Hakuna Matada - Hot, hot July!

So far my day is going faboulously! (Yes, that's sarcasm). Nothing says fun like my cat freaking out all night. She's taken to burrowing in our blankets because she's spooked. We can't figure out what has her worked up. It's narrowed down to bugs (a lot of HUGE bugs have been getting in lately) or because they were in our apartment testing the smoke detectors and fire alarm. I'm taking off work early today to check up on her since I'm scared she's going to stress her body out the way she's fraking out.

Then I get to work only to find out that one of our applicants that we declined has decided we're a bunch of racists bigots who clearly deliberately sabotaged his application and declined him as a coverup for our biased and bigotted ways. :sad2: No matter how untrue that is (and it's more than 100% untrue) it still hurts to have such things said about you (yes, I was specifically referenced because I'm the front line for the department). :headache:

It's not even 9 am and I regret waking up this morning.

Morning everyone! The 180 day ADR window is coming up so if anyone else wants in on breakfast at Kona Cafe (Friday Jan 6) or Chef Mickey's (Sunday Jan 8). Let me know ASAP! And no pressure to attend either.

Saylan - Sorry to hear about all the craziness! Whatever happened to just moving on? If I got declined for a job, I'd just keep looking. I never would think about throwing in the race card. Was that job the one and only job he's applied for? I know when I'm job hunting, I send off my resume to several different places. Some people...

I hadn't thought of the angle that even though you're saving money, they still owe you more money. I say good for you for being able to squeeze another course out of them :)

Awesome workout! We should swap workout routines sometime!

Dave - Hope you get your A/C fixed soon or here's hoping that the weather doesn't heat up too much while you're waiting. Enjoy your training walk tomorrow!!

Mike - Those are some expensive teeth Mike! You can be a rapper  Seriously, isn't there something other than titanium that they can use? I'm sure it's indestructible but still ... Does insurance cover any of that? I miss having a job where I could pick up extra shifts, especially for triple OT! Awesome! I use to work some holidays when I worked for a media company so I'd get 2.5x pay. Now that I'm salaried, I get a pat on the head  And I'm in for Winnie the Pooh FPs!

Good luck to Liz this weekend! Is there a link that we can use to track her during the race?

AFM - Yesterday was a rest day for me which meant a catch day for errands. Boo! But at least they're all done. I slept in this morning so I'm going to have to run when I get home from work. Yuck humidity! I'm going to swap my Thursday run and do that tonight. Then I'll do the slightly longer distance on Thursday morning.

So I have a minor vent... I was texting with a friend who asked me how my "training" was going. Yep. He used quotes around training. I asked him what's up with the quotes. He said he didn't know how serious I was about it all. Ok, I'll never be an elite runner but it doesn't mean I don't have to train for a race. Then he had the nerve to say that at least the money he spent on his hobby (car racing), was tangible. I wanted to tell him that I could have given him a run for his money (sorry for the pun) if I added up exactly how much I spent on treatments, gym training, running shoes, knick knacks and oh yeah, travelling to races. I think I win but I wasn't trying to win ... Just offended that my training warranted quotes. This is the same person who said I was working out with the new training based on looks - without ever have seen what my new trainer looks like. Sheesh! Ok I'm done venting :)

So anyone else who wants in on the breakfast and dinner, let me know!!

Have a great day! :wave2:

Good Afternoon Team!

Vicky - The blowouts on the bikes depend upon the tires, I was having a flat every day on one bike until I got slightly heavier tires, haven’t had a problem since - ease of fixing depends on how good you are at changing tires! And if you have a spare tube or have to patch the existing tube. (We tend to keep a spare tube with us.)

Kim - It does take extra energy to start exercising again after vacation!

Mike - I am not sure I would call it “refrigerator” white - HAHA - I would call it pearl white - but, yes, it is white, an ’89, the only year it was white. Good luck to Liz on her tri!

Dave - Hope your air conditioner is fixed soon!

Saylan - Biking is much easier than walking or running - except in the wind! Sorry you are having such a bad day! Hope the cat calms down, did the fireworks get her upset?

AFM - We took yesterday as a cross training day, I did a Pilates tape and some weights. Today is muggy although not the storms predicted - yet - got a dog walk in, and will get downstairs for more cross training or on the spin bike. Tomorrow morning is supposed to be clear, so we will get out on bikes again!

