Meant to post this earlier but just wanted to say if anyone was looking for a nice weekend away then why not try York.
Last weekend (I told you this was late) - Both DDs went away at the start of the half-term on Brownie camp. Laura (9) is a Brownie and Alexandra (11) is a Junior leader.
This meant we had some time on our hands and we had already booked a Travel Inn but then saw a fantastic deal for the Marriott at York - too good to be missed!
As I've been working in Leeds for the past few months the drive up was BAU for me although it was nice to have some company for the trip.
The hotel was great as it's on the edge of the racecourse and we had a partial Grandstand view from the bedroom. We'd asked for a Kingsize bed but as they didn't have any they joined two double together - we needed 2-ways to talk each other! - LOL
As we are big hotel fans this had all we needed, nice swimming pool, sauna, jacuzzi, steam room and those HUGE breakfasts to set you up for the day!
We didn't use the car at all as the bus services were cheap, frequent and easy to use. Some of the in town car parks were time-limited to a couple of hours, so only really useful for short shopping trips.
For attraction we used the York Pass which gave you free entry to many attractions and discounts on other items like Starbucks and the Orgasmic Cafe! - true!
Highlights for me was the National Railway Museum (free entry for all but free sound guide with pass)
York Minster - very special place this - even St. Cuthbert mentioned! (Dixie Amos please note - he's been promoted! - LOL)
York Dungeon - go and meet some "resting" actors
Open Top Bus tour - Ok, it's mid february but we stoic Brits don't mind sitting up top.
There were lots of things to do and the old streets and walkways ( or should I say Snickleways ?) and the famous Whip-ma-whop-ma-gate were truely unchanged for many, many years.
All of this and Dick Turpins grave, home of Guy Fawkes and walks along the city walls etc etc made for a good trip.
Overall the people were very helpful, well kept and clean and the place was just about the right size to do in a weekend.
Oh - and a food recommendation - we had a Fantastic Thai meal at www.sangthai.co.ukSangthai - in a village called Escrick - well worth the trip out!
