I have a decision to make quick. Do I confirm a 5520 semi-obstructed view room at category 10 price or spend the extra $200 for a guarenteed Cat 9 room and hope for an upgrade to a balcony room? We are looking at a 7-night Eastern cruise on May 29th 2004. Thanks!

Never book a room with the hope of an upgrade. You will probably not get one. Book the room that you will be happy.

That depends on how much you're hanging your hopes on getting the upgrade. Upgrades are few and far between, and if you're counting on it, you're setting yourself up for disappointment.

Booking a category guarantee does not necessarily give you a better chance of being upgraded. What you'll most likely end up doing is paying $200 extra for a category 9 room when what you have booked, the secret porthole room, is essentially a category 8.

I think it's fair to say that you're just as likely to be upgraded from the secret porthole room than when booking a cat. 9 guarantee. Which is to say in either case, not very likely.

I say go for 5520. You can see a view of the window at www.castawayclub.com secret porthole rooms. It will have a view just as good as a cat. 9 for a cat. 10 price.

I would also say to go for the secret porthole room. That way, you have a sure thing, and I really don't think the Cat. 9 guarantee would give you any better chance of being upgraded. And if you don't get an upgrade, you could wind up below something noisy. With an SPR, you know exactly what you are getting.

Oh well, it's a non-issue now. The agent thought they were available and Disney just corrected themselves, the obstructed rooms are not available. Thanks for the free advice anyway! My these rooms book quickly!

Go ahead and book the category 9 and put yourself on the waitlist for one of the category 10's on deck 5. Make sure you specify that deck, or they might move you into a category 10 on another deck, which are truly inside rooms. You can also call from time to time to see if one has opened up. Worst case, you're still on the ship with an ocean view.

We thought we had lost our chance to confirm SPR 5520, and our TA at DU was able to get it for us! Do get on waitlist for the SPR's... Could luck out!