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Another awesome, and yes hot and humid, walk with my group. We made 6.7 miles on the rolling hills in 1:21:36. That does include a slower mile to warm up and some pretty steep hills. We were beat after battling that heat but we were all mentally refreshed.

The air is working but they had to bypass the heating for a while. They are intalling a new digital system which will be cheaper than repairing my relay driven analog system. It's being fixed under the home owner warranty so I pay a flat $60 no matter what the final repair cost. My system is a tad complicated since I have two complete systems for the upstairs and downstairs and the heat and air are seperate systems. So I'll be getting a new digital system to tie it all together instead of the forest of relays. The last storm fried the old system pretty good.

Got the yard work done so upper body work taken care of for the week:)

Vicky the miles we are do are like putting money in a retirement account, it reaps benefits when others are old and sitting on the couch waiting to die you will still be full of energy and doing stuff and seeing things.

Dave:hippie:

Hello team!

Grrr... I just typed up my whole post but Disboards logged me out and I lost it:headache:

Saylan - Welcome back! I hope you can make it to DL.

Nikki - Welcome back!

Kim - I always find it hard to back into training after vacation.

Vicky - The ice cream turned out really good. Count me in with the cool kids, we're staying at Pop :) I don't think I could push a sand bag across the floor while running, that does sound horrible.

Dave - Hope your AC is fixed soon.

Mary - Happy anniversary! I hope you are ok after your fall.

AFM - We booked our room for Jan, we're staying at Pop.

My toe is feeling better. It didn't bother me much during our run on Monday. We went out early again but it was still hot.

On Monday we went to the Tim Burton exhibit at the art museum. It was really neat. My only complaint is that it was very busy. The exhibit uses timed entry tickets but I think they need to do better crowd control.

Have a good night!
Emily

Hi Team!

Emily- When we had DirecTV we recorded a lot of our shows we watched as well. I hope your training is going well.

Saylan- Good luck getting back into training! I hope you’re able to get time off for both DL half and WDW weekend. That’s great you’ve been approved to take some courses. I hope you enjoy it!

Vicky- Upside down chocolate pear cake sounds interesting. It’s nice to hear the training is still giving you a good workout. If you haven’t already, put me down for 2 people for Kona on Friday please!!! LOL, when I was reading your vent, I was going to ask you if that was the same guy, but then you answered my question. He doesn’t sound like a very nice friend. Seriously, what happened to him??

Nikki- Welcome back! I’m glad you’ve got a race picked out and school is winding down.

Mike- That’s great you have a teammate so close! Great job on the 10 miles! Tell Liz good luck on her Tri on Sunday!!!

Dave/Mike- I had no idea dental work could get so expensive!

Dave- I’m glad you got the AC fixed! It’s definitely an amenity I wouldn’t want to be without in that heat! How did the horses get out of their fenced in areas? Did they jump over the fences, or were they not fenced in? I’m glad your dental appointment went well.

Kim- I’m glad you had a great vacation! I hope your training and weight loss are going well.

Lynn-I hope the day is nice tomorrow for your bike rides. I guess Taiya didn’t want her stitches in anymore huh? Is kayaking hard to do or can beginners pick on it pretty easily? I’ve never been, but lots of people in Idaho went kayaking and it always looked like fun to me. Oh, and I agree with Mike- I hope my DH and I have as much fun when we retire as you and Scott are!

Mary- Congrats on your 5k!

Elizabeth- So what is the OCD? Will it go away on its own or what is the treatment if not surgery? Did they say what causes it? I’m glad the Dr. could tell you what it is and that you know why it’s been hurting.

AFM, I was unable to get into the chiro last week and the earliest they can get me in this week is tomorrow. I’ve never been to this chiro so we will see how it goes. I haven’t run in about a week and a half because my neck and back are still so tight and hurt from time to time and I don’t want to make anything worse. I’m hoping my appt goes well tomorrow so I can get back into my training. I hope everyone has a great day tomorrow!

Sorry still way behind.

Hope everyone is doing great can you believe we are in the 2nd part of the year. Crazy stuff.

Kimmer I miss getting to hang out with you, can't wait till Ohio in Sept. You are always so excited about life and it makes everyone around you get excited to.

