Gun control

With recent sniper events, I do not understand why NRA and others opposed to gun control. Gun control doesn't mean taking their guns away (right?). That only means you need to register for what you own, and that you should not have more than 'enough'.

Why does NRA have so much power? Why do people opposed to it, and say it's their ammendment rights? What does that have to do with anything? If all guns are registered, we'll already know who owned this gun, and track him down.

So frustrating. Or am I missing something here?

Probably not, I'm sure he'd just get a gun from sources that aren't registered. If this is a domestic terrorist it is likely a registered gun, the registration that is in the news right now is the fingerprint of barrel. I don't see how it would help in this situation. I think the person is smart enough to get around it.

Hey, I was just talking about this on the debate board! We were talking about gun fingerprinting and some other things. I want 'smart guns', guns that can be only operated by their owners. (see debate board).

I do agree that things need to be changed. Atleast my state does background checks with licenses. It'll be interesting to see the responses!:D

Well. I'm sure people can get around the system. Registering may not stop VA shooting, but it will probably help identifying other killings. We register for our cars, why shouldn't we register for guns?

NRA members always say "guns don't kill people", "people kill people." Try telling that to the victims families in the DC and Virginia area.

Thousands of more DEATHS occur in the U.S. each year from alcohol-involved auto accidents than guns. Hey, cars KILL when drunk drivers operate them.........PERHAPS WE SHOULD GO AHEAD AND BAN ALL CARS!!!!!!!!!

Eros, I was waiting for you!! (just kidding). ;)

Cars are designed for transportation, and guns are designed to kill. I'm not saying that we should ban all guns, but even some pro-gun instructors that I know, think that the system we have now is flawed.

So you are anti-gun control, but anti-death penalty? I don't get it?
It's okay to kill with a gun, but not a lethal injection?
;)

I have most likely heard all of the arguments before so, don't feel obligated to answer my questions, you don't have to justify your statements, I've always got the debate board!:D

Cars CAN provide transportation; they also can become MURDER weapons.

Guns serve important functions for hunters, Police, and law-abiding citizens. They ALSO can become MURDER WEAPONS.

Knives can be used to slice bread. They ALSO can become MURDER WEAPONS.

The problems in a society with a high homicide rate is NOT the availability of guns.

That is true. We have a high profile murder case awaiting trial here in Houston where a woman caught her husband cheating and ran him over (more than once) in a hotel parking lot.

Thats a pretty good answer. What is to blame for the high homicide rate in our society? I wonder if countries like England that don't have as many guns, have as high a homicide rate as we do?

Guns make it easier for people to kill people. I wonder what the statistics say about what weapon was the weapon of choice for most murderers in jail?

It sure does make it easier for them though.Do citizens really need AK47's and other automatic weapons

Does anyone need a high performance sports car to get to and from work, school, the mall, etc?

A sports car doesn't kill somebody from 200 yards away.

You are missing something.

What do you think that one of the 1st things that an invading country or our Govt gone bad would do to registered gun owners?

Take their guns away and leave them utterly defenseless. It has happened already in other countries in the past. Do a little search of the history books.

I don't expect either of those things to happen, but it could.

The essence of the 2nd Amendment is to allow the people to defend themselves.

I'm not in the NRA, but I do own several firearms. And that saying? "I'll give up my guns when you pry my cold dead fingers from it" is something I believe in.

I'm in favor of some gun control but not through a national registration system.

I'm in favor of background checks and waiting periods (long ones).
I don't care what kind of firearms people own. There is no good reason why someone who needs to purchase a firearm, can't wait a week (or more) for it.

"guns don't kill people", "people kill people."

If there wasn't a PERSON pulling the trigger of the gun, then there would be no deaths.

PEOPLE KILL PEOPLE, with guns!

I would agree you are missing something, alot!!!!!
First of a lack of history!!!! The first thing a despotic regime does is take away guns fro the public so they can keep them under control, its been done all the time in history and as recent exmaples you have all the dictatorships from hitler on down!!! A unarmed citizenry can not defend itself from a oppresive government!!!! And our founding fathers who knew history knew this and thats why it is the second amendment in the US constitution!!!! A gun registration system is the first step for disarming people and taking away all of our constitutional rights!!! Once you get a liberal/facist minded person as president ala hillary as a example they will easily use the sniper pretext as a excuse to disarm the citizens for our suppossed own good!! And once rights are gone they dont return. Waiting times are just part of the incrementalism that will take away the rights of every citizen to own guns!! We didnt get the current welfare state in one fall swopp, but it is was impllement one piece at a time and waiting periods are the same thing, nickel and dime the second amendment to death.
And a gun doesnt kill anybody, a person using it unlawfully does!!! Put a gun on a shelf and the gun isnt going to get up and walk itself down the street and shoot anybody, it takes a person with a criminal/mental mindset to do that.
People have to have the right to defend themselves because the reality is that the police force in most cases are a a reactive force where we are sent in after the fact and pick up the pieces but when push comes to shove it will be the victim or his firends/citizens who have to defend themselves till the police arrive. The police may deter crime when we are on the spot but once removed it is the victim who may have to defend themselves.
Alot of people like to shoot guns as sport and alot of outdoorsemen use them to hunt any number of different animals.
PS-none of this is meant as a attack, just answering the question from the poster!!

Wow, the world must be ending. I agree with EROS for only the second time ever!!!!!! WOW, I'm speechless. I ditto what Bob O said, I couldn't have written it better myself.

Oh and I have a prediction...this thread will be closed or moved to the debate bored. :)

Unclekyle, it always nice to agree with people who you often dont agree with!! And i would also agree that it is likely to be moved(escpecially if some complains).
