

piglet24, aka Regina- I grew up in Idaho and married my “birthday buddy”, Kyle, in 2006. I started running to help manage some stress about a year and a half ago, and have continued because I enjoy it. Of course, I love Disney and am always happy to have another reason to go!

DisneyGerry, aka Gerry - Lives in Celebration, FL, transplant from MD after numerous vacations to visit central FLA. Trying to kick up my race schedule this year starting with the Disney Half in January. Play and work in the theme park corridor

bunnyfoo, aka Vicky - My name is Vicky and I live in Toronto, Canada. I started running back in 2008 so I could lose weight become more active. I wasn't into low carb diets but it seemed like a lot of runners had great abs AND they ate carbs. I thought "Hey I can do that!" :goodvibes I started as an indoor treadmill runner and eventually worked my way outside and signed up for my first race - the Minnie 15K. As they say, the rest is history! I have had my share of bumps, bruises and sprains but have had a lot of fun along the way and have met a lot of great people including everyone on Hakuna Matada! Three years later, running, working out and healthy eating have all become a part of my lifestyle. My other interests are movies, reading, road trips and baking!

rubato, aka Tandy - Hi. My name is Tandy and I’m the mother of a fabulous 12 year old preteen son. :lovestruc I’ve been married to Frank (a non runner) for 18 years. I’m a full time student, going back to school to become a nurse. I have always run for fitness, but it wasn’t until my impending
40th birthday that I decided to become a distance runner. I love the miles and can’t wait to run my first ultra-marathon someday.

RunRookie, aka Rick - My name is Rick and I live in Crystal Lake, IL. I am married with three children (one 13yr old still at home). I am a new runner, having started in April 2011. My initial goals were to lose 160 pounds, improve my overall fitness, and to live a healthier lifestyle. Since then, I have run 15 races and lost 110 pounds! I am a big fan of Star Trek, Star Wars, Sci-Fi in general, Disney, photography, music, movies, and technology/gadgets. And I keep a fitness blog at rickpeete.squarespace.com.

RadioFanatic, aka KimberlyI'm 39 mama of an almost 4 year old boy, will be 40 by the race; and was goaded into doing this past 1/2 by friends who knew I could do it although I hadn't run a minute in my life. I started training on May 1, 2011 by doing couch to 5k and the first day was miserable where even running that minute made me want to die. Since then, I've lost 70 pounds, ran the whole 1/2 and am looking forward to my new goal. I'm planning on doing a 1/2 in april and in september, my first full in october here locally and some other 10k and 15k runs in between and my second and most exciting full on the 20th anniversary at disney!

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!!

How was everyones New Years celebration? I personally, was...working!

Vicky~ Thank you for being a great team captain all year and keeping track of all of our races and goings on. You are great at it! :thumbsup2

Tandy~ I'm sorry to hear that your Dad had another stroke. I hope that he recovers well. PD to him and your family. Your trip to Europe sounds really exciting!

Lynn~ we got your high winds here today! 50mph gusts! When I got home from work this morning, I had to take alot of the Christmas lights and decorations off the house because I was worried about them blowing away!

AFM~ I am finally getting excited about heading to WDW. I am way undertrained and will be lucky to fininish the full, but I will give it my best shot. I am after those medals!
Its been awhile since I posted here again. For those of you who I happen to not be friends on FB with (yet!), my CT scan for cancer came back negative! :woohoo::woohoo: Thank for all your well wishes, prayers, and PD! You will never know how much it means to me and my family!
I can't believe how long it has been since I posted. One day seems to blend into another...
Christmas was fun here. I got two new pairs of running shoes. Saucony Omnis and Brooks Adrenline GTXs. The Brooks are GoreTex and waterproof for trail running. I thought they might be good for the snow. Santa got Liz some Aero bars and some clipon pedals and shoes for her tri-bike. She is very happy! Robert got a usual assortment of toys.
I cannot wait to get the next three nights of work over with. I had Christmas eve off will work straight through until I leave for FL on Thursday. Because Robert is home from school, I sleep only two hours in the morning and about three in the evenings. I can't wait to get to a nice quiet hotel room!
I've had only a few training runs in the past few weeks. I met up with Rick for a few nice ones. It's really great having someone to pass the time with on the LSRs, time goes by so much quicker and the runs seem shorter. :goodvibes Thanks bud!