I should be ready for a super half by then, I'm shooting for a sub 2:45, haven't done that for quite a while. Are you going to be ready for a PR at that half?

Dave:hippie:

I'm taking a rest day since I have to work an 11 hour shift. I had a hard training walk yesterday and doing it again tomorrow also so rest is good.

I first race of the season is only a week away now, I hope to do well. Just found out I have to work right up till the start though. Grrrrr!!

Dave:hippie:

Dave:hippie:

Aww thanks Dave you are the sweetest!!!!

I am working on it, my goal is to really rock out marathon weekend but have 2 halfs and 2 other races between now and then so hope to be a lean mean fighting machine

Vicky another thing to mention to car boy is that if he would exercise regularly then when he gets old all his parts will still work as advertised.

Sally is loving her job and everything is going super. It was a long haul hunting for employment but the outcome turned out to be worth the wait.

Hope everyone is feeling the love and ready for a super second half of the year.

Dave:hippie:

Good Afternoon Team!

Kim - Hi Kim!

Dave - Sounds like you will end up with a better heating/air conditioning system when they are done! Good to hear that Sally likes her job!

Emily - Glad to hear your toe is better!

Regina - Lake kayaking that we do is easy to pick up, river kayaking is much more skill intensive, as you need to learn to roll before going out - in a lake, it is just paddling around. I never did learn river kayaking. I do not know about ocean kayaking, it is probably somewhere in between the other 2. Good luck with your Chiro appt!

AFM - Yesterday I did get in a cardio Pilates tape, and 20 min on the spin bike. Today we got out on the bikes for 16 miles. This afternoon I got the motorcycle out for the first time this year (the first time is always hair-raising to me), but got comfortable on it again. We are enjoying following the Tour de France daily.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Hi Team!

Dave- I hope you enjoyed your rest day. I’m glad Sally is loving her job and it all worked out for you both.

Lynn- Oh, I was thinking it was river kayaking. Lake kayaking sounds like fun. I’m glad you enjoyed getting on the motorcycle today.

AFM, the chiro appt went ok. It was long and I was adjusted. I’m definitely very tight and inflamed. But, hopefully it will get better each time I go. He wants to see me twice a week for 2 weeks, but I can’t go again until July 25. I’m hoping to get out for a run or two this weekend.

Lynn: What kind of motorcycle do you have, MIke and I use to ride I had a Honda Magna 500 and Mike had a 1100 Virago I think it was. We gave them up a few years ago insurance costs where crazy for the amount of time we got to use them.

:cheer2: Weekend Racers :cheer2:

Good luck Elizabeth! Hope your knee is feeling better :) Keep us posted!

September
9 - Denny's Challenge for Melanoma Research 5k, Cary, NC - Elizabeth

Good luck, Elizabeth! I hope you're feeling good enough to race. :cheer2:

Vicky: I don't yet know my travel dates for January so I'm sorry I can't commit yet for either of the reservations. Ideally I would like to attend one if not both of them but everything is still up in the air.

Thanks. He was an applicant to be a student with us. We have anywhere from 120-150 applications a year and only about 20-25 people get in usually. Oddly enough, I had no idea what his race was, I don't look at that on an application when I process it. I just sort them based on Canadian citizen or not (only because it changes how much money we have to be able to provide them for living expenses and tuition). There's no pictures, and it's all electronically submitted so without expressly looking through his data for his address, I wouldn't know anything about where he's from or his background. :sad2:

We definitely should swap work outs! That goes for anyone else too. I keep detailed workout journals so I'd be happy to share any thing people want. I have a KILLER glute/leg workout I'd be happy to post if it piques anyone's interest.

I'd be ticked too, honestly. My dad used the 'you can't really call it running if you take walk breaks or go under <insert number> km/h' line on me before the Princess. Magically, that stopped once I brought home the bling. You may not spend as much (you also may, depending) but at least your hobby isn't adding to emissions in the atmosphere. Unless a 100% battery powered car, he's still partially adding to the problem in someway, and you're working on being healthier, encouraging others (like me and our team) and avoiding pollution. :thumbsup2 Car boy probably said it because he doesn't think he could ever compete on a level playing field with you.

Lynn: Thanks, We didn't have many fireworks around here since our area is really heavily under construction and the neighbourhood is only about 25% built.

