i have never booked a room on gtd status. How possible is it that I book a gtd inside room and get a room with a window or verandah? I know there’s no guarantee so I should make sure I’m happy with what I’ve booked, but I was curious if this ever happened to anyone before.

It could happen. I booked a guaranteed Ocean View and ended up with a Navigator's Verandah (which we LOVED).

But don't expect it... Usually, with GTD, you get what you paid for.

Typically when you book a category you will get a cabin in that category or better but still of the same type. So, if you book an Oceanview GTY then you will get that category or better but still an Oceanview. Because there are more veranda categories than OV or Inside cabins, the chances of being "upgraded" within a veranda category are greater. Say you book a 7A, but end up with a 4A that is considered an upgrade. I have booked Veranda GT a few times and always ended up getting a better room than the category I booked. I have not booked OV or Inside though so not sure how that would work out in terms of jumping a category.

Do you think they look at your Castaway status before assigning you?

I think they do look at the type of room you usually book more so than your CC status. If you usually book a 5A but the GTY is a 7A, then they might put you in a 5A when you get your assignment. I am doubtful about CC status though.

Why would they look at what you usually book? In that case, everyone should do a GTY for an oceanview and expect a verandah??? Or do you mean they sort of reward you for paying for verandahs for your previous cruises? I am anxiously (or curiously) awaiting my cabin assignment. I am about 4 weeks out . . . still nothing. I am Gold but doubt that will mean anything to Captain Mickey!

I just booked a gty for a cruise next month. I booked ocean view 8A. There are tons of verandas, over 100 still showing with 4 weeks away. I took a chance on GTY OV, secretly hoping for an upgrade given it’s just weeks away. But no, I got my assignment and got an ocean view 8A, exactly what I booked. As for level, I’m platinum. I’m happy with my room, but a veranda upgrade would’ve been nice. Oh well! It may happen, but not too often.

Well, I would have upgraded you, for sure! 100 verandahs left? Maybe you can work out a deal upon boarding??? Do they ever offer last minute bargains? I also wondered if there is availability that is NOT showing. Some cabins held back. What ship are you sailing on?

I mean that when I book a 7A GTY (which I have done a few times out of the 19 cruises I have taken) I ended up with a 5A which is typically what I book and choose.
I have not ever booked an Oceanview or Inside though but I have not heard of whole category upgrades happening like from Oceanview to veranda regardless of CC status.

Lol, well thank you.....this is the sept 10th 4 night on the dream.

I'm only Gold, n2mm . . . but I'll certainly text Mickey and see what he can do! I booked a GTY OGT . . . so not sure what I'll end up with. Could be a lounge chair on deck 4?

Sytrace - oh, I get it . . . you mean an upgrade in your own category. The categories don't make a lot of sense to me. In my category (ocean view) it's 9 - ABCD. But with verandahs there are a lot of different numbers AND letters.

Our group was just assigned their OGT oceanview cabins.....they got 4 in a row on Deck 5. They are very happy with it. I would not expect an upgrade to a whole different category (like inside to O/V or O/V to verandah). It may happen but not very often. All upgrades are random and usually are based on DCL inventory needs at the time. That has been my experience in 20 years of cruising with DCL and being on this board for about 18 years. Does pixie dust happen sometimes....sure but not that often!

I was actually just thinking about 8A GTY. There are so few 8A and, on the Dream class, they are very popular. I was kind of surprised they offer 8A for a guarantee. But I guess they do come available.

If there are still rooms available at boarding, it is likely that they will be made available for port upgrades, since Disney Cruise will take any additional money they can get.

For those hoping for an upgraded category for a GTY booking, having a lot of available rooms in the next category up may actually reduced the chance of getting a room assignment in a higher category than booked. Anyone upgrading to the higher category in advance will open up rooms at the lower category. It is also possible that DVC will give pixie-dust upgrades that move people who booked earlier into upper categories to make room for GTY people to get what they booked. It is also possible that DCL will upgrade the GTY people. There does not seem to be much consistency or predictability to who gets upgraded.

Do you normally book a verandah when you aren’t booking GTY?

Oh my yes...veranda categories go from 7, 6,5 and 4 with letters from A to E. Lots more room for "upgrades" from category to category because of this.
Inside is Category 10 and 11 and OV is 8 and 9 with various letters with them.

I booked a VGT room (verandah guarantee) 3 weeks out from our cruise, and while I can't be for certain, I'm pretty sure it said the category would be a 5D room. I normally don't pay attention to the letter codes, but I wanted to be sure I wouldn't end up in a Navigator's verandah, and I remember researching and seeing that I wouldn't since it was a 5 something. I was assigned 10 days out to a 4A room.
