Hair Braiding on the Ship

Does anyone have any details about this? Is it only on the Sea days? Is it in the salon or on a deck? Prices? When can you sign up or do you just form a line?

I don't know if it is only sea days but it was our 1st at sea day when our daughter had her hair done. It was on the pool deck but under the overhang. I believe it was close to common grounds area. We paid $15 for 10 braids and I tipped the woman $5. The braids still look great and that was one week ago. The concierge did our reservations so if you want hair braiding add that to your reservation rush on embarkation day. Kathy

Hi- on the 7-day western 3/15 trip the navigator posted times to make reservations for the braiding-- it was not set up to take resies at teh same time as Palo or the spa. I believe that the Sunday navigator posted a night-time resie table outside of the main theatre. You will not have a problem making reservations as the braiding went on all day long...

On our first cruise, my DD had her hair braided in St. Thomas. This June, we are going to have her hair done here at home at my hair salon a few days before we go! This way, we won't have to spend vacation time waiting in a line for her hair braiding...she'll arrive at the port all ready to go, and be able to have her hair all ready from day 1 of the vacation!! Just another idea...

We made a reservation on the deck by the pool. However they were doing the braiding on deck 10 by the stairway to ESPN Sky Box. It was $33.00 plus $5.00 tip. Bit of sticker shock imho
They did across the front of her head and used the coloured beads. Took about 45 minutes. I should note they had three people in our group booked, and the reservations were a disaster. People were walking up making reservations for later that evening and the ladies were making NO note and it was obvious that reservations were not going to mean a thing. Of the three in our group only my daughter got in. The other ladies just passed as we had supper.
They did a very good job, and had read from some to avoid the ladies in Nassau but don't know if that is true or not. They also do braiding on Castaway Cay while you're there.

Hi,
I'm wondering about this braiding thing - is it mostly older girls? Is all the hair braided? Is there an advantage to having it braided on the trip or is it just "the thing to do"? My 5 year old has gorgeous curly hair and I think it would be odd to see her with a bunch of braids!

I had my hair braided in CC and it was great. However, I think I will do it sooner this year. It was really fun to be "island girl!"

Remember Bo Derek in the movie 10.....some people get their whole head done which can be very expensive and some people just get their crown area done. It is all personal preference.

Out DD's had their hair done on St. Thomas at Sapphire Beach Club. They were not that good at all.

We also had their hair done in Nassau and that was horrible. They pretty much hound you to get your hair done as you leave the ship. You must keep telling the women no thank you!!!

Last year DD (then 4) had her hair braided in St. Martin. It looked cute. This year were talking about getting her hair braided on the ship. As for the Bahamas...they do hound you to braid your hair. DW has short hair. We still laugh about the way they hounded her, saying, "Lady, your hair's not too short! You'll look lovely!!" (DW didn't get her hair braided)

We just returned from our trip on the Wonder on Sunday. My two daughters.....16 and 11.....go their hair done on Castaway Cay and we were really happy with them. The 16 yr old has short hair and so they did 10 braids to her crown and did rubber bands, and it was $20. My 11 yr old had her hair corn rowed to her crown ......and then 13 braids and it was cute! She had long hair though and it was $26. So, far they both are looking good 4 days later. I had been told before I left that doing the whole head would be $50 or so and so we just told the ladies.......we want 10 braids or we want to spend just $20. Our 16 yr old was in a lot of pain w/hers while having it done.....she has short hair though. The younger one didn't hurt at all hardly. We avoided the ladies in Nassau. We didn't think about doing it on the ship and really we never saw them doing it. But, being that we did it on CC...we were able to charge it to our room.

I used a spray Solarcaine on my daughter's head the first day to help with the pain-- it worked for her and our friend's daughter too.

The braids are cornrows if that helps. My daughter had only the crown done. Some do the whole head. Its definitely the thing from little girls to teens. Its all my daughter talks about for our next cruise. DO TELL THEM HOW MANY BRAIDS! The scam is to make them as thin as possible and charge you per braid. I would also recommend not getting beads just rubberbands. They are uncomfortable to sleep with. We are bringing "NEON" tiny rubberbands instead. Check your local dollar stores. Just remember their circumference is the size of a pecil top eraser. Enjoy!( I personally can't stand them but you are only young once)

My DD 6 had this done 2 weeks ago. We did it on CC because we couldn't get an appointment on the boat. You can somehow get appointments for CC but I didn't know it at the time. We had to wait longer. I'm not sure there was any girls left on that boat before we disembarked that didn't have some kind of braids in their hair. It was painful for all the little girls, but they wanted it bad enough to do it. I just took Aubrey's out yesterday. It took about 45 minutes to unwind/untangle all the braids and she only had half of her hair done. I would suggest putting a good conditioner on the hair when you wash it after taking them out....her hair was really frizzy and dry from the braids. All in all, she'd do it again. It was really cute on her also.

Hi, can anyone tell me if the prices for hairbraiding at the ports are less than onboard the ship or at Castaway Cay? Also, would you say that the braiding done at the ports are less sanitary, not as well done, etc. as onboard/Castaway Cay? Thanks for your answers!

The prices on CC and the ship are definitely higher than you would pay ashore. My daughter has had her hair done three times, always cornrows on the whole head --- once right off the dock at Nassau, once at Atlantis and once on the ship. The one near the dock was $15 for the whole head - we got it done late in the day when business was about over for the day, thus the fire sale price. All three were well done, little difference IMHO. There is the concern about unsanitary conditions ashore, although I've never actually heard of anyone getting head lice from them. Still, I wouldn't want my DD to be the first! We used our own comb the first time. At Atlantis they had a nice area on the beach and didn't bother you --- you had to go to them. It was shaded and they used a new comb on each person. I don't recall prices but getting it done on the ship was by far the priciest. Sticker shock is right, but we were on vacation so money seems to temporarily lose all value. We did sign up outside the Treasure Ketch, and in our case it was orderly -- a CM wrote it down on the appointed date and time on a big schedule. There were some times avaialble other than sea days, but only a couple of hours here and there. My DD looks great in beads and it makes her happy, what more could a spoiled dad ask for?

We were on the cruise last week and both DD's had their's done on the ship. we also made ressies through concierge so I can't help there. They did a really good job and the braids still look good. Both girls got what is called a head band, which is basically braids across the top of the head. I was concerned about my youngest because she does not have a tough head so I told the lady this and my DD said it did not hurt that much. The ladies were great because we had to go to wine tasting at the same time and they would not let my 13yo sign for the charges so they just held the tickets till I got done and I went by to sign them. It might be a little more expensive on the ship but we like it because you do not have to waste time while in ports.

signed up 1st night, lady said it would take 2 hours 'cause of such thick hair. Well, 92 braids and 4 hours later my dh asked dd if she wanted to get something to eat, nope I HAVE TO GO TO THE BATHROOM!!