I liked biking when I used to do it but I found going for too long was hard on the butt. I envy you being able to put so much time in on that. I wouldn't be able to for sure! :thumbsup2

Emily: Thanks! How were the pieces in the exhibit? I really wished I could have gone to one of the showings.

Regina: Thanks. I actually love taking courses. I am thinking of going back to school for another degree but I can't figure out what will help me get where I want to go.

I hope the chiro stuff clears up fast. It sounds painful!

AFM: I got updates all over the place so where to begin?

The kitty is doing better. I took her to vet last night (bye bye 80$) and they said she doesn't have fleas, doesn't seem to be sick, and has no ear infection (all things we thought might be the problem). She's apparently very b*tchy because she's a calico but she was misbehaving really badly at the vet's so they couldn't even do a full exam. I spent 20 minutes in the room waiting for the vet and 15-20 minutes watching them try to pin her down long enough to check her fur and 5 minutes hearing the 'diagnosis'. :headache: They figure she's just traumatized from when the appartment peopel came in and checked our fire alarm. She's already much better today than she was yesterday. It was so hard hearing her yowl like that. I'm sure she hates me now but I did what I had to to make sure she's healthy.

The rest of my day from hell I mentioned here was bad. Worse than bad, actually. I had a student reduce me to tears at the end of the day. It just overall was a very stinky day and I was glad to be done it.

That same day, though, I finally got up the nerve to ask for the time off for DL. I wrote the best request I could explaining why the time off would make my planning easier. I found out the next morning that I found out that they appreciated my details and my attempt to organize my trip without asking time off so they agreed to grant my request. I not only got the Friday but also the Thursday before the race.

Now, I'm neck deep trying to locate hotels/motels to stay at and plan flights. I've found a couple of cheapish motels nears the park which look clean from the pictures but if anyone has any specific recommendations I'd love that since I've never even been to the state let alone that area. It's baffling to have so many options when I'm used to WDW. :rotfl:

I got on the workout weekend for a bit but fell off again with Wednesday's drama (and a baby shower) as well as Thursday's vet visit. I'm going to make myself do something, anything, at the gym today. I'm undecided if I should shift my running so I'm doing a maintenance run today, weights tomorrow, and a long run on Sunday or if I should stick to weights today and put my long run tomorrow and just go one maintenance run short this week. :confused3 Really not sure what I'll end up doing.

TGIF, is all I can say. :cool1:

Lot's of good competition today at the World Masters Competition. An American race walker, Jonathan Matthews, set a new American Record for the Men's 55 to 60 5K. 22:15!!

Nyle, the New Zealander, won the Womens 5K race walk overall with a 27:33. An American woman, Tammy, took silver with a 28:05.

An American, don't have his name yet, set a new World Record for the men's 70 to 74 age group race walk.

Keeping up with all that and being inspired and desiring to be ready for the next competition helped me do a PR on my hill and river route this morning. I dragged my training partner along with me, total time for our 6.7 miles was 1:18:54 for a pace of 11:46 per mile. This is a hard route with a couple of hill that really get your attention. Real tickled about todays training walk.

All my wounds seem to be healed, my achillies is still tender till I get warmed up good. But the PF appears to be gone.

Just want to say that it is great to read how well you did and how much better you are feeling. Stay well and speedy. john:)

Yes I'm finally beginning to feel well enough to get back to competing again. I have a race on the 16th that will be my return to actually racing and not just doing a race. I still have a long way to go to get where I want to be but I'm believing it's possible again.

Dave:hippie:

Thanks for the Welcome backs everyone!

Vicky- We are doing a training program by Jon Ackland. I did it for the WDW 1/2 and really liked it! It combines running and walking and I did great with it before!

Saylan- Hope your injury is on its way to healing! Way to hit the lges!

Mike- Hope Liz had a blast with her Tri!!!!

Emily- Thanks for the welcome back!

Regina- How are you feeling after that Chiro appt? any better?

Elizabeth- Have a great race!!!!!

Dave- Glad to heal you are healing! Hope the Achilles continues to improve

AFM- I got in a walk this morning, my first since summer school started 8 weeks ago!! All I have to say is I can REALLY see what sitting in a classroom for 32 hours a week for 8 weeks does to your body!! Man was I pathetic! I can only hope that my body will realize what I am trying to make it do quickly!
