Had to laugh! Met DVC elitism face-to-face

Funny story GritsGirl, but we all know that a "True" DVC member would never shop at an outlet mall! :smooth:

Funny story, Grits.

Dues at BeachClub: ~$4. per share

Ugly uniform for second job to pay for DVC: ~$30.

Look on Mr. IMBragging's face when he finds out you're a DVC owner: Priceless!

That would have to be it. I can't imagine another motivation short of personality disorder.

dis-happy....TOOO cute!!!

Here's one of my personal stories. My DH and I have been very blessed. We are not the richest people we know (by FAR!!!), but if we want something, we can pretty much get it!! That being said, I am NOT a clothes person...I REALLY don't care, and I dress for comfort...usually really cute clothes from Walmart (that store is SOOO underrated!!!)

Anyway, we had decided to sell our house and move to a bigger one when our DD was born. I go looking at new home communities (in my usual t-shirts and cotton pants...I am in Phx, it is 110 degrees, and I am carrying a baby!). I go to this one community, and the realtor selling just looks at me and goes back to his paperwork. I just shrug and go on to look through the models. When I come back in, he is still sitting at his desk. I say, "Excuse me (he rolls his eyes)....could I get floor plans for the ___ model?" He stands up, VERY condescendingly, and says "Do you own a computer?" "Why yes," I say. "Do you have internet access?" Once again, I say "Yes". Well, then you can go to our website and look at the floor plans on line. In absolute shock, I said, "You're a new home sales office, and you do not have any pre-printed floorplans of your models?" To which he replied, "Not for people like you." OMG!!!!! I have NEVER been SOOO mad in my entire life!!!! I can only assume he meant "poor" people like me!!! I wanted SOOO badly to go back in and tell him how WRONG he was, and how we were WELL within the income range to afford his "luxury" homes...and if hadn't been so hormonal from just having DD...I might've!!!

But, you know what...you give what you get in this world...it'll ALL work out!! I think the same about the guy in the store.

Grits' and Cora's stories remind me of when I travelled with the Circus selling toys the summer before I started College. That summer I traveled around, sleeping in a truck trailer with 30 other guys (only 2 of them currently wanted by the Law, tho a couple of others were corrections system alumni), and only being ableto wash up at the water truck. So aside from tempting small children with junky toys during the show, and dodging the occasional proposition from single (or not) moms, and learning why the Tiger cages stink worse than the elephants... I also remember the possibly well-intentioned advice-giving from a number of Dads at various stops on the road. "you ought to go to college and study accounting..." or "get yourself into school. You're too smart to be working with your hands" and so on. My rejoinder was always, "well, after the summer I am starting at XXXX Univ (name of highly-respected school), and I'm earning enough doing this to pay for my food, lodging, books and part of my tuition. At this point some were apologetic (the condescenders), while others slapped me on the back in admiration (the well-meaning ones), which was kinda nice; but they were all surprised by the revelation.

Having worked with my hands as much as I did to pay for my education (I also worked in seafood processing, and a number of summers in the tourist trade and working for "summer people"), I think gave me more of an appreciation of it when I got there than many of my fellow students had. But now, sigh, I have finally removed my Circus experience from my Resume, since it is not really relevant to my career in Banking. It's always a surprise to folks who have known me a long time tho.

This reminds me of an occasion when I tried to return a defective shirt that I had bought end-of-season to an upscale department store, after the colors in it ran when I first washed it the following spring. The female manager read the washing directions aloud to me ( I was dressed in this short set that looked like I just stepped off the tennis courts and had my hair in a ponytail), as I guess she must have assumed I couldn't read.

I asked to see the store manager and this young guy came and represented himself as the manager. I said, "You're not the store manager." Well, he was acting store manager. Bottom line, I grabbed that shirt and left the store.

Later, I called back, got both their names and proceeded to write the home office a letter. While my intent was not to get them fired, both were gone shortly thereafter.