How has everyone done on their goals from last year? I wanted to run at least ten halves, one full, and get my weight down to 200 lbs. I never came close to the weightloss that I wanted but made the races.
I finished five 5ks including two adventure races, three 10 milers, one 15k, one 25k, fifteen half marathons, and two fulls. I think my medal count came to 29 for the year.
This year I really want to increase my speed and go for PR's and lose the bodyweight. Alot of my eating is stress driven, along with my schedule. If I can get that under control then I know I can run faster. Knowing that my CT scan came back good and the fact that we will be paying off some significant bills this year will also help reduce the stress factor. :upsidedow I will also have the motivation of trying to keep up with Rick. He is becoming a superstar.

I still have to pack, sort my Disney pins for trading, and go through the bills one more time on Wednesday night before I leave. Then, its off to the airport! :cool1:

In the words of Mickey Mouse, See you real soon! -Mike :cool2:

Hi everyone!

I'm not sure if you've heard but there's a bit of sad news circulating on FB. I've cut and pasted the article in case you haven't seen it yet. I know not everyone got along with Robert, but please take a moment for Robert and Linda's families.

Robert and Linda Mathis Killed by Intoxicated Driver
January 01, 2012
By: JohnBlue
Category: General Running News, Road Races, Ultrarunning

The Mathis were the force behind the Sierra Nevada Trail Runs.
According to a report in the Reno Gazette Journal, around 8:00 PM Friday night, Robert and Linda Mathis were struck and killed while crossing Highway 28, in a painted crosswalk, in Incline Village.

Although they haven’t released details, the Nevada Highway Patrol suspect drug use was involved in the accident. The driver, Christopher Smith, was arrested and booked into Washoe County Jail on two counts of DUI causing death and failure to yield to a pedestrian.

The Mathis are widely known in the road and ultrarunning community, and Robert Mathis is the race director behind a large number of races, including the River City Marathon and Rock’n River 50.

Mathis also operated a timing company, River City Race Management.

We wish the best for their family and friends.

Vicky, besides the Goofy, here is my race schedule for the year so far:

January 14th~ Polar Dash Half marathon, Chicago IL (with Liz)

March 4th~ Little Rock Full marathon, Little Rock, Arkansas

March 18th~ Hillstriders Half marathon, Cary IL (with Liz)

March 24th~ John Bingham's Penguin in the Park 5k, Decatur IL (with Liz)

April 27th~ Illinois 5k, Champaign,IL (with Rick)

April 28th~ Illinois Half marathon, Champaign, IL (with Rick)

May 5th~ Expedition Everest Challenge, WDW

May 26th~ Soldier Field 10 miler, Chicago, IL (with Liz and Rick)

July 22nd~ Chicago Rock and Roll half marathon, Chicago, IL (with Liz)

August 19th~ Providence Rock and Roll half marathon, Providence, RI (with Liz)

September 1st~ Disneyland Family 5k, Disneyland CA

September 2nd~ Disneyland Half marathon, Disneyland CA

There will be a few more coming! Liz will be doing a few Tri's and I want to add a full in the fall. Anyone else thinking of doing the Airforce Full marathon in Dayton, OH?

I just read the post about Robert and am very saddened. I never had the chance to meet him, but know a few here were friends with him. Prayers will be said here for their family.

On Feb 10, 2007 I was on my morning race walk and for about 20 feet a little field mouse kept pace beside me as I walked along a country road. I thought that was cute since it had never happened before. That afternoon Robert Mathis contacted me and asked me if I would be the walking advisor and a moderator on his new website, DisneyRunning. I'm not the most religious person but when God whacks me with a sign like that then I'm going to listen. I'm pretty sure that mouse was that sign that the World and concept of Disney were part of my destiny.

I know that most of you already know that story, this is what I pasted on here and facebook this morning. I'm kinda at a loss for anymore words right now so I just reposted.

Sally and I would have been hanging out with Robert and Linda most of the trip. Now we don't have any meal plans except for the Friday breakfast and the Friday Wish meet at Pop. Is it possible Sally and I can be added to the Sunday after marathon dinner.

If anyone wants to do some park hopping and riding the rides with us we will be there all day on Wednesday and depart the following thursday.

Dave:hippie:

Good Morning Team!

Vicky - I’m with Mike - Thanks for being team capt - you are doing a great job! Yes, very sad about Robert and Linda.

