So my dd told me she has a headache today, then she tells me she hit her head on the floor at gym practice last night.
so I said what did they have you doing, she said she was doing back handsprings and was being spotted.

to me if the spotter is there she should not have hit her head on the floor. I know things happen. but this bugs me,
or should I not be upset over this.

Gymnastics can be a dangerous sport. Accidents happen even with spotters. I am sure there will be plenty more.

spotters do not assure safety. They only make it "safer".

Gymnastics is a sport with inherent risks. As Jennasis said, I am sure you will experience more injuries over your daughter's career. And some of them will be just the freak accidents.

A friend of mine's daughter broke her leg doing a simple round-off. She was going into her layout and landed just the wrong way. And there was a spotter there too.

However, you should impress on your daughter that she tell you when she falls or has a bump so you can watch it.

I know but did you have to say it out loud!!!

This week alone I have had two students injure themselves. One fell off her horse and busted a lip and one fell off one of my horses yesterday and broke her shoulder (though both instances were rider error). Stuff happens.

I'm wondering if she is about where my DD is in terms of handsprings. Sometimes my DD can do it by herself and sometimes she lands on her head. Her teacher still spots her some (I'm assuming to help with form), but she doesn't help her a lot. My DD is still on a big mat so she has never complained about her head.

I wouldn't be upset about it if she is at the point where she needs less spotting. Things are going to happen. Now my 5 year old is just starting back handsprings, and he is totally spotted. If he hit his head, they wouldn't be spotting correctly.

Unless there have been a lot of other accidents, I wouldn't be the least bit upset that the spotter didn't catch it.

I'd be a little concerned with her head, though, and would call the dr if it didn't get better today.

I wouldn't be upset that the spotter didn't stop the accident as those things happen in gymnastics but, depending on your child's age, I'd a little peeved they didn't tell you so you could watch for signs of concussion.

Thanks everyone. She was fine yesterday, the headache went away and didn't return.
I did tell her to make sure she tells me when anything like that happens.
she was on the mat which was on the springy floor.
she is at the point where she does it alone sometimes, also round off back handsprings alone sometimes, but sometimes needs the spot.
when she is on the tumbletrack she does it unassisted.
I may stay and watch some of practice tonight, I usually leave for most of the time, but I may watch a bit more tonight.

I agree that you should be told if there is any possibility of a head injury.

Are you familiar with the spotters? Do they appear to be physically capable? I remember some of my D's teammates going to a summer camp. They all came back saying that the spotters we all teen girls who weren't big enough to spot them at all.

My D is now a cheerleader, is 14 and 5'7". At her gym, big guys spot the big girls.

most of the girls who are there spotting and helping with practice are college girls that used to be on the gymnastics team.
most of them seem very capable. some more than others.

I did gymnastics for awile. My freind was up on the beam and she had TWO spotters (one on each side, even though we were only required to have one) and still fell off the beam and broke her arm.

I am a coach. One of my girls broke her arm two weeks ago. She had her round-off back handspring by herself. The other coach was still spotting every other one just to make sure she was using good form. The little girl's brain just turned off. There was nothing anyone could do about it. The other coach is young and was devastated. All the other coaches had to go tell her our stories of the first broken bone we had. Yes. we all remember every detail of every broken bone we have had as a coach.

I agree with the pp. If she is brand new to back handsprings and she gets hurt than it is a coaching error. It sounds like she is at a point where this sometimes happens.

If she was being spotted, I would be a little upset, but I am sure it's hard to spot people

It sounds like she is bending her arms, which will make her hands right by her head & very close to the floor. We have a cheerleader on the team that does this evry single time she does a back handspring. I have NO idea what they are thinking letting her continue doing this. Just this past month at cheer camp during the extream routine she did it and hit hard. She was rushed to the hospital with a bruised neck. (I have never heard of that) She is fine now, but that was scary. This girl had been doing BHS for years now, & still makes this mistake.

I am glad your DD is doing better today.