Oh and about:

I know how you feel. Some of us now shop the thrift stores. Nothing beats a decent pair of shorts for $1.50.

In bragging about his DVC assets, I'm sure he's just making up for his lack of assets in other areas.;)

Beca,

We had a similar experience when buying our new house. My DH was so mad!!! (Of course, at 38, he still gets carded at bars!)

pumpkinboy,

I wish I had such fascinating work experience on my resume!

I'm not sure which is worse, the bragger or those being excessively judgemental of others......

That sounds like something a Republican would say.

We had the same things happen to us when we went to buy a new home. The first realtor passed us to this new rookie because he thought we didn't have enough money. The new guy couldn't answer any of our questions on any of the homes we were looking at. We found a new home for sale buy owner and when the realtor called I got to tell him the news. He was speechless-Uh-uh-duh...
Never judge a book by it's cover-

I must admit I never pay full price for anything. (Except a full price water at WDW on a very hot day):smooth:

I read this whole thread with no intention of jumping on this ship.
But lightningcoach you made me laugh out loud!!!!

I can pinch and save all day long! Part-time job to fund the habit? You bethca!

But I am the happiest person in the world to pay $80.95 for fresh (and sometimes not so fresh) Orville Redenbocker popcorn in the cheesy commemorative bucket that will wind up in the toy box filled with Happy Meal toys.

And I already have the $105.75 set aside to purchase TWO corndogs at Disneyland!!!

Count me in!!!!

(and elitism of any kind is just bad form)

Interesting almost the entire group is ready to tar and feather one member because of the impression of another member. None of us were there, period. It doesn't seem fair to be so one sided without more information than one persons impression.

I agree.
My opinion may not be popular here, but even reading the original post I did not see where the guy was sooo evil. I also agree that he may have just been excited about DVC, just as many of us are.

--Just my opinion...

Nah, MG, nothing sooo evil, more like if I ran across someone like that who refers to DVC as "my asset' I would sure be laughing up my sleeve. I've referred to it as a timeshare, a vacation home, but never like that.

That term in particular to me is someone trying to put on an aire that they own property. Maybe I'm too down to earth. I think of that term as something I would more do with a chair.

Well, I must admit that would not be my first choice of words either... :teeth:

I used the toothy grin guy on my original post to try to keep things a little light.......I didn't want to tar and feather the man, just an urge for a bop on the head ;) (no permanent damage).

I thought he was an excellent reminder of a behavior I want to avoid. I too was very glad that it was ME he was mainly talking to because there are people working there trying to remain living indoors and feeding their children.

I consider myself SUPER SUPER SUPER blessed that I am working the job to feed my total addiction to the Mouse.

Another thing.....I was NOT worried about this guy being a DISer because as he went on and on about the DVC asset and how the points worked at his great property, he had obviously not read these message boards and didn't have some of his "facts" straight---------but hey, I am paid to be polite, remain professional, and sell, sell, sell, NOT educate :) Maybe he needed a captive audience and in retail, clerks are kind of stuck that way.

One last thing and I will keep my fingers still for a while......I too am very concerned about the people in Vero and the rest of Florida and I wasn't trying to make light of that. Lots of prayers have gone up for that whole situation.

Agreed. This is the very reason I take negative reviews of Disney resorts and treatment by CMs with a grain of salt. I was checking in once at a DVC resort and was a personal witness to an incidence between a guest and a CM that worked the front desk. The guest came to these forums and posted the account of what happened. Everyone here believed it word for word. However I was there and it did not happen as it was reported.

This is not to say the OP's story is not accurate, but some would take the man's attitude as a putdown, others would not. The main thing is no one can put you down, only you are capable of doing that.

I agree. When I talk about DVC to non-members, I always mention the money saving aspect and the member benefits. I feel very fortunate my family is able to vacation at WDW.
I also enjoy helping others plan for a WDW vacation and hearing them say, “It’s the best vacation we’ve taken as a family”.
