Do any of you color your hair at home? I've had my hair colored at the salon several times in the past many years, but just can't afford it right now and REALLY want to get it colored (seeing too many of those gray hairs -- not that anyone else would notice, just me). I'd like to try one of those multi-tonal hair colors, and I don't want to do anything radical, just brighten up my natural color. Any brands you prefer? Any tips or hints? Thanks for any help you can give!

I used to make my husband do it but got up the nerve to do it myself last year and have managed on my own ever since (I have had grey hair since high school and colored it since I was in my early 20s--I figure by now I have easily saved enough to pay for at least one nice vacation by not having it done at a Salon all these years).
It is surprisingly easy and the few times I have had it done it did not look any better. The only tip I have is to put vaseline, or a thick lotion all along your face/neck along the hairline so if some dye gets on your skin it will come right off.

I have done my own for years, it took awhile before I found the perfect color. There are so many variations.

Once I found it I wrote it down by number so I can always buy the same one. I always use L'Oreal, found it is the easiest to use and gentlest on my hair.

I like Fiera but I have a hard time finding the right color as the one I used is not there anymore. It is very easy to really, the hardest part is to find the right color. good luck! :goodvibes

In the past I have had highlights so much that my hair looked blonde, but the maintenance was a you know what - time and money, so I opted to color my hair back to its natural hair color and then as my hair grew out I'd stay "natural". Well once I went au naturale, I realized how much gray hair I had and I was only 27! So needless to say, I have been coloring it myself ever since, and it looks very natural. The only time I realize I need to color is when I start seeing lots of gray - not because the hair color looks different.

I use L'Oreal Nice and Easy. I have one shade I typically use and like, but have been known to go up or down a shade if they don't have my usual. Finding the right color really is the hardest part and it took me a few tries until I found just the right one. The others didn't look bad but I didn't care for them as much. I tend to be very messy coloring my hair - so my recommendation is to wear something that you won't mind getting hair dye on - I usually wear an old tank top. And clean up any dye you may get on the counter, floor, etc, (told you I'm messy), as soon as you are finished applying it on your hair. Oh and I like to use a comb to spread the dye through my hair a little bit better. Seems to help, although as I am growing my hair out and it's getting longer, I notice I use a lot more dye and it's a little more tiring. But still worth it when I think of the time and money I save at a salon!

Done it myself for years. Easy. Quick. I like Gariner best. There are many more brands that are a lot more expensive, and thus, I've never tried them. But I've found that Garier works nicely. And at $6-9 each coloring, it sure beats paying the big bucks at the salon!

I recently discovered Sally Beauty supply and talked to the girls there. They were able to give the EXCELLENT advise on what colors and brand to choose. I will NEVER go back to a box or to a beauty shop to get it done. It costs less than $6 to do it with their supplies...LOVE IT:thumbsup2

First get all the stuff you need together sounds real simple but believe me makes a huge difference. Towels a few, Clips if your hairs is log or thick , combs, couple rags. Do stray to far off your base color. Before you wash wipe the color off around your hair line & ears neck DO NOT use any water at this point water will set the color, then if stuff remains rub shampoo over the spots & wipe off.

I've been using NiceN'Easy for years. I have to say lately it seems to be drying my hair out, so I'm looking to change brands. I was hoping you would get more responses to your question. Good luck :)

Isn't Nice and Easy made by Clairol? I find L'Oreal makes my hair too orange.

Hmmm, maybe :confused3 Either way it is definitely Nice and Easy! The white box with blue and silver-y swirls of color ion it, I think.
