You're right of course, what I find a bit hypocritical is that many of the same people were screaming when a college decided to no longer have a 9/11 memorial.

So why is that such an outrage, yet Disney is "free" to do what it wants. IMO basically it's because on here Disney can do no wrong, ever so we as usual we make excuses why their behavior is ok. yet the college students of course are 'pandering" to political correctness.

Wait, are you talking about that student council vote? Because I far as I understand, that vote was to have a yearly commemoration, and was voted down. They didn't cancel something that already existed. And the big problem was the logistics of the event, which were not clear in the resolution...

Many "public universities" are quasi-public. Their legal status is generally between that of a public and private entity. Quite a few could theoretically divest themselves of that status and become fully private.

First of all, I am not a Disney lover. In fact, my family refuses to go to Disney as they much prefer Universal. I think they do a lot wrong. Disney that is, not my family. I still support Disney's right to do what they want on the grounds of their business. And I don't see it as disrespectful in anyway, shape, or form.

Second of all, are you talking about the recent thread about a student group? The one where it was established that the title of the article was nothing but sensationalism?

The group shot down the proposal, not because they didn't want a memorial, but that the proposal itself was flawed. The majority even stated that they would vote on it again if it were revised. You might want to go read the thread if you haven't read it recently.

Yep, American here. Good detective work. Not bashing, just expressing frustration. Recent events just have me disgusted and a bit embarrassed for our country. The refusal by the majority of state governors to accept refugees, the hatred displayed by so many, etc. As I said, don't mind me. And we actually agree that Disney can handle this however they see fit by the way.

I'm just curious as to what authority that governors (or even states) would have to deny or accept refugees. As far as I recall from my civics lessons, foreign policy is the sole responsibility of the federal government. Once someone is accepted as a refugee in the United State, I was under the impression that they had freedom of movement. If where they wish to settle is with family already in the United States, then no governor has the authority to prevent that.

Just FYI, I am an alumni of the U of Minnesota (where the student council took a vote not to have an annual memorial). I got an email from the University today and they ARE going to establish an annual memorial. The vote was taken with the explicit instruction to bring it back with some changes. Whether the student council votes to accept or not is now irrelevant because the U is doing it on its own. Score another for misinformation on the internet.

I was wondering the same thing. My state is one of only a small handful whose governor has said it will accept refugees from Syria though. Anyway, not to derail the important discussion at hand regarding where people can place flowers.

I did see something that stated that state or local governments could make things difficult, even though they're supposed to merely be intermediaries. Refugees are entitled to short-term financial and medical assistance from the federal government. However, that money is passed on to the states for distribution and the states are required to process the applications. Refugee children are also allowed to attend public schools. I could see a state or local government denying these things even if they're not supposed to.
