Apologies if this has been asked a zillion times before, but we're coming over from the UK and I was wondering if I should bring my straighteners and US adaptor, or, try and buy a pair of straighteners when we're in Miami

If you think I should buy a new pair, do you think I might get some at a mall anywhere near the port?

Thanks to anyone who can help :thumbsup2

Fiona :)

Hi...I will try to help....

When you say straighteners (plural) do you use 2 different kinds or are they called a pair in the UK (please excuse my ignorance here).

They are not that much money here and can be found in almost any mall or Target, Wal-Mart, etc.

If you like the ones you use and already have the adapter I would say bring yours....if you don't want to lug them one way then you could purchase them stateside. IF you purchase them here could you use them back home in the U.K.?

Are you asking about a flat iron?

I'm not sure what type you're used to, but near the port is Cape Canaveral, which has some various drugstores. I actually bought a blow dryer at a Walgreen's just before we boarded in September (it died at the hotel the morning of the cruise and those little dryers the ship provides are not powerful enough for my big 'ol head of hair!).

I use an expensive flat iron (Chi) because the others just don't work. If you are used to that type, I don't know where you could get one. Maybe you could mail order one and then not worry about it-- you may be too excited to think about it just before you board. :cloud9:

Have a GREAT trip! I can't wait to book my 2008 trip (3rd cruise).

I would bring yours from home. You might not find what you are used to here. I am more comfortable using the curling iron from home, and I would think the same would be the case with a straightener.

My daughter and I each have a chi straight iron too. I wouldn't be caught dead without it. Others just don't work as well. I'd bring what you're used to with the appropriate electrical adapter.

I have found that my hair does so much better on the cruise than here at home in South Louisiana where the humidity is horrible. Even though you're on the water, the humidity isn't an issue (or I haven't thought so).

I vote for bringing your own with an adapter. I also LOVE:love: my CHI and would never leave home without IT:scared1: !

Have a wonderful cruise!

Another vote for an adapter and your own flat iron. If you don't have a Chi you might want to buy one here.

:surfweb:

You can buy a cheap one here for about $20-25. However, DD won't use the cheapies--she wants her own that she is comfortable with. I'd bring yours....however, if you want to purchase one and have a car, there are places to stop between the airport and the port that are not far out of your way.

Wow..I had to google to find out what CHI were..LOL..I use a straightener, but just the average kind as mentioned..

Seems VERY $$$:scared1:, but lots of you have it, it must work well..

If you do use a straightener, I would bring it..I used mine faithfully, or looked like Monica in friends.:upsidedow

Another vote to bring your own with adapter. Thank GOD we brought one b/c I have really thick hair and the ones in the bathroom did NOTHING for me. Also, the plugs in the rooms wouldn't work with my hair dryer and flat iron so I had to plug my own into my adapter using the socket at the bedroom vanity.

please fill me in. . .what is special about a chi? (i have tried a straightner and don't seem to work well--but, maybe it's the cheap kind--to be honest i don't know what brand i have) is it worth buying a chi to try??? :cutie:

Girls,
There is absolutely nothing like an authentic CHI by Farouk....For out-of-control hair that does it's own thing in humidity, the CHI has changed my life!!! Amen! Halleluiah!

Yes, it is a bit pricey, but I got mine from EBAY (brand new, not refurbished), for a much better price.

Now, I have hair just like "Marcia, Marcia, Marcia" from the Brady Bunch!

P.S. Mommasita, I was sending my kids Crocs through the dishwasher this morning and noticed on the bottom that they are made in Canada...I thought about you;) .

Smores,
I think the difference is how hot the CHI gets...I've tried others and they didn't really do anything and left 'dents' in my hair. Then my hairstylist used a CHI on my hair one day, and I was hooked....My hair was smoother and glossier than it had ever been in my life.....:)

I just read the original post for this thread and noticed that you are coming from the UK , as a former native of Britain I can tell you that if you bring your own straightner/hair iron from home with an adaptor it is not going to heat up as well as it would at home. As other posters have said you can get inexpensive ones in any drug store BUT be sure to apply some kind of thermal protectant to your hair before using them as they are more drying than the expensive hair irons and also most of the cheaper ones only have one heat setting.

Isn't that IRONIC.. :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Just my sad story, and I will say that this was YEARS ago so maybe things have changed and it was a curling iron and not a flat iron, but anyway I bought the adapter and plugged up my curling iron and the stupid thing got so hot it burned me when I picked it up. And that's when I noticed that it had actually started to melt it was so hot. My hair dryer worked fine for the adapter so it wasn't that. So if it were me, I would just save myself the hassle and buy what I needed near the port if possible. I know they sell a lot of brands in the stores near there, but plainly many people here like what they have better. I just didn't want your favorite flat iron to have a melting incident. ;) Who knew that was even possible? :confused3

Interesting about the humidity. It sure seems to me in 6 Caribbean cruises that most women give up styling their hair after the first few days because the humidity is so high. Just an observation....another being that a lot of women's hair styles in my opinion aren't as nice as what their hair does naturally.

Hi I'm from England.

I brought my GHDs, (which are a top quality straighters in the Uk.) They dont heat up so well, with the power being less in the USA, however they do work, it just takes a little longer.

I think i would still do this, as buying a cheaper USA set wont get any better result.

Take lots of conditioner the sea air is a nightmare if your hair is dry/ over processed.

OH! Contraire, TVGuy.....
You have never seen what my hair does NATURALLY...:scared1:

I'm from the UK too and, as I found my GHD's just didn't work as well in the US, I bought some CHI straighteners off eBay. :thumbsup2
