I would find Storm to be a bit weird in my classroom unless he was an African queen that could control the weather. I'm not making fun but does your son wan to be an Indy wrestler or something? Storm is NOT a very professional name.

OMG how did you know what our aspirations are for him?!?! It would be so awesome if he wrestles profesionally someday. That will be too cool!

ROTFL!!! You're awesome! The name Storm is awesome AND does not limit his ability to be ANYTHING he wants to be in life! (but you already knew that)

Aw, thanks. Storm says that the best part of his name is that no one ever forgets it.

There are FAR stranger names in his class than Storm, though. We live in a multicultural area and it is pretty much anything goes.

I just think that parents need to get back to normal names. Storm ESQ? Dr. Storm? Come on. I feel like naming a child is a big deal. Have we as a society lost that? I really hope not. Whats wrong with John, Franklin, Alex? There is a difference between different and just over the top. I would do what the teacher says other wise Storm is going to have a rough weathered four years. I'm not trying to be mean but teachers SOSOSOO label students like this. The fact that he's in the ninth grade and mommy is fighting this battle for him...they are going to label him. FYI be prepared. GL

Then you should name your children normal names. Why on earth should everyone else follow suit?

I really doubt he's going to have a rough time. Most people will abide by a person's wishes in what they want to be called.

Thanks for the advice, but I'm not worried. I don't think people have to have old fashioned or traditional names to accomplish what they want to in life. If that's the case the million Haleys, Brittanys, and Madisons in the world are in huge trouble.

And, BTW, we do have a last name that the ESQ or MD will come after should he pursue those fields.

Parents read book on raising children, look for the best schools, buy the safest cars. Everything to ensure their child is set in life and then they give them crazy names that no one would take seriously. At my school he would get teased by students and staff.

Wow, the staff at your school makes fun of children. Niiiiiice.

He's never had a problem with his name at school. 9 times out of 10 the first thing he hears from other kids is, "awesome name."

FTR, my father is 75 years old this year and his name is Irp. Yep, it's Irp. and my grandfather's name was Irp and my brother's middle name is Irp. Oh, and my father has friends his age named,not nicknamed, but legally named; Lemoine, Champus, Fizz and Puzz (those two might be nicknames not sure), and Tusdee and Trudee. And heck, I'm in my forties and have friends named Harland, Udelle, Krist, Kata, Pepper...I mean what's normal for god's sake?
So you see, "getting back to" normal names doesn't make sense to me. There's been unusual names forever and there always will be. Jesus comes to mind.....and so does Elvis.

If you researched the background of names you would know that the upper class of society usually has a set of names in rotation long before the lower class every gets it. 15 years ago Madison and Montana where names of children from the upper crust of society, the middle class soon took it and then the lower class. Once the lower class gets a name you can typical call it passe. A name is important, if not why was he not originally named Storm. I'm not trying to be mean but i feel that by allowing him to change his name you are letting the child be the parent. He should be ok with it as a nickname but realize that as a young adult it is not proper in this teachers classroom. he needs to respect the authority the teacher has and might use. This teacher could take points off test or quiz for incorrectly writing his name. I have taken 5pts off a test because students did not write their full name.

Not to be mean but EVERY school is like that. Teachers talk about EVERYTHING. Like how students are dressed, parents who helicopter or bulldozer. Students that are hooking up and why? It's just reality especially in High School. Though kids might think his name is "cool" teachers might not be thinking the same thing. Definitely not the teacher he has right not. Hope it works out though.

15 years ago (or however long it has been) Madison took off because of the movie Splash. Montana? Here that would be a redneck name, definitely not a wealthy one.

By allowing my son to change his name I'm allowing him to be an individual. He has to live with the name, not me. He identifies himself by it, not me.

I don't care what a teacher thinks of the name that I gave him. The teacher will allow him to use it, period. I guarantee you that in my county (Montgomery County, Maryland, BTW, an excellent school district) no principal would support a teacher who takes points off because a child uses the name he prefers, one that is legal in every sense of the word.

No, they're not all like that. I've seen what goes on in the teacher's lounge of that type of school and it's pure poison -- both for the faculty AND students.

The principal WILL NOT go against the teacher the union would be ALL OVER THAT. You won't win good luck trying though.

A) Mommy will fix all your problems.
B) There is no reason to respect a teachers rule
C) You are letting every teacher in that school know who is really in control in your house.
Trust me this teacher is talking and he will talk about this. And by the end of the week you and your son are going to be labeled HELICOPTER.

It's not a nickname. It's his middle name, just like Krista is my middle name.

The only difference is that I wouldn't make a big stink about it if someone called me by my first name. I didn't when I was a teenager, either.

OP - It sounds like Storm is growing up and would prefer to handle this on is own (except for maybe the details of a legal name change). He was embarrassed that you called the teacher. Did you tell him that you posted this on the DIS?

Ahh, that's crazy. I've gone by Ruthie since I was born, but my given name is Carrie Ruth. Most of my teachers were okay with it, and the couple that were not got used to it when I would write Ruthie on all my papers.

Whatever! I have no doubt that I would be supported. Not the slightest. Students here are graded on their work, not by the name that the teacher decides she wants on the paper. Talk about power tripping nonsense.

My son will learn that:

A) He has a say in his life.
B) His parents will back him up on matters that are important to him

and the school will learn that:

C) A parent decides what her child is named and how he will be addressed.

As I suspected, this teacher isn't going to budge. Mom confirms it. I've dealt with this type before--Mom, save time and hassle and just go to the principal.

Mom didn't confirm anything, she hasn't been in contact with the teacher. Going to the principal without speaking with the teacher has much more potential for causing grief for the student.

Even if he is "that type", he deserves a courtesy call.

Yes granted it's his MIDDLE name not his first. I guess my problem is that the parent is allowing the child to make a big deal about it. Can he really not suck it up? Is it really worth the hassle of teacher stigma. My name is Nichole but I go by Nikki but if a teacher called me Nichole it was fine. I had a kid this year named Kahlid but I called him The Great Kaliee after a Wrestler we both enjoyed. Preferred names are fine just not in the OP's DS teachers classroom and I think the student AND the parent should respect that.