Mike - Our winds actually calmed down yesterday (and today - they will pick up again tomorrow). We only put out Christmas lights and decorations that can survive the wind - none of those big blow up things that Scott loves - they would not survive! Do not worry about being undertrained, you have done enough races to know you can finish, even if it is not at a PB pace. It is hard to do PB’s at a Disney race anyway because there are too many distractions. Great news on the CT scan!!!! Night shift must really be difficult with a child, I only had to deal with dogs and cats when I was on that shift. It is good to have someone to compete with - hope Rick keeps you on track for your goals. I see your race schedule is again very aggressive.

Eva - Hope you had a great birthday yesterday!

AFM - Finally at decent day out, not very warm, but the wind really calmed down, dogs got their walk, then I spent an hour on the spin bike. I seem to have stalled in the weight loss department, have been the same weight for the last 3 days. Today we are hoping to get out on the bikes, it will be warmer and still light winds, tomorrow the winds pick up again.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Good morning team.

Dave: I am so so so sorry for your loss. I didn't have many communications with Robert, but I know that you guys were very close. I am truly sorry. I'm sure the team here will rally around you and help support you through this trip. :hug:It's just so shocking!

Lynn: It's pretty normal to stall out after losing a pound a day for awhile. Glad you got outside yesterday.

Mike: WOW is all I can say to your race schedule! My goodness. I am tired just reading it.
I met all of my running goals and actually surpassed them. Managed to run a 5K, 10K, half and full (Goofy) in 2010. The surpassing part came with my 5k time (22:03). I didn't think I could run that fast. :)But, never met my weight loss goals either. I manage to always get within 5 pounds of my goal and stall out, then gain weight.

Vicky: I agree with everyone. You do an awesome job here. :thumbsup2

AFM: I feel like the biggest sloth after yesterday. I never got out of my PJs, except to put on my Packers jersey. We just ate and watched football all day long. But, all the junk food is gone!!!! We start down the road to weight loss today. I'm also not eating any processed food at all, which is fun to me. I started with no powdered creamer today, which is my favorite thing. I am using half and half, so obviously, I need to limit it. We're all going for a family walk today and, if the knee works, a family bike ride. Today is going to be chillier than it's been in a week with a high of 37, but that's still not bad at all.

January 14th~ Polar Dash Half marathon, Chicago IL (with Liz)
March 24th~ John Bingham's Penguin in the Park 5k, Decatur IL (with Liz)
April 27th~ Illinois 5k, Champaign,IL (with Rick)
April 28th~ Illinois Half marathon, Champaign, IL (with Rick)
May 26th~ Soldier Field 10 miler, Chicago, IL (with Liz and Rick)
July 22nd~ Chicago Rock and Roll half marathon, Chicago, IL (with Liz)

Mike: We are running six races together this year? That's awesome! I look forward to more Long Runs with you -- they truly are a lot more fun when we run them together. And I am still trying to catch up to your race pace so I can be speedy like you! :goodvibes

Vicky: I echo the sentiments of others when I say you have been an awesome Team Captain! You made me feel very welcomed to the group and I really appreciate that! Just so you know, I do have reservations for both Kona and Chef Mickey so look out for me! Oh, and I posted my 2013 race schedule on a separate thread started by Big Vic for the 'Race Calendar 2013' (or something like that).

AFM: I did my cardio assessment this morning and the results show improvement! Yay! So now my heart rate zones in my Polar are updated and I am pleased to see how my training is improving my AT and my fat burn rate. I lost another 55 pounds in 2011, and I am hoping to lose another 50 in 2012 (which would bring my total weight loss since 2010 to 160 pounds).

Today is chores and running around town. Then tonight I begin my packing and getting ready for Disney. I have to work Tuesday (bleh) so I want to start packing now. Mike, I don't know how you do it my man -- so many work days in a row! But it will be all good once you hit the 'land of mouse'!

Happy New Year everyone!

Just a quick fly by for me today because I'm going to try and finish up the rest of my laundry and packing today so I can relax (somewhat) tomorrow. I did my 4 and 8 miles on the weekend and I guess I'm ready as I'll ever be for the Goofy :) I went to the gym and did a workout this morning. My trainer made sure to show me some stretches to do before and after the races.

