Hair braiding for soccer players?

We are leaving in 2 short days to fly down to FL for a 4nt DREAM cruise :cool1: Was going to get DD's hair braided onboard in the "headband" style, so the beads would be on her head then and not on the bottom of the braids, flying around and hitting everyone in the face! Question is, could she still play soccer with them like that?

She has a game the day we come back and I didn't know if anyone on here had any experience with this or not. I've put in a request with the team mgr to check with the league, but haven't heard anything.

TIA!

Not sure about soccer, but we had some hair-braiding softball drama. Last year my oldest DD was on a 11 U travel softball team. After our trip we had a game against a team that we had beat twice. Because of a change in the schedule, we ended up playing with 8 girls. That meant that every time our 9th player came up, it was an automatic out. Well, the coach of the other team saw my DD's hair and tried to get the umpire to throw her out of the game so that they could win by forfeit. Pitiful.... The ump did not throw my DD out, but he did make her wear a baseball cap, instead of her uniform visor.

I have not seen anyone try but I sure so bet they will have something to say. If the girls cannot even wear small stud earrings or have to bubble wrap a cast- I am betting beads are out.

My DD had to remove anything hard from her head for soccer, so the beads had to come out.

The answer is no. My daughter is a soccer referee and players are not allowed to have anything hard in their hair, not even a bobby pin. She may be able to wear a headband (one of those soft grippy kind) or they make this colored non-sticky tape that a lot of the girls will make headbands out of. The headband would have to cover all the beads. Your best bet would be to call your daughter's club and ask them what the rules are for that sort of thing.

I've seen girls with the braid without beads. Maybe that would work for your daughter so she could keep them in and still play soccer?

We got my daughter's hair braided on our last cruise and she tried to wear it to her soccer game and was told we needed to removed the beads if she wanted to play. Thankfully our team gets there an hour early for warm-ups so I had time to removed the beads. You can get it done without them and that is what I would suggest unless you want to take the beads out before her game.

I remember the first time before we knew this rule, my DH and I sitting on each side of our DD taking out the beads and putting the rubber bands back in so she could keep the braid for a little longer. It was a crazy few minutes.

I agree with the consensus above. I'm on the board of our local rec soccer league here and we instruct our referees to always error on the side of safety. That means no earrings, bracelets, casts, head bands, or any similar items that could injure themselves or other players. Most of the other leagues we’ve benchmarked have similar rules. Having said all that, it always comes down to the discretion of the referee.

Silly me never thought of doing the braids without the beads! And I did check with the league and got a "it's up to the referee, but play it safe and think it's a no".

Thanks so much for all the inputs and advise - Love the DIS!

I know it is still early but this is Texas- don't forget to put sunscreen on her scalp.
