We want to have a water day (beach, pool, something) during our trip this October and are having a hard time deciding. Any thoughts or experiences would be appreciated.
Should we go to...
  • Clearwater
  • Cocoa Beach
  • Disney Water Park

I vote water park because its closest and most activities.....but I grew up on an island.....so the beach was basically always there.....I prefer the Atlantic side to the Gulf, but that is personal preference....

and I hate driving more than I have to anytime, much more on vacation.....I wouldn't ever want to drive that far on vacation once I was settled...

I used to go to Cocoa all the time when I was at school at UCF though.....its a nice beach....

Clearwater Beach is definitely prettier than Cocoa Beach if you decide you want to drive. It is about 2 hours to Clearwater Beach and 1.5 to Cocoa Beach from Disney.

It really depends on what you want out of it though- if you want to be able to play in the water lots and have a variety of activities go with a water park. On the other hand if you want to lay out then go with a beach.

Clearwater is the prettier beach but I vote water parks, too, for all the reasons stated above. However; in the future, I would suggest visiting Cocoa beach along with the Space Center and possibly the Brevard Count Zoo (which is exceptional) if you want to do more than just a water day.

if you take 528 out to Cocoa, its about an hour.......but I think all of the Atlantic is prettier than the Gulf cuz...well, the Gulf is boring to me :)

I lived in Clearwater for a time and would spend hours on the beaches there. The water tends to be warmer on the Gulf side and the sand is also different from the Atlantic. If you want more of a crowded beach experience with restauraunts within walking distance and several hotels, go to Clearwater Beach. You will have lots of parking, but it is metered ( I think it still is anyway) There are lifeguards and I think still volleyball courts.

If quiet and pristine is more your thing, check out Caladesi Island which is in nearby Dunedin. You have to take a ferry boat over there and it is a state park so there is a charge to enter the park (small and paid by car not people) and there is a fee to go over on the ferry but it is well worth it in my opinion.

There is a really great beach I go to near Cocoa that is called Cherie Down park. It is also a county park but the parking is free and you simply walk over a bridge onto the sand. It is at Cape Canaveral (right down the road from the Port where you will pass the cruise lines. There are lifeguards there as well.
.
Jetty Park is right down the road, but there is a fee to get in. But many people like going there. Lori B Wilson park is also a nice beach area, but it is farther down the road than the first two I mentioned.

As for water parks, we have been to both parks this summer more frequently than the beaches. We like the wave pool and the slides and lazy river.

I hope the information is helpful.
My personal choice would be to do the water parks in October. One of the two will be open while the other undergoes upkeep.
Even Clearwater beach water is not going to be as warm as they keep the water at the water parks.

Have fun with whatever you decide. :)

I haven't been to many beaches or water parks since we moved, but I did not feel the need to get into the 90 degree St Pete Beach our friends were at. (Interestingly, a wild manatee swam by them earlier in the day!) The water wasn't clear or refreshing or had any waves.

My trip to Daytona and another to Caveral and Cocoa Beach were sooooooo fun!!! Ive been to Cherie Down, stumbled on it by accident! Was a perfect day!!! Bounding in endless waves, a bit crisp and refreshing. I loved it! And I would go back to Daytona in a minute, and this was on a Saturday afternoon in mid July! I strapped on my goggles and freestyle swam for ages, what a great refreshing workout.

Im used to living in Gulf Shores, so I like that better than the Tampa Gulf areas so far that I have been to. I guess for FL, I'm just an Atlantic kind of gal! And it's sooooo fun to watch the Cruise Ships leave. And the seafood is super good!

But I haven't yet been at a Disney water park! I need to go! Hopefully soon!

Keep in mind, if you are coming in Oct, that is basically PEAK hurricane season. If there is a big system even a ways out there, it could be a really active (dangerous?) surf. So let all these factors drive your decisions.

Florida has SO much to offer!

I will always choose ocean over gulf...the Gulf is not the beach, to me. But if I were staying at Disney, I'm not sure I would bother leaving property for a single water day, so I would probably do one of the water parks!

I was trying to remember the name of the park I always went to....I think I went to Lori Wilson all the time......always enough space and parking....

Yes, Lori B Wilson is a popular spot. We enjoyed that one too. We took the dog with us that time and they have a nice dog park (NOT on the beach mind you I stayed with the dog at the dog park while hubby and kids played in the water) :)

I too would choose ocean over the Gulf since the ocean has the big rolling waves and the sounds and smells are much better. However, I would choose Daytona Beach over any other beach.

Thanks for your input. I think we are going to choose the waterparks during our trip and then head to the ocean for our last day. Sounds like it will be the best of both worlds.

Hmm..a relaxing beach day might be a good break from the high energy of Disney. We love Cocoa, but I agree that the Atlantic side is way prettier.