Dave - I'm really sorry for your loss :( I didn't know Robert well except for the few hellos we exchanged on race weekend. I was shocked by the news. I know it's cliche but it reminded me of how short life can be. It has me rethinking what I want to accomplish for 2012 and how I treat the people in my life.

For Sunday, I made a reservation for 6 but there will only be 5 us of. I'm thinking that if we get there a bit earlier and explain that we have 7 instead of 6, it would be ok. Surely someone here is good at sweet talking the hostess :) In the meantime, see if you can make an ADR around the same time for two people - just in case. The dining system won't let me book more than 1 reservation within a two hour period of my original Chef Mickey reservation. With Kona, I had to get Kim to make a second reservation so that we'd have enough seats (it's so dumb).

Rick - I'm doing a half day on Tuesday. I was originally going to work half of Friday but decided to stay the whole day so that I could take off early on Tuesday. My flight is at 6:30AM so I know I'm going to have to be in bed early! Six races already planned for the year! Wow! That's awesome that you're doing them with Mike :) It's much nicer to run with a partner than it is by yourself. Congrats on your weight loss so far and I'll be rooting for you this year to get rid of that last 50! Are you going to do before and after pics?

Tandy - Good for you that you're eating clean! I'll bet you won't miss the creamer after this week. Does your supermarket sell light cream (5%)? I weaned myself down from coffee cream (18%) to half and half to light cream and down to milk. I still can't drink coffee black though. I also add a tiny pinch of cinnamon to my coffee - I find it takes the edge off some mornings. How are the glutes and ITB today?

I posted the bib numbers here.

Lynn - We seem to have gotten some Wyoming weather in Toronto today. It's been really windy and snowing on and off. Nothing seems to be sticking to the ground which is good. I hope it's warm enough for a bike ride today! Because we've hardly had any snow, a lot of people here are still riding bikes as well to and from work.

Regina - Safe travels! See you in a few days :goodvibes

Mike - January 14th you have a race? You're coming back from vacation and straight into a half? You are hard core!! :thumbsup2 I will try and get your races added to the calendar before I go (no guarantees though  ) I'm going to try and go to DL as well - I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a good deal on airfare.

Lynn/Tandy/Sue - You ladies will have to keep the thread going while we're gone!

AFM - Thanks for all captain compliments! I have to say it's pretty easy when our team is full of so many awesome people! I love that you guys are out there walking and running in all kinds of weather - no one's afraid of the rain, cold, snow or heat! You guys inspire to get out there and go running or hit the gym on mornings when I'd rather just hibernate. So thanks for being a great team :grouphug:

If anyone wanted their chance at being the team captain - let me know :goodvibes

So what are some of the goals you guys are setting for 2012? Let's hear 'em ... they can be personal, family, financial, health, fitness, career... what ever you want to share with the group! Maybe we can give each other some ideas! I'm still working on mine - I guess the most immediate being finish packing

Have a great day everyone! :wave2:

Happy January 2nd Everyone!

Only a few more hours until WDW...

Dave~ I would really like to park hop with you and Sally! I will be there from Thursday until the following Friday! If I don't run into you before, we can update our contact info at the team meet on Friday morning and make some plans then!

Vicky~ I figured that I better post my race schedule since I was actually on here. Please don't be in any kind of a hurry to update it, you have vacation planning to worry about! :thumbsup2 I have one more- I signed up for the Air Force marathon in Dayton, OH on Sept. 14th. This year I think I can cross off Florida, Arkansas, Ohio, and maybe Massachusetts off my fifty states list for fulls.

AFM~ got my trading pins out and printed a list of what I'm hunting for! I might make it to the gym today for a run, but Robert has been bouncing off the walls today, thanks heavens that school starts back tomorrow! I tried on my cargo shorts and they still fit, even after the holiday munchies. I am very happy about that! Two more nights of work left...

- Mike :cool2:

I met a brother race walker at the mall this morning and had a super 4 miler. Amazing how well rested legs perform. It was 21 degrees out so the mall won out.

Mike yes sounds great. I want Sally to get to see some of the stuff she missed last time. We depart on Thursday morning so we can do a lot after the race weekend. We are doing the German buffet on monday at 1:00. That is the only firm plan we have.

News alert, Pandas have been seen Fleeing south in a white Nissan Altima, with a black and orange plate on the front that says "Grrrrrrrrrrrrr!!". If you see these strange creatures don't try to approach them as one of them appears to be going Goofy!
