Hey all this may seem silly but I am wanting to get my daughters hair braided on our cruise in May but am concerned of the heigene issues with the brushes and things being used on everyone? Anyone have any input to share about this? Is it not reallly a concern? Thanks in advance Dream2011

I am the mom of two girls. Both had their hair braided on Castaway Cay. The process went very quickly and was very affordable. Actually, we did the braiding right at the end of the day, and the women working were very accomodating! We were happy with the results!

Hi - My daughter had it done when she was 4 and 6 - both on Castaway Cay....they use their hands/fingers - no combs or brushes! Beware - if your daughters have sensitive scalps - I have seen little girls cry b/c they pull it very tight...but it always looks cute on them! Good Luck

I watched some hair braiding on the ship...it appeared the hygiene was fine. I would get it on the ship or Castaway Cay vs Nassau if it were me. We got our DD a hair wrap before getting on the ship at Disney's Animal Kingdom (also at Blizzard Beach). We talked with one mom who had 1/2 her daughter's head braided and it was over $100.

If I recall correctly we brought our daughters brush with us, braids were $2 each (halfway)...they were very accomodating, our 2 year old saw her older sister having them done and wanted them too, so they managed to do 2 or 3 on her going accross her head...very cute. We did them on the ship.

I'd just bring my own brush/comb to be on the safe side (i understand they "fingercomb", but if your daughters just get out of the water or wind it might be tangled.)

It is so much less expensive on the boat than at WDW where you pay by the inch. The CMs braiding hair seemed really nice and, according to my friend's daughter, the braids (on the Wonder) weren't painfully tight. My DD11 had braids done at Port Orleans and she cried and we had to take them out.

Our daughters have had them done on our last 4 cruises. We have had them done on the ship as well as at port (St. Maartin). It is typically $2 per braid, the problem off the ship is they will put, not even kidding, 20 - 25 braids in their heads. On the ship (3 times) they never braided more than 10 to 11 braids.

The braids are tight and it really just depends on your daughters head. We usually cruise with family friends and some kids just have a softer scalp and will cry throughout the entire process and sometimes complain later that their head is throbbing. My girls have pretty tough heads and tell me that it's painful (no tears) but they want to do it again each year!!

They do share combs with each girl, I'm sure they will not be insulted if you bring your own comb.

I hope this was helpful!

thanks for all your responses. I am going to try the braiding on the ship. My daughter will be 7 at time of cruise and her hair is so long she sits on it!!!!! thanks again Dream2011

My DD's always have their hair braided on CC. We usually go early(before swimming, etc.) and with brushed hair. They do a phenomenal job. My one DD has kept hers in for 6 weeks once:scared1: IMHO I think they do a better job on CC only disadvantage is you have to wait until you get to CC as opposed to getting done 1st or 2nd day onboard:goodvibes

:goodvibesFYI if you plan on having her hair braided on the ship, they do it by appointment only, so plan to find them on the day you board to make the appointment at a convenient time for you. If I remember correctly, they were located on Deck 9 by the elevators (opposite end of the beverage stations).

:thumbsup2We sailed Wonder in Feb and I forgot until the end of the day, but found them before they were packed up and got their first appointment for the next morning at 8:30am. I did see them turning people away who walked up the following day(s).

:cutie:I gave DD(3) some children's tylenol right before she got her braids b/c I knew her head might hurt from the pulling. She never complained once, but we had really talked it up a lot ahead of time so she would know what to expect.

There are some good older threads about the braiding with pics, plus tips on how long to keep them in and best way to take them out. We used lots of detangler when we took them out and had no problems.
