I've heard a lot about this. Where do they do the hairbraiding? How much is it? Read somewhere that it's per braid??? :scratchin:

Jennay,

On board, if you check your Navigator, there will be sign up times for on-ship braiding. It does have a tendency to fill up fast, so be ready to sign up early. Look carefully, sometimes it is not easy to spot.

I believe on board it is $2 a row, but this was for the crown style, not braided all the way down. My niece had hers done for $22 plus tip.

Now, if you are looking for specific ports, I would do a search for "hairbraiding" and you will find a number of responses. The search is at the top right corner of the forum.

Some are post from the cruise meet board and there are pretty long, so check the other ones that don't mention specific cruise dates in the title.

Jennay, I don't know if you have checked it out or not, but at the top of the cruise forum board is a cruise meet board. You can go to it, find the date of your cruise and get to know the people going. It is alot of fun!!!

You can also get your hairbraided at Castaway Cay, I believe it is also $2.00 per braid. Keep in mind it is extremely PAINFUL  if your child is very sensitive to pain consider that before having it done. My 13 DD was in tears the whole time and my 5 DD never cried but said it really hurt. Good luck!

the girls on board are NOT painful....my DD (5) wanted it done so bad that we made an appointment for end of the week and talked all week about how it would pull and hurt, etc, etc, etc....not only did it NOT hurt, SHE FELL ASLEEP while getting it done she was so relaxed!

I have no experience with this, so please don't flame me. However, I have HEARD that you should stick to DCL braiding vs. any of the islands. I've heard stories of pretty bad lice following braiding on the islands.

Woobie

My DD4 also did it onboard, and loved it! She said it did not hurt, and it was a highlight for her. My DD2 even got a braid, which she loved.

Some tips from reading these boards:

1. If you go with Disney, and you have any problems, they will comp the service or have it re-done. If you do it on an island, you'll be long gone.

2. Warn your child it may hurt, then if it doesn't, no problems.

3. Bring your own comb. I really can't remember if they used it, but I brought it. On the ship, they have them soaking in disinfectant.

4. They book up fast on board. You can sign up the afternoon you board. Do it then. You'll see it in the Navigator as to where to go and when reservations are open.

5. To get them out easily and with no pain: Coat your child's hair in cheap conditioner - Suave? Once it's soaked in, the braids will literally slide out. Plus, your child's hair will be really soft when they're gone!

Ours lasted 3 weeks, but DD has heavy, coarse hair that holds braids well. She loved them, and felt so pretty.

It seemed to me most little girls on board have them by the time the cruise was over.

Good luck!

FYI last time I checked Castaway Cay was Disney's own Private Island.

Exactly... I'm sorry if I was misunderstood, that's why I said Disney, not just on the cruise.

If you have a problem with braiding - falling out or not happy with the work - and you have it done by Disney people, on the boat or on CC - you have somewhere to go with your complaints. :goodvibes

My DD had hers done on Castaway Cay. The braiders there are not the same as the ship. The women actually come to the island by boat from Abaco 3 days per week when the ship is there to braid. Cost was $2 per braid, but they made them VERY small so the cost was about $50. It took about 45 minutes and I think they stayed about 3 weeks. Probably could've left them in longer, but they were getting "fuzzy." DD doesn't want to do it again. They took FOREVER to take out (much longer than it took to put in) and there were handfuls of hair in the floor when I got finished. Probably a good tip about the conditioner.

Question...have any adults ever had their hair braided? I was actually considering having mine done just for fun when we cruise in December? IMO, I would have it done on the ship this time, not to "waste" any time on CC. It's too precious!

Should anyone decide to get it done in one of the ports... make sure you negotiate a total price you will pay in addition to the per braid fee. I have heard stories of people agreeing to pay $1 per braid and then the women make about 40 small braids!

Thank You ALL for the information!! Very Helpful!! My DD6 will love the braids in her hair. I'll be sure to go with Disney. Thanks Again! :flower3:

Not to beat a dead horse, but I completely agree about telling the braider how many braids you want.

I waited until the last sea day to get DD4's hair done. I did that so it would last longer after we got off the ship. But it gave me a really good chance to see all the hair braiding. And yes, lots of girls had tiny little braids that must have hurt, must have cost a lot, and most have taken a long time.

When I had DD's hair done, I told her about 8 braids. I thought that was plenty, and it wouldn't break the bank.

And I'm sure that made them easier to take out.
