I recently went to a new salon that had an assistant to the hairdresser, and she washed my hair (this was a first for me, the person cutting my hair always shampooed it). Anyway, after she shampooed my hair I went to the hairdresser and she cut my hair. Since I never had a seperate shampoo girl, I never thought about tipping her, plus I was too excited about getting a new cut, so it wasn't until I read the post by luvmarypoppins that it even entered my mind I should have tipped her. Anyway, my question is this, how much do you tip the shampoo person and when do you tip them, as soon as they are done or when you check out at the end of your appointment? My cut and blowdry was $40, I gave the hairdresser a 20% tip, so what should I have given the shampoo girl?

I usually give the shampoo girl around $3.00 or so.

There was one I was very friendly with so I would give her $5.00.

I have actually asked my hairstylist this question. He said that a few dollars is fine for the shampoo person. He's awesome, and we have become friends. I always go back to the same guy.:sunny:

$3 is the norm

give them $5 if you get a REALLY good head massage!

$5 in NYC. I also have a separate shoulder massage person (free shoulder massage with any styling) so I'll have to tip him/her too. That's about $3.

For a regular haircut, I give the haircutter 5.00 and shampoo girl 3.00. When I have my hair colored, I give the colorist 10.00 and shampoo girl 5.00. I normally tip everyone after I pay my bill.
